Chapter twenty-four: She Seems Nice
Chapter twenty-four: She Seems Nice
Camilla
"Susan, please tell me you didn't know."
"I don't know anything but I can guess based on your tone that it wasn't something good." Her voice breaks slightly before she continues.
"Are you hurt?"
"No, but I caught him and…." My phone was abruptly snatched from my hand and hung up.
"Hey!" I started but my words got caught in my throat when I saw the beautiful woman standing behind me.
"Don't be scared, I am not here to hurt you." She promised but I didn't respond.
"Do you think we could talk somewhere in private? I am Nancy by the way."
There is no chance I am leaving until I know what was going on. I didn't answer and as of right now, this girl is the one I am most trusting.
"We have to stay here if you want us to talk, I am working." I said to her and to my surprise, she didn't protest.
"It is Camilla, right?"
"Hmmm,"
"I told them that they are not allowed to hurt you. So if you are worried about that, don't be." She assured me but it doesn't calm me in the least.
Looking back at the table, I noticed that they have left and new people have occupied the table. I didn't see them anywhere as I scanned the environment. I should be trying to leave now while they are gone but why is the Nancy girl here? To keep an eye on me?
"I am really trying not to be rude but what the fúck is going on?" I asked quietly so that the people around us couldn't hear.
I just need some sort of explanation, I don't care who it comes from. My phone vibrated in her hand and the screen lit up, showing that it was Susan trying to call me back. She just tucked my phone in her pocket and looked at me.
"I know a lot must be going through your head right now but just try and keep an open mind at what I have to say, okay?" I gave her a quick look to indicate that I am listening.
"I know you might not understand this but Adriano, Domenico and Gregorio are really good guys." She sighed before continuing.
"That night, a man from my work wouldn't leave me alone and proceeded to follow me back to that hotel. I only noticed this when I got out of the car, I tried to run to the entrance but he cut in front of me, saying he just wanted to talk and that I was really beautiful."
I moved around and continued doing my work but the majority of my attention was on her and what she had to say.
"Since he was blocking my path, I bolted to my nearest escape and soon found myself at the back of the hotel. I was able to pull out my phone the moment I was alone and called Domenico. As my luck may have it, they were already on their way to hang out with me, so they were close by."
I guess it made sense but that still doesn't explain the hundred other questions flooding my head right now. Despite them, I didn't interrupt her, I genuinely wanted to hear her side of things.
"I don't know how you ended up back there but I do know that if it weren't for the three of them, I would have been raped that night. It may make me a bad person but I don't feel any remorse for the man they killed."
Although I didn't admit this out loud, the truth is that I felt the exact same way that night. I could have called her help but I didn't. I continue walking and shooting at the same time but Nancy puts her hand on my arm to grab my attention.
Turning to her, it is not hard to see the genuine look in her eyes, she isn't lying.
"You never should have been involved that night but the three of them were never going to hurt you. Even now, they won't, but they are going to need to talk to you."
She seems to be done speaking now and I tried my best to process all of this information for myself. I believe what she had to say but that still doesn't explain a lot of things.
"So, they just carry guns and masks around all the time then?" It was the first question I asked.
"And how do I have my phone back? And how did the police just let it go?"
I flooded her with multiple questions but in return, she just gave him a sad smile.
"There is a lot about them that even I don't understand but I do know that everything they do is for the most part from a place of good. As for your questions, I think you need to ask them that yourself."
"I am not talking to them, I just need to go home or I guess to the hotel." She was silent a little bit before responding.
"Okay,"
Even though I don't think she believes that can happen, I don't believe it either.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure, go ahead."
"Why were you back there when it was the middle of the night on that day?" I let out a heavy breath before responding.
"Honestly, that is something I have been asking myself as well. I could have just called the police but at the time, I figured it would have taken them too long to get there. I needed some air and when I heard your scream, I was on my way to help you. But others seemed to have beaten me to it anyway." I mumbled out the last part.
"Thank you." Her response surprised me.
I can hear the emotion in her tone, so either she is extremely good at acting or she is being true to her words. I don't understand why I like her as much as I do, she gave me a small smile. I may be in trouble because of that night but I would never forgive myself if I had walked away and something had happened to her.
"Are you still staying in that hotel?" I asked.
"No, my last night was yesterday. My house was being renovated but it is finished now.
I just hummed to indicate I heard her. There is still the issue of my living arrangements too. The money from this project will help but I can't keep spending all of it on a hotel room, I will need to find an apartment soon.
"What about you? Are you still in that hotel?" She asked.
"For now, yes. I am trying to figure some things out right now."
It is kind of weird that our conversation is coming so easily because she seems like a really nice person. Under normal circumstances, I would have even considered getting her phone number.
"Well, I am looking for a roommate if you are interested. I like you."
She can't be serious? As nice as the offer is, there is no way I am living with someone whose friends want me dead, not a chance.
"Thank you but I am okay. I will figure something out." She just gave me a look that I can't read.
"Listen, I am going to give you my contact and if you change your mind, feel free to reach out to me."
"It is honestly fine," I tried, but she is already typing her information into my phone. Stupid thing didn't power off after she hung up on Susan.
Once she is done, she hesitantly hands it back to me.
"Don't do anything stupid, just because those guys aren't going to kill you doesn't mean they will put up with just anything okay?"
"Okay," I said, I wasn't going to call her but the thought was nice I guess.
"And now ladies and gentlemen, we would like to bring out our newlyweds, Mr. & Mrs. Parker, to have their first dance as husband and wife. Let's give them a hand." The DJ announced.
Everyone claps their hands as Daniel and his father make their way to the floor. They are both grinning from ear to ear as the song plays in the background. Nancy backs off, knowing that I need to work. The pair seem so happy together and I already know that these pictures will turn out great as the photographer keeps taking their shots.
Everyone is either laughing, smiling, dancing or a combination of the three and for a moment, I don't feel myself worrying about everything that might go bad.
Now that everything has been done and I don't have to stress myself anymore, I was able to relax. But then I spotted the bride's parents dancing together on the dance floor. They looked so happy and carefree and I watched the photographer to capture that moment. But when I looked in his direction, he was busy eating.
Deciding not to let that moment go, I grabbed the camera but then I felt a hand grab my arms, spun me around to meet a large body.
