Chapter 21

The rest of the afternoon went by quickly. Once we were sure that we had everything we needed for our little excursion Carter suggested we all had a glass of wine. Of course, Bryce had to tease him about wanting to get drunk. The wine was to help us loosen up a bit just in case any of us were feeling nervous as we try to contact ghosts. It was our first time doing this and we weren’t sure if it would go as planned. I was excited and nervous at the same time. Did I believe that we would make contact? Of course not. But it sound fun.
It was seven when Bryce clapped his hands and grinned. “Show time! You ready Carter or do I need to get you a nappy. Just in case you shit your pants.” Bryce joked. “Piss off.” Carter responded nerves evident on his face. It was already dark out and everyone seemed to be hyped up already all thanks to the red wine. I was feeling a bit giddy myself, feeling the alcohol pumping through my veins. To be honest I’d never drank alcohol before. I didn’t actually like the taste, but I drank it anyway.
“So, are we ready?” Bryce asked more serious this time.
“Definitely ready.” Kingsley replied with a nod. We all stood from our seats and started cleaning up, Carter and Taylor headed to the living room and started lighting up the candles. Kingsley helped me with throwing away the cartons and paper plates and not ten minutes after, we were all in the living room, standing around the table. The lights were still on all around the house and once we were ready, Elijah would shut the power out for complete darkness. No white noise, no electricity—just the sounds of our breathing and the candle lights illuminating the room.
I stared at the Ouija board with a fast heartbeat as it laid there on the table, no longer dusty but it was now clean. I wondered what kind of demon was trapped in the board, and would it ever come to attack us. Even if Bryce made sure to prepare everything how could you stop a demon from possessing you? I couldn’t help but start to worry. What if this went wrong?
“Alright,” Bryce breathed out. “Elijah, cut the power out. Just leave the safe open so we can easily turn the lights back on in case something goes wrong.” Bryce had just mention “Something goes wrong” and a shiver ran down my spine.
Elijah nodded before running out the living room. The main switch of the house was located just next to the back door of the house, so it was quite a run from the living room to the back of the house.
“Get ready, guys.” Bryce said. After a minute, all the lights went out which meant that Elijah had succeeded and should be back any minute.
The room was dark except for the candle lights illuminating the place. I looked out the hallway and it was pitch black and I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
Bryce sat on one of the chairs and we quickly followed suit. I was seated in between Kingsley and Taylor so I felt safer and at ease. Elijah quickly returned and sat on the last vacant seat.
“Alright, Taylor, would you mind telling us the rules?” Bryce asked.
Taylor cleared her throat. “It’s simple. First step, we close our eyes in silence and imagine ourselves that we are alone and that we are in a dark room with nothing else with us. Once I give the signal, we hold hands, and I will start calling out to spirits, and once I am finished, we begin our contact with the ghosts. Once we begin, we each place a hand on the planchette—not heavily, okay?? Just let your hand float a little—and I will ask the questions. We all have to stay quiet whatever happens. Got it??”
We all nodded quietly, the tension slowly rising as we were about to begin.
“Alright, let’s hold hands.” Taylor said quietly. We did as we were told, and as Taylor closed her eyes, we did as well.
“Imagine yourselves sitting inside a dark room. You cannot see anything, hear anything, or feel anything. Not until a ghost allows you to communicate with them. Open your mind and your heart to them, clear your head of any thoughts, of any worries. Let’s all sit in silence as we welcome the darkness.”
I could feel my heart racing as I did what Taylor had said. We were all quiet, focusing on putting our minds to our excursion until Taylor spoke again.
“We call upon the darkness, the veil to the other side, we ask that it may be opened to our home as we contact the dead who have left us so suddenly.” Taylor began.
“We call upon the poor souls who wandered the forests of Goldpeak, the poor souls who never made it out alive, the souls whom no person was able to save.” She then added, a little more loudly. I could feel the room growing colder and the wind rattling the windows outside. The branches of trees dragging against the glass, and it only made everything more eerie.
“If you can hear us, if any of you can hear our call, show yourselves and tell us how we can stop the monstrosity in this town. We mean no harm. We open our veil to the other side and show to us someone who can help us.”
I felt Taylor let go of my hand and I opened my eyes. She had already let go and the rest were just opening their eyes as well.
“Let’s begin.” Taylor said quietly. “Someone is already here.”
