Chapter 37: My Father Is Alive

Chapter 37: My Father Is Alive

Camilla

"Do you think one of you could drive me back home?" I asked, I just wanted to make sure that all of my things are in place.

"Of course, Gregorio can take you home now." Domenico said and Gregorio shot his head, looking at Adriano. His eyes narrowed in question but Adriano reveals nothing.

"I will see you tomorrow at work." Adriano said before walking away without saying another word.

It is clear that something else is going on that I don't know about but it is not any of my business though. Raising from the couch, Gregorio tossed his book down on the table before turning to me.

"I am ready when you are ready." I gave him a nod.

Moving away from the counter, my hold tightens ever so slightly around my dress to ensure that it doesn't fall. I find my shoes neatly placed together to the right side of the elevator door and I take a step towards them. I didn't get far though when Domenico came up from behind and wrapped his hand around my waist.

Gregorio leans against the wall and watches as his brother gathers my hair, pushing it to rest on my left shoulder. Leaning down to the right, I remain completely frozen as his mouth sits right below my ear.

"Thank you…" he said, his lips brushing ever so slightly against my skin.

"For last night." He completed his sentence.

A tingle passes down my spine at his touch but before I can find the right word to respond, he lets go of me and walks off in the same direction his brother Adrano did a moment ago. Remembering that Gregorio was there, I look at him utterly speechless. And something that looks a lot like lust passes through those hazel eyes of his but he didn't say anything. Instead, he reached over to his side and pressed the button to the elevator. The door opened instantly and he motioned me to go in first.

"After you." I walked into the elevator and he followed behind.

*********

Talking with Gregorio was surprisingly a lot easier than I thought it would be. Not once during the drive back home did he mention last night or this morning with Domenico and I really appreciate that.

Instead, we listened to music and laughed together for almost thirty minutes until he pulled up to the driveway. He first steps out of the car and opens the door for me, offering me his hand. Our arms were intertwined as we walked up the sidewalk and to the front door.

Finding the door open, we let ourselves in but I instantly removed my hand from his at the smell filling the entire house. This is not possible.

"Camilla?" I subconsciously heard his voice and Nancy's voice following.

This is not possible, I can already feel hot tears beginning to roll down my eyes but I ignored them. Moving quickly into my room, I find that same scent filling the entire space.

"Hey?" Gregorio said, shaking my shoulder and getting me to look at him, there was concern, confusion and expression all over his face.

"What is going on?" He asked, wiping away a tear currently falling down my cheek.

Nancy was leaning against the door frame and they both looked surprised as the biggest smile appeared across my face.

"My father," I muttered through my tears of overwhelming happiness and relief.

"My father was here, he is alive."

Gregorio POV

Something is extremely off right now and I can't even figure it out. Camilla's so-called father is named Jacob Ranger and ever since I saw those tears falling down her eyes yesterday, I have used every resource available to find this man.

Something is very off because as far as the world is concerned, Jacob Ranger doesn't even exist. Under other circumstances, this wouldn't have been a big deal. I have seen crazier things happen but what I can't wrap my head around is that there is no trace of either of Camilla's parents ever being born. No birth certificate, so social media, nothing at all.

I don't if she is aware of this and in all honesty, I am not sure I want her to know. Yesterday once the tears stained her face ceased, she sat down and told me a lot about her father. How he went missing and how she was sure this was his way of saying he was safe without revealing himself to a lot of enemies he has made over the years.

And now, I don't know how to tell her that her parents have been lying about their identity for entire life. I could see just how one smell brought her the peace of mind she has been searching for during the last one year of her life. I don't want to be the one to take that away from her, especially if I can't figure out what the hell is going on.

Adriano didn't say anything when I told him about this discovery and Domenico simply provided his two cents where he could. There we have many resources higher up but we can't risk our father finding out about Camilla or her family. I have quickly grown protective of her and it is becoming a dangerous weakness for me, for all of us. I can tell Domenico has also become attached to her.

Two nights ago when Domenico placed her in one of our guest rooms. We had the realest conversation we have ever had. It was short but he said he was scared. I have never once heard Domenico Jaxson admit he was fearful about something until that night. And when I asked what he was afraid of he merely responded.

'To feel again.'

That was the end of our conversation. He was scared to feel again and I can see it in his eye the relentless emotion battling inside his head. Camilla had kissed him and I know he didn't take it slightly. None of us did anyways which is why I am so intent on trying to figure out this puzzle for her.

She made it very clear that her concerns were never because her father left but the possibility of him never returning. I can understand that but it is also clear that there is a lot she doesn't know about her family.

After hearing about the town she grew up in, I am not surprised that her father may have messed with the wrong people and needed to flee. But even then, it takes a lot of money and power to fake your identities and remain entirely unnoticed by more than one professional investigator.

I should be able to find him but I didn't and that is what is throwing me off the most. The only person I was able to find was her stepfather. From just one glance, I can already tell he is a real piece of work. His criminal record is lengthy, only beginning with physical assault, vandalism, breaking and entering and also theft of vehicle parts.

He has been married three times and divorced twice and he is currently wedded to Camilla's mother who still goes by the name Monica Ranger despite remarrying. Following his trail, I was able to find his and Monica's marriage certificate and then Monica and Jacob's marriage certificate as well but from there, everything became blank.

I didn't get much sleep last night and I am sure it shows on my face but I only force my eyes away from my computer at the sound of my office door opening. Turning to the door, I saw Adriano walk in with a satisfied look on his face.

"I am guessing things went well then?" I asked and it only caused his expression to grow wider.

"I sent the boys out." He said, pulling up a clip on his phone.

"It was a truly horrible accident."

Looking down at his phone, I saw a video footage of Robin walking out of the door leading into his garage. I watched as he walked down the three steps before moving to open the door of his car. Just as his hand reaches out for the handle, one of the shelves screwed into the roof above him breaks free and comes crashing down on his limb.

The next ten seconds of the video are of him screaming out in pain and clutching his now shattered arm in his remaining hand. How did our base assassins manage to precisely get that shelf to drop onto Robin's arm and car? Other things were not a mystery to me but I didn't question their work.

Seeing that the video ends, I gave him his phone back. I am more than pleased with the outcome. I haven't forgotten for a second his actions towards Camilla so I made sure to do my research thoroughly before jumping ahead.

I found out that Robin is currently working as a high ranking officer at one of the police stations in the city. After a lot of digging, I discovered that he was just recently accepted as a candidate for the major crimes unit. Something he has been working towards since the first time he joined the police training.

The standards are extremely high to become a homicide detective and having a shattered arm will put him in recovery for about five months for more. After that, it may take an additional month until he is fully capable of using his arms again. Let us say that he can just say goodbye to achieving that dream of his any time soon.

He will have to wait for another opening which according to my research probably won't happen for a long time. Compared to some other things we have done, this is highly merciful on our ends.

I don't feel bad for a second. He dares to make Camilla cry, he dares to cheat on her. He deserves more than he has already gotten.
