Chapter 140 I Have a Gift for You

"Moreover, even if it were the same as Cody says that I borrowed from federal credit cards or got installment loans or even high-interest loans, it's not feasible. Uncle Marshall, you should know that borrowing such a significant sum isn't easy. Your small factory couldn't possibly borrow so much money at once, right? Let alone me."

"Kevin, you still put on an act? How long will you admit it and end your mistake? Then tell us. Where did your money come from?" Cody, still suspicious, continued to press Kevin aggressively.

"I've made myself quite clear. The royalties I earn from writing books—you all have a rather limited understanding of ebooks. Websites where one can write books for money aren't limited to just the well-known Kindle Direct Publishing. There are numerous websites online now where one can earn millions monthly. Do you really believe that earning 800,000 dollars will guarantee fame? You underestimate the power of ebooks. Look at those accomplished authors—how many of them don't make millions of dollars annually?"
"And if you really don't believe me, you can always check. Scarlett can look into my credit card accounts, check my federal credit card, check installment loans, and see if I've borrowed any money."

"This matter, in any case, couldn't have been kept from everyone forever, so there's no need for me to lie. Cody, today is your aunt's birthday, a happy day for us all, so I won't pursue your baseless slander. Sit down, eat, and talk less."

"Even if I had borrowed, it's not from your family, isn’t it?"

"I'm just worried that my auntie and Scarlett would be in trouble. If you end up owing a mountain of debt and disappearing, it's Scarlett and my auntie who'll suffer." Cody persisted stubbornly.

"No, Cody, Kevin is a decent guy; he wouldn't do such a thing. There must be some misunderstanding." Clara stood up, somewhat awkwardly pulling at Cody, trying to calm him. "Today is Lillian's birthday, a joyous occasion. Let's not talk about this now."

"Scarlett, check now. Look into his accounts. Then call the bank and see if he's borrowed any money." Marshall glared sternly at Kevin, advancing towards him and demanding, "Kevin, hand over your phone."

"Stop!" Lillian suddenly slammed the table, rising angrily and saying to Marshall, "Kevin is my son-in-law, and whatever he buys for me is our family's affair. The Gomez family shouldn’t meddle in. I believe in my son-in-law, and we'll end this topic here. Don't speak of it again."

Seeing Lillian enraged, Victoria immediately smiled and said to her, "Sis, we're just looking out for you and Kevin. If you're not keen on it, then so be it. We'll back off. And if things go south, well, it won't be us facing the consequences anyway."
Victoria, saying so, signaled to Marshall and Cody.

Marshall snorted coldly and returned to his seat.

Cody, however, still glared at Kevin with a disgruntled expression, planning in his mind how he could incontrovertibly expose Kevin's deceit and thoroughly trample on the impostor.

Kevin was, of course, aware of the Gomez family's thoughts. They simply couldn't stand to see him or the Foster family doing better than them. Kevin had seen plenty of relatives like this before. His own relatives were just the same. They couldn't stand to see others do well, always hoping for their misfortune so they could feel a sense of superiority by comparison.

If one became successful or wealthy, they'd be like crabs in a bucket, doing everything they could to drag you down, trying to exploit you, to bring you back to their level.

"Mom, actually, this watch is a gift I got for Scarlett to give to you. As for my own gift, I haven't presented it to you yet." Kevin looked indifferently at the few clowns from the Gomez family and then turned to smile at Lillian.

"Kevin, I don't need any gifts; I've been very happy today already." Lillian quickly shook her head, patting Kevin's hand with a smile. "Your thoughtfulness alone is enough for me."

"Come, Mom. Follow me." Under everyone's puzzled gazes, Kevin took Lillian by the hand and stood up, gesturing to the waitress who had been waiting there patiently.

The waitress immediately turned and ran out.

Then, suddenly, the lights in the great hall dimmed.

Subsequently, spotlights came on, all pointing towards the closed curtains.

"Kevin, what is this?" Lillian immediately froze in place, curiously watching the spotlight's focus as the curtain began to open slowly.

"Kevin, what are you up to? Why do you make such a grand scene?" Scarlett also came up in surprise, frowning with curiosity.

"You'll know in a moment; this is the birthday gift I have for Mom," Kevin said with a gentle smile. He embraced Scarlett in his arms, held Lillian with his left hand, and wrapped his right arm around Scarlett, feeling immense happiness.

"What's all this secrecy about?" Cody grumbled, standing up, also curious about things behind the slowly opening curtain.

Under such a mysterious and grand atmosphere, everyone stood up, turning to look towards the curtain.
