Chapter nineteen: She Is Stuck In My Head
Chapter nineteen: She Is Stuck In My Head
Gregorio
It didn't take long before Camilla pulled away from the curb and dove away. Like Susan said, it took her a few tries before the engine of her small car started up.
I followed her behind from a distance, so she wouldn't see me until we arrived at what I am guessing to be Robin's place. The house was just as crab as her car and I wondered how on earth she could afford to stay in that hotel. I parked on the road side and watched as she loaded in a series of bags before and drove off ten minutes after.
It gave me peace of mind seeing hee unharmed but that didn't change the fact that Robin would still be seeing me again very soon. I texted Susan telling her everything went fine before contemplating on what to do now. But I need to get a grip of myself first. I really shouldn't be wasting my time on making sure someone who is practically a stranger to me was safe.
We are the mafias after all, I could have sent out one quick order and someone else would have kept an eye on her but I didn't. Instead, I did the work myself. Just as I was about to leave, my phone buzzed and looking from it, it was a message from my brother, Adriano.
'Raphael called, get back to the base now.'
Raphael is our father, the head of our mafia. We started addressing him by his first name a long time ago and guessing my brother's vagueness, it is not good news for Camilla.
The worst part of it is that if we get the order to kill her, we would have no choice but to do it. I can only hope that is not the case.
'I will be right there in twenty-five minutes.' I replied.
I didn't wait for his response, I tossed my phone in the front console and drove from the sidewalk and sped out of whatever poor neighborhood I was in.
Honestly, I was a little nervous about the news. I wasn't ready to hear that I had to kill that beautiful girl but I didn't exactly have a choice. Taking the elevator up, I saw that both my brothers were already in the room and wearing grim looks on their faces.
"So…" I said, waiting to hear the news.
"What is the verdict?"
"We are off work for the next one month." Adriano responded, taking a large gulp of whatever he was drinking in his hand.
"What do you mean off work?" I asked, a little bit surprised.
"I mean, Raphael said we need to lay low until things settle down. Apparently Lucas's followers are planning something big and he doesn't want us to spook him by poking around too much." Adriano said, dropping his glass on the table.
"It is a load of bullshit if you ask me. If he is up to something, we should only be pressing harder to take him down now." I added.
This seriously doesn't make any sense, we don't just get one month off. That is not how it works with us.
"What is the catch here?" I asked.
"I don't know and that is the problem." He brought his phone to read what I assumed to be the message from Raphael.
'Son you and brothers need to learn the value of patience. Lucas needs to feel safe enough to come out if you are going to find him and word getting out that we were looking for him is not what we need." He read and Domenico stood up from the couch that he was sitting on.
"Maybe he is right, we have been pushing a lot lately and it could come back to bite us in the ass. It is obvious at this point that Lucas knows how to hide and snakes don't come out of hiding if they think there is still a threat outside."
"It is fucking stupid, he knows we are trying to get him either way. We can just sit around and wait for something bad to happen." Adriano argues.
"Well, I personally have no opposition to having a month-long vacation. It is…"
"What about Camilla?" I interrupted Domenico's words, completely switching the topic.
I couldn't care less about getting a month off, I will think about it later. But right now, I just need to know if the death of yet another is going to be on our hands.
"What about her?" Adriano grumbles, suddenly becoming seemingly evasive.
"What did Raphael have to say about the incident?"
He stays quiet and looks to be having an internal battle with himself. Looking towards Domenico, I try to find clarification from him. He is the mind reader after all, he just smiles at me and I can tell this only worsens Adriano's decreasing mood.
"What is it?"
"He didn't tell him." Domenico responded.
"What?"
"Adriano covered the whole thing up and as far as Raphael goes, he had never heard the name Camilla Ranger before."
Holy shít, looking at Adriano, I can't help but be a little surprised. Adriano became the most emotionally detached from training out of the three of us. I could tell that he wanted Camilla just as much as I did last night but I didn't think he would defy Raphael over her.
"So now what? We just leave her to live her life?"
"I don't know." Adriano snapped at me.
I haven't seen him this worked up in years but it is kind of nice to see. It makes the emotionless, scar-covered man before me seem a little more human.
"I don't know." He said again but this time much quieter.
"I would say, we just leave her alone." Domenico said.
"A lot of trouble could come from keeping her around and let's be honest, we don't even know her. Yes she is beautiful but she is also a stranger."
"Are you saying that you don't want her?" I questioned.
"What I am saying is that it is not worth it. She doesn't come from our world and placing her there would only lead to an inevitable disaster. That is also assuming she even wants us, let's remember that. It is not like we would be easy people to be with, not to mention the fact that we were probably now the cause of her nightmares."
Domenico is not wrong but my mind keeps drifting to every response she had to my touch earlier and how perfect she could be for the three of us. Maybe she could shed a little light on our dark and fucked up lives.
"So, we will just leave it then. She is just a nuisance to us anyways." Adriano said.
"I just don't want her blood on my hand but it is not like she is nothing we couldn't find at the club."
What a fucking liar, he is tone was convincing but I knew him better than to believe that bullshit. And Domenico, by the way he shakes his head at Adriano's words, smiling from his denial. I didn't say anything because despite my slight disappointment, I know it is for the best. I changed the topic instead.
"Now, what the hell are we going to do for the next four weeks?"
"Crazy thought but maybe we could relax?" Domenico replied sarcastically.
"Very funny."
"Well. I mean, Daniel's wedding is coming up this weekend, we can kill some time there and figure the rest out after." Adriano suggested.
"Maybe we will be lucky enough to scoop up one of the bridesmaid while we were there." Domenico jokes.
We all laughed because we knew it was probably going to happen. But in the back of my mind, there is still a particular girl that I can't just seem to shake off.
She is stuck in my head.
