Chapter 20: Was She Homeless Now?
It's already past ten in the evening, and her employer walked to her, "Kendra, it's been late. You can go home now. Thank you so much for helping me these days."
"That's all right. I'm so grateful you accepted me to have this part-time job. I have to go now,"
"Okay, take care,"
Kendra walked out of the pastry shop and smiled happily. She earned hundreds of dollars these days. Though it was not much, Kendra was satisfied. At least, she was close to her success.
Kendra looked up to the sky and noticed it was so late. She had been back too late for days. Lendon didn't find it yesterday. Kendra hoped that he was still busy today.
When the taxi approached the forest, the driver stopped and said, "This is private property. I can't go ahead anymore. Someone tells me to stop."
"What? Usually, we can go in. What's happening?" Kendra said confusedly.
"I am afraid that you must get off here." The driver said.
"Okay," Kendra said and paid her bill. She got off and walked to the castle. As soon as she got close to the castle, one of the guards stopped her.
"You can't go inside."
"You don't know me?" Kendra pointed at herself and explained, "I live here. You can ask Curtis."
"We know you. But Mr. Martin ordered us to stop you here." A guard said.
Kendra finally realized what happened. It was Lendon.
Kendra looked at the castle and sneered, "Fine." She turned around and left. Who wanted to go back in this cage? She thought.
Lendon sat inside his study and felt impatient. He knocked on the table regularly to control his anger. He had been waiting for a long time, but Kendra still didn't come back. Where did that woman go? He silently asked, feeling unhappy, thinking Kendra's been so stubborn lately.
Suddenly, Lendon patted the table and shouted, "Curtis."
"My Lord," Curtis walked in and said.
"Kendra hasn't come back yet?" Lendon asked, and his face was gloomy.
"Miss Miller came back just a few minutes ago, but..." Curtis hesitated; he was lost for words, knowing Lendon's temper.
"Where is she?" Lendon demanded.
"She left," Dropping his head, Curtis calmly said.
"What?" Lendon stood up and screamed, "Damn it! Where is she now?" He kicked a vase and frowned. Good, Kendra dared not to come back and pissed him off.
"When did she leave?" Lendon asked.
"A few minutes ago," Curtis answered.
"Bring her back! Damn it! She's getting into my nerves," Lendon smashed another vase and shouted.
Curtis looked at those broken expensive vases and sighed. He nodded and walked out.
Kendra wandered in the street and somehow felt sad. She couldn't go back to the castle or her school. It was too late. Was she homeless now? Lendon was so cruel. Now that he kicked her out, would she still go back to his castle? If she didn't need to go back forever, it would be good. She's free then. Anyway, it was her primary purpose. But where could she go now?
When Kendra passed a store, she was attracted by a doll settled on the display rack.
"So beautiful!" Kendra sighed. However, she heard someone saying the exact words in a monotone. She turned around and saw Michael standing behind her.
"Michael!" Kendra was surprised to see him.
"Yes, it's me." Michael smiled at her. He put his hands in his pocket and raised his eyebrows to Kendra.
"What are you doing here?" Kendra asked. How could he appear here suddenly?
"I have been following you for a while. You're so focused on your thoughts and barely notice your surroundings," Michael said casually.
"Why are you following me?" Kendra stepped back and asked cautiously.
"When I walked out of my office, I saw you wandering alone. I am curious, so I followed you." Michael explained.
"You just got off work?" Kendra felt relieved and asked.
"Yes, you know, when you become a boss, you can never be free." Michael smiled and said, "Why don't you go home? It's so late."
Home? Which home could she go to? Kendra smiled bitterly and said, "I just want to walk for a while." She didn't want to tell Michael what happened.
"You don't look like walking. You're being kicked out?" Michael guessed. He was a lawyer. So he found Kendra was lying upon seeing her expression and observing her reaction.
Kendra felt awkward and blushed.
"You have nowhere to go?" Michael's voice rang again.
"It's late. I need to go now." Kendra said and turned around. She didn't want to waste time with Michael.
"Don't go." Michael stopped Kendra and said, "If you don't have a place to go, you can stay in my apartment tonight. It's dangerous for you to walk alone outside."
"Will I be safe at your apartment?" Kendra asked.
"Of course, at least, I won't hurt you. I am your fiancé, remember." Michael gave a warm smile to her.
"I told you that Bianca is now your fiancée." Kendra sneered and said. She walked past Michael and went ahead quickly.
"I don't accept it. We are engaged since we're young. Why did you let your sister replace you?" Michael followed Kendra, trying to act calmly.
"It's not me. My father doesn't want me to marry you. Besides, I am not a Miller anymore. How can I marry you?" Kendra halted, glanced at Michael, and said helplessly.
"You care about your identity?" Confused, Michael asked her.
"Yes," Without any hesitation, she answered. She didn't want a marriage that was not blessed at the beginning. She didn't even know anything about Michael even before. How could she marry him?
"That's not a question," Michael tried to convince her.
"How come?" She couldn't believe what she heard.
"If you marry me, you will be rich and have noble status. You don't need to worry about your identity anymore." Michael raised his eyebrows and said seriously.
"Are you serious?" Kendra frowned, couldn't believe what she heard.
"Of course!" Michael said.
"I said I wouldn't marry you. If you don't like Bianca, go to my father and tell him straight. Please don't bother me again. I have my own plan in life. Spare me," Kendra begged.
"But I want to marry you." Michael stared at Kendra and said stubbornly.
Kendra was confused. What did he mean?
"Is it yours?" Michael took an amulet out of his pocket and showed it to her.
"Why did you have it?" Kendra asked surprisingly and wanted to take it back.
However, Michael stepped back and said, "It's mine now."
"Asshole! Give it back to me," Kendra glared at Michael and complained.
"We don't need to talk about engagement now. It's been late. It would be best if you found somewhere to stay. My apartment is near. Shall we go?" Michael ignored her.
"No." Kendra refused immediately.
"Don't take me wrong. I will leave you there alone. It's not my attitude to take advantage of a woman, mostly if it's important to me," Michael explained.
Kendra felt so troubled. If she refused Michael's suggestion, she had to stay in a hotel, which meant that she had to pay for it. But if she went to Michael's apartment…
"Don't worry. I won't stay there. You will be safe." Michael promised again.
Kendra hesitated for a while and finally decided to accept Michael's help. "Thank you." She said,
"Let's go. I will take you there." Michael smiled and walked forward.
