Chapter 38: We Just Want To Talk
Chapter 38: We Just Want To Talk
Gregorio
"You need to take a break." Adrano said as he noticed my tired state.
He wasn't wrong but I really wanted what the fuck is going on with Camilla's family. Talking to her to get more information is the easiest idea but I don't want to sit in a room with her and lie to her face the entire time. She doesn't deserve that and I refused to be that person. I sighed and rubbed my hand down my face.
"Are we going to tell her?" I asked, shutting down my computer. He was silent for a moment as if debating on my question himself.
"Yes," he finally breaks the silence.
"She deserves to determine what she can and cannot handle, it is her choice." I simply nodded my head in response.
"I will call Nancy and find out where she is so we can tell her in person." I said, retrieving my phone from my pocket.
He didn't wait, he left me on my own. Having her number memorized and she picked up on the second ring.
"I was wondering when you would call to check in." Nancy said as she picked up the call.
"Hello to you too." I joked at her ever so welcoming greetings and she just laughed.
"Camilla isn't at home right now if that is who you are looking for." She said, cutting right through my bullshit.
"And where exactly could I find the said person?" I asked, earning myself a sigh from her side.
"Do you know what you are doing?" She counters, not giving me an answer.
"Weren't you the one that purposely sent Camilla back home with us the other night?"
"That was before someone broke into my house which I might think is likely linked to your assholes in some way."
"We know what we are doing, Camilla will always be safe with us." She hummed.
"So, are you going to tell me where she is now?" I asked.
"No, she could use some normal time on her own but if you can find her some other way then I can't control that." She said and hung up, realizing that was all I called her for.
Great, I have to think for a moment but since she said Camilla needs privacy, there is only place out of the house I can think of as to where she would be. Looks like we are going to be visiting Susan soon as well.

The three of us drove to Susan's place and I don't think our aunt is very pleased to see us. Like she did with Robin, the three of us are currently stuck outside with a highly displeased cafe owner.
"I thought I told you to keep her out of your bullshit?" She rounds to me with her arms crossed.
"We know but you know how things are in our world. At least, she is under our protection when she is with us." I said but I don't think my words calmed her down though.
"We just came here to talk, something weird is going on with her family and…."
"Don't you think I know that already?" She cut me off.
"That girl has been through hell her entire childhood but every time I saw anything that remotely touches the subject, she would brush it off and change the topic with a smile like nothing was wrong."
"We just need to talk…."
"No, everyone around you three eventually ends up hurt or dead." She protested and I can tell her words are coming from a place of concern.
"This…"
"How about instead of discussing Camilla's life for her, we go in and let her decide what she thinks?" Adrano cuts in and I can tell this conversation has not settled well with him.
"I have very quickly come to love that girl like family and you know how protective I am of family." She said, looking at the three of us.
"We understand that but she has the right to know, keeping her in the dark about this only hurts her." Domenico added, keeping his voice calm.
I can see that Susan's every word is driven by wanting to help Camilla but we are going to talk to her at some point either way. After a long silence, Susan opens the glass door to the cafe with a sign, giving us all a look before moving behind the counter.
Considering it is almost lunch break right now, the cafe is extremely busy. But despite this, when we step around the large queue of customers, I can see Camilla taking up one of the largest booths here and I can guarantee that it was Susan who places her there too.
Her hair is tied up in a low ponytail and some of the shorter strands falling out in random places around her face. She just brushed them aside when need be. The round table she was sitting at was covered with different papers and photos and a computer in the center front of her.
Even though we didn't say a word, she looked up at the door and was surprised to see us there. When she looks at Susan right after, I can't help but wonder if there was a previous conversation between the two of them about us. But then, when Susan just shrugged at her, she actually smiled and waved at us. Adrano was the first to move, then me and Domenico followed.
"What brings you guys here?" She asked as we were standing at the head of her table.
"We came to see you." Adrano responds and takes a seat beside her when she motions. I moved to the other side and Domenico followed me.
"Sorry about the mess, just move anything that is in your way." She said, referring to the paper that covered the table.
"What are you working on?" I asked, glancing over at her computer to find thousands of images from Daniel's wedding.
"The photographer isn't in town now so I have to edit the pictures myself." She said and moved back onto the image she was editing before we came in.
"We came to talk to you about your father." Adrano said, stealing away her attention from the screen instantly.
"Okay," she said with a slightly concerned tone.
Adrano then looked at me because I was the one that did all of the research.
"I know you said he has been missing for a while now and being who we are, we have a lot of resources available to us for finding people." I said and it kills me when l saw a glimpse of hope in her eyes.
"I looked into your father for you…"
"Were you able to find him?" She asked, this is really sucks.
"I am sorry." That was all I am able to say.
Instantly, I saw that my words disappointed her but she just tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear and looks back to her computer.
"That is not all," I continue, knowing I have her full attention even if she is not looking at me.
"During my research, I couldn't find either your mother or father anywhere. There is no sign that either of them were ever born."
The three of us silently looked at her when I was done speaking and after a few clicks on her computer, she finally flickered her head up to me.
"That doesn't really surprise me, my father is a real conservative man." She said and we stared at her in disbelief.
"Anyways, it makes sense that he would want to hide his identity from the countless numbers of people he has managed to wronged all his life." She said as if her entire family ceasing to exist isn't a big deal.
"You are not bothered by this?" Domenico asked and I can tell by the way he was looking at her and he was doing his whole mind reading game.
"I was disappointed you couldn't find my father but I know he is alive and hopefully well. So I couldn't care less about some hospital records." Domenico nodded, giving us a sign that it was indeed the truth for her. Not what I expected.
"Do you want any food?" She said, motioning to her plate full of muffins and small cut sandwiches to her right.
Considering that I haven't had anything to eat in the last twenty hours, I happily take her up on her offer of the muffin.
"Thank you," I said just as Domenico reached over for a sandwich slice.
Adrano only takes something when she looks up at him as if wanting for him to eat too. Satisfied by this, her attention shifted back to her computer and I recognized she had some apps to edit the pictures.
"How is the editing going?" Adrano asked after swallowing an entire half of the muffin he took in one bite.
Camilla raised her eyebrows, surprised by his question but then she shifted her computer slightly towards him.
Clicking the scroller, I can assume she is going through some of the pictures with him. He just silently observes, keeping quiet until a particular picture pops up that makes a small smile appear on his face.
It happens to be the one that she tries to scroll right past but Adrano stops her.
