Chapter 39: Working At The Club
Gregorio
"Pull that one back," Adrano said and she reluctantly brought the picture back, revealing it on the computer screen.
Adrano turns the computer screen towards us and shows us the picture of the three of us including Nancy with slight stunned looks on our faces at the wedding. This picture was taken after she found out that we were the ones that man and wanted to prove a point to us.
Domenico and I laughed before he made a comment on how we should get that picture frame. I have even forgotten that she took a picture of us that day. I agree with Domenico, it is worth framing though. I don't think I have ever seen my brother, Adrano look so caught off guard before.
"Anyways," she said under her breath, moving on to the other pictures.
"About that night, I still have a lot of questions unanswered." She mumbled, catching all of our attention.
It is understandable and we have already prepared for this discussion. I just hope she doesn't hate us in the end. She has every right to do so but I don't like the idea of seeing hatred for us in those beautiful eyes of hers.
"What do you want to know?" Domenico asked beside me, clearly deciding to lead the conversation.
"What did you guys plan to do with me once you knocked me out?" She jumps right in, the question directed entirely to Domenico and I can see him stiffen before regaining his composure.
"I honestly don't know. At that time we just needed to make sure you kept your mouth shut, so knocking you unconscious seemed like the most sensible and least violet option." She nodded her head, she wasn't surprised by his response.
"And what about the police? How did you keep them quiet?"
"Money and connections mostly." Domenico gave the vaguest answer possible.
It is not like we can just outright tell her that we are in the mafia so some of the responses are going to have to be like this.
"Why did you give me my phone back?" She turned to Adrano and honestly, I was just as interested to know the reason as she is.
None of us said anything about his actions that night but it has been in the back of my mind since I saw the footage of him leaving her room. She didn't rush to get a response from him and Adrano was trying to find the right word to explain himself.
"The truth is that…" he paused for a moment.
"I wanted to see you again." He completes his sentence and spins one of the rings on his fingers, not giving her an opening to comment on it.
"What else?" He asked, looking at her.
"Do you always keep a gun on you?" Adrano raised his eyebrows at her question.
"It would seem rather convenient for you to just randomly have a gun on you that night. So do you always carry a gun around?"
"Why do you want to know?" He asked.
"What makes you feel unsafe enough that you feel the need to bring a gun with you to a cafe?" She asked, her eyes looking down to the opening of his jacket.
The angel Adrano was leaning his arms against the table reveals the outline of his gun obvious to those specifically seeking it out. Not bothering to cover it, he leans a bit closer so his next word can be said as a whisper.
"Does it scare you?" He whispered.
Although he said it to be intimidating, there is more meaning to the question. He wants to know if there is a chance with her even after learning what kind of people we are.
"No," she said, her voice unwavering.
"It doesn't scare me at all."
I am sure what she meant was you don't scare me in her statement. Our conversation goes dead silent for a second, she never breaks her gaze or moves in her seat. As if he was satisfied by her response, Adrano was the first to move, leaning back in his seat.
"You can never be too careful in a business like ours."
"I didn't realize owning a nightclub required you to have perfect aim with a gun." She said to Adrano.
"And you, the master of reading people's minds." She looked at Domenico and then turned to me.
"And you are the computer wizard of them all. You were fully confident you could locate a man that even a professional trained private detective couldn't find." I just gave an innocent shrug.
She is really very smart, she is brave which many even make her a little bit stupid but she sees right through our bullshit and calls us out on it too. That is a dangerous quality to have around people like us but I will admit, I like her even more for it and I want her at all cost. We want her at all costs.
Camilla POV
I really underestimate just how high of a demand there was for nightlife on a Friday night here at the club. Having previous bartending experience has proved itself to be extremely useful so far even as I shadow Sara, the bar manager for my shift.
It is just midnight and I think things are going pretty well other than the fact that Sara had some unspoken dislike towards me. I can't figure out why but she has snapped at me multiple times already for the little mistake I have made because I just offered assistance to the other who needs it. I don't know exactly what I did to her but I imagine calling out my supervisor on my first day of work probably wouldn't be the best start.
For now, I kept quiet and continued to serve drinks to the customers. I haven't seen any of the triplets, the owners of Gravity tonight and I find myself both pleased and a bit disappointed by it.
After my conversation with them at Susan's cafe, I don't find myself as concerned to be in their presence as I was before. Growing up in a shitty town with a shitty family desensitized me to a lot more than I would expect.
I wanted an explanation from them more than anything else and they gave me one. I am not stupid, I know there is still a lot of information they withheld from me but I take no offense to it. I don't know anything for sure but I do know they have some sort of side business going on. But I have to doubt, I will eventually figure it out and as for now, they don't scare me anymore. They told me what I wanted to know and so it works for me.
The only problem now is that there is nothing preventing me from acting on my desire for them. Last night, I spent hours thinking about everything that happened between Robin and I and I allowed myself to cry over all the ways he has hurt me. A huge part of me knows l fell out of love with him months before we even broke up but I was simply too scared to finally end things.
I moved the rest of my things from his house today to Nancy's house and she gave me a tight hug when I came back. I felt like a huge part of my life was just closed down but I can't be sad when I feel like I have gained so much more.
I am beginning to feel happy again and I even found myself excited at the thought of starting a new job. Maybe a little at potentially being able to see three particular men as well. I like the way I feel around them.
Leaving Sango Town gave me the clarity I have been needing from them but it also tore down the only barrier that was keeping myself away and my heart safe. But maybe, safety isn't what I needed.
"Hey, Camilla?" One of the other bartenders called my attention.
"There is a man over there, asking for you." She said, pointing behind me.
I turned around to see Domenico sitting down at one of the bar stools, already looking at me with a smirk on his face. Surprisingly, a smile appeared on my face as I walked over to him.
"Mr. Jaxson?" I greeted, mimicking what I heard the other bartenders address him with.
I am not exactly sure of the policy since I know him but I figured formality was a safe bet.
"Hi, darling." He grins at me being formal.
"Domenico is more than fine."
"Well, Domenico. What can I get for you?"
"Oh, nothing for now." He smiles.
"I am actually on my way to a meeting but I wanted to see how things are going on your first day."
"Great so far." I said but that wasn't really the whole truth because I would love to know what grudge Sara has against me.
"Hmmm," he hummed.
"And are the people treating you well?"
Fuck! He is about to do this mind reading thing again. Forcing myself to keep completely still and not letting my eyes blink too much I responded to his question.
"Yes, Sarah has been showing me the ropes around here for most of the time." That wasn't a lie, she was just not with a smile on her face.
"Good," he said and I can't tell if he believes me or not.
Speaking of the devil, just as I was to open my mouth to speak, Sarah comes up beside me and tries to get me to leave.
