Chapter 56 An Unfathomable Young Heart
"I'm sorry, Sofia. I was too impulsive," Kevin said with a sorrowful depth in his gaze towards Sofia, and with a gesture towards Natalie's room, he suggested, "Sofia, go and check on Natalie. She is probably still upset about yesterday. Comfort her a bit and persuade her to eat something. Starving can harm one's health."
Kevin was particularly keen to see Natalie's current state and to gauge the level of intimacy between them.
If Natalie remembered last night's events and was planning to expose his vile behavior, it could mean his private death. If Natalie appeared normal and didn't remember the evening before, he could not be worried.
"Natalie, Get up quickly. How is it that you have yet to rise from slumber at this juncture? Open the door."
Sofia was much more direct than Kevin, pounding on Natalie's door with an impatiently urging, "You foolish girl, either venture forth and court mischief or seclude oneself within chambers all day, indulging in gaming pursuits. What's going on in your head? You've stopped eating now, too? Come out."
"Alright, I hear you! I'm up now." An irritable voice came from the room.
Then, as Natalie suddenly opened the door and stepped out with a gloomy face, she cast a cold glance at Kevin before saying to Sofia, "I'm hungry. Let’s go eat."
[Current state: repressed, sad, humiliated, in pain, conflicted, perplexed, contradictory, adrift]
[Intimacy level: -0 (disgust)]
Keven thought, ‘Damn it.’ Kevin felt his head in a whirl, and cold sweat immediately started to stream from his forehead. When he saw Natalie’s state and the intimacy level with himself plummet to disgust at 0, he understood that everything last night had been conscious for Natalie. Even if she didn't know the full extent of what had happened, she certainly had some vague memories of what he did. Kevin once again braced himself for the chance of reloading.
Even so, he had already despairingly closed his eyes.
However, the scenario Kevin had envisioned—of Natalie exposing him in front of Sofia and then furiously berating him—did not occur. None of the possibilities Kevin feared came to be.
"Kevin," Natalie called out to Kevin dispassionately. She then walked past him as if she hadn’t even seen him, heading downstairs.
Not only did Natalie not expose what Kevin had done to her, but she also seemed to act as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
Seeing Natalie walk downstairs, Kevin was utterly dumbfounded.
"Kevin? What are you spacing out for? Let's go eat together." Sofia looked strangely at Kevin, who was standing still, bemused, and took his hand to lead him downstairs.
From Natalie's reaction, she unquestionably had some awareness last night! Moreover, she certainly remembered parts of what happened. However, Natalie had shown no intent to speak of it, even acting deliberately normal.
Even in front of Kevin, she behaved as though she knew nothing. Why was Natalie doing this?
Kevin had prepared himself for reloading.
But unexpectedly, nothing had occurred, leaving Kevin feeling like he had punched into cotton—somewhat at a loss and unsure of how to proceed.
"Kevin, this is the lunch I specially made for you and Natalie today. Come and taste how my cooking is?" Just after descending the stairs, Sofia offered Kevin a set of tableware with expectant gleaming eyes.
Kevin glanced at the ominous cooking on the table, and his complexion immediately darkened. Sofia certainly seemed to have put effort into it, preparing a whole table of dishes. But each looked like a blackened mass. Could such things be edible?
Kevin struggled as he swallowed a bit of saliva, grasped a charred piece of barbecue, and took a bite. The acrid, burnt flavor immediately stimulated Kevin's taste buds, followed by a tangy, vinegar-infused saltiness. It was as if he was eating charred salt. It was an unpleasant experience.
Natalie, sitting opposite, spat out the food she had tried to taste in pain. "Sofia, what is this? Can this even be eaten? It's so bad."
"You are ungrateful. I got up early to grill meat for you! If you don’t want to eat it, you will be hungry. Kevin will surely like it, right?"
"Kevin, what do you think? Is it good?" Sofia turned to Kevin with hopeful eyes, craving encouragement.
Kevin had also intended to endure it to give Sofia some confidence. But the grilled meat was hellishly unpalatable, and he couldn't hold back, following suit and spitting it out.
