Chapter 64
“Focus, you moron. There’s no way you would exchange your immortality for anything. Quit bluffing.” Irene sneered and it only made Yoongi laugh even harder.
I couldn’t help but look at the three of them. Despite being Lucifer’s offspring, they still looked like your typical siblings; they also fight, they get into misunderstandings, they sound like they hate each other’s guts. But in reality, they were willing to risk anything to save each other. It was something so endearing to see knowing that they’re supposed to be evil. Looking at them, it was easy to tell yourself that they aren’t Lucifer’s children, but a caring family.
My ears suddenly picked up a weird sound, something like wind whooshing and a pair of heavy steps against dried leaves. I knew I wasn’t the only who heard it when I felt the siblings freeze and tense up.
“We’ve got company.” Taehyung whispered. I could feel the sudden nervousness creeping to my chest that the light in my hand slightly wavered. I regained my composure as I looked around and stayed alert, ready to help what I can despite knowing the heavy truth that I couldn’t use my powers to hurt anyone—it was against our beliefs.
Hecate, forgive me, mother, if I ever release even a pinch of your powers to hurt those around me. Please understand that I am trying to save a sister and a friend, fighting for the better good. Your guidance is what I need to keep me under your light and not stray from it.
There was another whoosh behind us, and this time closer. The four of us instinctively huddled in a circle, facing outwards as we looked around the dark woods. I was tempted to throw light towards the direction I sensed someone is, but I was afraid I might hurt an animal instead. I can never forgive myself then.
“Pathetic children of Lucifer,” the voice of a woman echoed around us. “You all look miserable trying to save yourself in the middle of the woods. You can’t even make use of your powers when you step foot to that mountain. Consider yourself worthless.”
“Then come out, you coward. You couldn’t even show your face.” Irene spat. The woman in the shadows laughed.
“I’m waiting for the perfect time to strike, girl. I will not allow myself to succumb into the temptation of ripping your hearts out; where’s the fun in that?”
I was following the sound of her voice as she circled us. I was thankful that she kept talking as I was able to follow and sense where she exactly was. With the right precision and estimation, I mustered up all my strength and said a quick prayer apologizing for my actions as I raised my glowing hand and aimed, the ball of glowing sunlight flying through the darkness and it hit the woman square in the face, her screams of agony piercing my ears as she fell to the ground.
“Ella!” Irene gasped in surprise. Without missing another beat, Yoongi ran in super speed as he pulled the woman up, her face swelling red as blisters bubbled and blood oozed out of her burnt face.
“Not so strong now, huh?” Taehyung smirked as the woman continued to whine and writhe in pain against Yoongi’s hold. Taehyung could only look back at me with a pleased smile.
“That’s my girl.”
But I didn’t feel like a winner at all. I felt horrible for going against my beliefs and hurting someone. It wasn’t in my nature, and I could feel myself crumble as I fought the urge to fall to my knees. I couldn’t show weakness now that I have done something that shocked everyone even myself.
And I most definitely couldn’t show weakness now that I can hear even more footsteps approaching us from behind, and soon enough we were outnumbered.
The four of us remained still as we waited for the footsteps to approach us. We all stood guard, Yoongi holding up the crying woman whose face continued to swell as blisters popped and grew. It was like our way of saying, “We did this, so don’t try coming at us.”
“Tell your friends to come out or we burn you alive.” Yoongi threatened as he gave the woman a hard push yet he continued to restrain her arms from behind.
“I came here alone, you demon.” The woman tried to muster up the words without her lips slacking off.
“You’re lying.” Irene spat. “Our little witch friend here isn’t afraid to burn your whole head off if you don’t start talking.”
Irene was wrong. I was already afraid.
I tried my best to muster a brave face, acting as if I had not done anything against my nature. But I did, and now I was afraid what consequences await me. Worst case scenario; I would be stripped off of my powers and the goddesses burn me alive.
“I’m alone!” The woman cried out again. Bits of her hair began falling from her head from the burn that touched her scalp. “Don’t you understand? This is a game, you fools. This is a game for power and rule. You win this, you will be unstoppable and even Lucifer will bow down before you. Of course every supernatural would be here fighting for the win. You would be a fool to waste such an opportunity.”
“Well, you just wasted your opportunity for coming here alone and being stupid. Do you honestly think you can stand against us, or the rest of the supernatural’s coming in here in groups?” Taehyung scoffed. “You’re about to lose your head, and you talk about winning.”
“Enough bickering, you unworthy creatures.”
Another voice joined. I looked up from the burning woman and saw that there were at least a dozen of supernatural’s standing before us. I could feel the blood draining from my face as I counted each of them, looking back at their wild stares and clenching fists, ready to fight and kill for this prize. Aside from the fact that they had powers, we were obviously outnumbered.
“Finish that girl off so we can start the real fight here.” The man who led the small army said as he gestured at the woman Yoongi held. “You’re not stepping foot on that mountain unless you kill me and my pack.”
“You underestimate us, dog.” Taehyung snapped. His eyes were glowing red and his breathing became uneven. So these are werewolves.
Wait, werewolves? Witches and werewolves are supposed to be friends.
Oh no.
And I can’t hurt them. My coven signed a peace treaty with werewolves. Well, not all of them anyway; only those who live among us.
“I smell a witch,” The woman next to the alpha grinned. “That makes three to many. Witches can’t hurt us.”
“And you can’t hurt me.” I quickly added, mustering my bravest face, and praying to Hecate my knees weren’t buckling. “If I even get a single hair out of place I’m burning the ground below you and put you in a never-ending pit of fire.”
The light in my hand glowed brighter and I watched as a few of them took a few steps back, the alpha’s stare slightly wavering but he was able to keep his composure.
“Witch, come on. Why are you even with these demons? They’ll betray you once they get what they want.” The alpha explained. “Join us. We’re an ally, aren’t we?”
“She’s not going anywhere,” Taehyung growled.
The woman smirked as she took a few steps forward. “She would be a fool to keep siding you, knowing that you’ll only kill her if you were finished with her. She would be safe with us, and we’ll win this race together. Isn’t that right, Luna?”
I kept my eyes trained on them, not affording a blink or a quiver of my lips. One small show of vulnerability and I would be over.
