Chapter twenty-nine: We Will Take You Home
Chapter twenty-nine: We Will Take You Home
Camilla
Shortly after, Gregorio and Domenico joined their brother behind me but they didn't say anything. The hair on my skin rose in their presence.
"What? You don't like mushrooms?" Gregorio's voice suddenly asked, nearly giving me a heart attack.
Looking down at the pile of vegetables pushed to the side of my plate, I wrinkled my nose in disgust.
"No, I hate them." He chuckled.
"I hate them too." He added.
Looking behind, I noticed that Adriano and Domenico were speaking to some of the other guests. It is almost amusing at how annoyed Adriano looks. He is definitely not a people person but at least he is trying to be polite.
"Hey," Gregorio said, grabbing my attention. Looking up at him, he lets out a short sigh before continuing.
"I came here to say that I am sorry for putting you through all of this."
That most certainly wasn't what I expected him to say.
"I wished we could have met under better circumstances and I know I can't change the past. But I want you to know that we will never put you in that position again." I looked into his eyes and he was genuinely apologizing.
It doesn't make everything okay, but his words meant a lot more to me than he knew.
"Thank you." I murmured but I looked at him to show that I really do appreciate it.
He looks at me so intensely and it causes a warm feeling to spread throughout my body. I wish I could have met him under better circumstances.
The part finally came to an end and I was so thankful for that. A long night's rest is well overdue and after the long day I have had, all I needed now was a good night's rest.
I have packed up the majority of my things and organized them to fit in the back of my small car. Just as my hand goes to reach for the car door handle, my phone buzzes and it draws my attention.
'Six thousand has been deposited into your account.'
'Seven thousand has been deposited into your account.'
What is this? I know this is the money for tonight's work but there is clearly a mistake on Daniel and his wife's part. I charged them seven thousand in total, so why did I receive nearly double?
Tossing the last of my materials at the back of the seat, I walked out of the parking lobby and back to the main crowd. I spotted Daniel almost instantly, there had to be a mistake. He raised his hand as he saw me, gesturing me to come over which I did.
"Hey, I hope you are feeling better?" He was referring to the lie Domenico had told him.
"Thanks for the food by the way, you didn't have to do that."
"I am sorry, what?" He asked in confusion.
"You gave Adriano food to give me to help with my head earlier?" I remind him but my words only cause a look of surprise to appear on his face, before it goes back to a neutral expression.
He tried to cover for his friend's hard-ass personality and now I know that the food came from Adriano himself.
"Never mind." I said, moving on from the topic.
"Anyways, I am all packed up and about to head out but there was an issue with the money transfer for today's work. I just wanted to let you know."
"Oh?" He says in surprise.
"Sorry but it actually wasn't us who paid you. Two of my close friends are splitting the payment with each other as a wedding gift." He explained but I was still surprised.
"If you don't mind me asking, what was the problem?" He asked.
"I just received six thousand more than what I had quoted you with no indication of whom I should be returning it to." He gave me a look that I don't understand.
"Oh, don't worry about that. You did an excellent job today especially considering how last minute everything was."
"Thank you but…."
"No buts," he cuts me off.
"You did a great job and I promise that amount doesn't even come close to making a dent in their wallets."
Would it be unprofessional to ask for the names of who he was talking about?
"Also, my friends very rarely make mistakes. So the additional money was most likely intentional."
He didn't give me the chance to protect as a group of his family members swept in and tried to steal his attention away.
"Sorry dear, but do you mind if we borrow him for a bit?" A lady asked.
"Of course," I smiled at her before turning to Daniel.
"I hope you have a great rest of your night." I said to him.
"Thank you as well." He quickly responded before he was ushered away by his family.
At this point, I was too tired and too drained to overthink it. This entire day has been insane and I think the only cure to calm my racing mind is sleep.
It didn't take me long to reach the parking lobby and hop into the driver's seat. Shutting my eyes closed, I let out a long breath, releasing the majority of my tension along with it. What a fucking day?
Typically, my car at least makes some sort of depressing noise the first few tries before it starts but all I heard now as I slid my key was silence.
"Start you piece of shit!" I mumbled, trying to get it running once again.
Resting my head against the steering wheel, I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. It has been one of the longest days of my life and this is the last thing I need right now.
Groaning in utter annoyance, my heart nearly leaps out of my chest at the sound of a knock coming from against my window. Jolting my head up, I was startled to see Gregorio's handsome face leaning down and looking at me with a lopsided grin. He moved back as I opened my car door to step out.
"Hey," I said, looking down at my feet in absolute embarrassment.
I can't believe this is happening right now, the world couldn't have just let me go home in peace.
"Hey," he replied, eyeing the junk behind me.
"Car troubles?"
"Apparently so." I sighed.
"It just won't start and I am almost positive that the battery has died."
"Hmm," he hummed, still looking at my car.
What is he doing here anyways? I doubt the party will be over for at least another two hours at a minimum.
"Come with me, we will drive you home." He said and by we, I am guessing he means Adriano and Domenico.
"No, it is fine. I am just going to grab a taxi and figure this out tomorrow."
"That is a waste of money and time. Grab what you need and we will go now."
"Gregorio, you don't have…"
"We were about to head out anyway and the hotel is on the way to the club. So it is really not a big deal."
I wanted to protest again but then my mind goes back to our conversation earlier when he apologized and Adriano brought me food on his own accord. I am scared of what they are capable of but I am no longer scared that they would hurt me and one ride wouldn't hurt anyone, at least I hope not.
It didn't take us more than three minutes to get to their ride and I was surprised to find that it reeked of money, just like every other part of them. The roof of their car is down, showing Adriano in the driver's seat. Based on his usual angry expression, I can tell he is already back to his cranky self.
Domenico was next to him and a bright smile appeared on his face at the sight of me.
"Hi, darling. You want a ride?" He grins and I can't help but give him a small grin back.
Gregorio opened the door and gestured for me to enter. I ended up sitting behind Domenico and diagonal to Adriano.
"Let's get out of here." Gregorio said with enthusiasm, patting Adriano's seat from behind.
To my surprise, the car starts up just on the first try and loud music instantly sounds from the stereo. Looking into the rear view mirror, Adriano's grag eyes met mine and a devilish smile appeared on his face.
"Buckle up, princess." He said before speeding out of the parking lobby.
Domenico let out a loud laugh as the music filled the air. It was weird seeing this more relaxed side of them but I enjoyed a break from their overwhelming intensity even if it was in the form of moving at speeds that would surely result in our death if we hit something.
I can't let myself feel relaxed around them, I remind myself that they are too dangerous.
