Chapter 88 Aaron's Arrogance

Supporting Hazel, Scarlett gently touched her belly and smilingly remarked, "Hazel, has the baby been kicking your tummy? It seems to have grown so much in just two months. If I remember correctly, isn't it the fourth month now? I'm so envious of you. You'll be a mother soon."
"Your car really ought to be swapped out by your husband; not only is it lacking in space, but it also lacks power and isn't attractive! It simply does not match up with someone as stunning as you." Aaron glanced at Kevin, who had just closed the car door and was waiting on the side. His sarcastic tone was deliberately pointed at Kevin.
His words were not just about the car; Aaron was implicitly targeting Kevin, insinuating that Kevin was unworthy of Scarlett.
"The car is simply a means of transport. As long as it runs and shelters me from the weather, it's good. Besides, I'm used to my car; it's quite comfortable for me." Scarlett nonchalantly brushed aside Aaron's comment.
Kevin looked at Hazel's proud expression and Aaron's smug face, then at Scarlett, and felt deeply moved. Perhaps Scarlett's unpretentious nature was what he found most attractive about her.
She was devoid of vanity and ostentation, approaching life with a serene and unburdened demeanor, maintaining a simple and modest outlook, exuding a graceful nonchalance and an ethereal elegance.
In this restless and vain world, Scarlett was like a pure and otherworldly goddess.
"Yes, a car, like shoes or clothes, isn't necessarily better just because it's more expensive. As long as it's comfortable and suitable for me, it's enough. Of course, if one has the money for a luxury car, that would be nice, too. Scarlett, if you like, I could also get you one," Kevin smiled as he walked around the car to speak with Hazel and Aaron.
"Kevin, please spare us the pretense; do you think we are unaware of the situation? Do you know the price of this car? The base price alone is over $350,000! Do you believe this to be your typical Toyota? Do you think you can just buy it at will? This car is not something the average working class can afford," Aaron took the opportunity to give Kevin a lesson immediately.
In both his words and undertones, Aaron was highlighting his own superiority and disdain towards Kevin. Displaying superiority in front of his wife and her attractive best friend made Aaron feel exceptionally comfortable.
"No! The car's too big for me. I'm not used to it. When I have to park it, I'd probably have trouble finding a spot."
Scarlett glanced at the car and seriously objected. "I'd rather stick with my car. It's quite good."
"Scarlett, you really should stop being so consistently honest and kind and stop always thinking of others. Men, well, sometimes they need a bit of pressure; that's how they find motivation! Kevin has turned into what he is now because of how you've pampered him. The less you demand from a man, the less valuable you appear in his eyes. Conversely, the more a man invests in you, the more he will cherish you! By always putting his needs first, you are actually harming him. And you're ultimately harming yourself."
Hazel believed that Scarlett was merely trying to save Kevin's dignity, pretending that Kevin could really afford a car while she chose not to buy one. This misconception prompted Hazel to launch into a lengthy discourse, imparting what she thought were valuable insights to Scarlett.
"Alright, let's not stand around talking here. Let's head into the BBQ restaurant and order some food. We can talk while we eat." Scarlett deftly shifted the topic, ignoring Aaron's blatant condescension.
Kevin had encountered many people like Aaron and Hazel. In this era, most people were like that. If one didn't have money, a house, or a fancy car, they generally looked down on him.
Once one had money, a house, and a luxury car, they would immediately change their attitude, sucking up to him and acting like his best friend or sibling.
So Kevin couldn't be bothered to explain himself to them. This encounter was just an opportunity for them to brag; he'd settle the score the next time they met.
"Kevin, are you still writing e-books? You have such a wonderful wife like Scarlett. I advise you to cherish her and stop wasting time on those false online ventures. Find a decent job, work hard, and maybe you could even become a team leader. With a monthly income of six or seven thousand dollars, that would be decent. It's certainly better than the self-abandonment you're indulging in now." The four barely sat down in the restaurant, and before the waiter took their order, Aaron started to gloat in front of Kevin again.
To official employees in the public sector, aside from public servants and public sector work, all other jobs seemed menial. The plethora of online content was viewed as even more inferior.
They looked down upon freelance work with disdain and arrogance.
Thus, writing e-books was always the focal point of Aaron and Hazel's attacks. It seemed every meeting with the couple included some barbs at Kevin's work.
