"I know who he is." The note on my new shiny desk(not new, since somebody used it before I did, new to me still.) drained the excitement that thrummed my veins after I met with my team manager, she said I could call her Chels because we were one big family here, and she welcomed me like she was truly happy to have me in her team. In her words, you are just the person our team needs to grow even bigger.
When she gave me my ID, I almost ran into a co-worker trying to get to my desk. And these words with unfamiliar handwriting drove chill down my spine. Who was the he in question? It was obviously Kenny. Did someone hear Danielle and i talk about him upstairs and get here before me just to pull this lousy prank on me?
"Hey, you are Lisa right? Name is Sonia, you are one of my partners. My desk is right next to yours and Chels put me in charge of teaching you the ropes and stuff."
I turn to see a woman around my age, introducing herself to me. I shake her outstretched hand after dropping my coffee cup on my desk.
"Nice to meet you Sonia. You said one of your partners, is someone else with us?"
"Yes, we have always sleeping Jenna, and always in a terrible mood Tom, and don't forget never present Dustin. Welcome to the dysfunctional partners, we always come in last in all the projects."
I blink. I could not be in a group that terrible.
"What projects?"
Sonia sighed as if talking about it was the bane of her existence.
"Chels comes up with fun, team bonding and improving projects. Teaming two groups against each other to make us improve and keep us on our toes as we have no idea when the next project will strike. And to our glory, we earned the name, Always behind group."
Nop, I could not be in a group like this. It would kill my spirit. I just started.
"Why are you always behind?"
She gives me a look, "we, you are part of us now. We are always behind because whilst others are competing furiously, Jenna is somewhere sleeping, her phone set on silent, and we can't find her in this huge building in time. Tom is always complaining about something instead of working, and Dustin is never around when we need him. I do everything alone and get the kicked in the butt, thus we never get to work on big projects. We just come in and go back out with a normal salary. Salaries are raised for those who creates the games."
I almost groan. Of course I would get put with this terrible team.
"The salary increase should be a motivation, why aren't they putting more effort?"
Sonia sighed once more.
"I wish I knew. I wanted to let you know, so you know what you are dealing with. Also, if you have any more questions, you can let me know."
I nod in thanks and collapse against my desk. All my excitement from this morning vanished. I feel no need to send Mariana loads of pictures.
"Oh, did you happen to see who left this?" I ask Sonia who was settling back in her desk.
"It was hottie from legal department. Zach was it?" She brightened up as she says this.
Of course, he got never got off the elevator and got here before me. Now I am glad Danielle held me up. He would have made me speak.
I rip the note and find a wastebin. On the way back I notice that desks were huddled together in different groups of five. Each group had people buzzing with caffeine and excitement as they worked, my group had just Sonia and i. How depressing.
I find Chels in her office, doing something that must be fun.
"Can I come in?" I ask.
She looked up, a warm smile on her face.
"Sure. Do you have any questions Sonia could not answer?"
I plop into the seat opposite her.
"Kinda. Is it possible to swap teams? I hear my team does not do anything. And I want to do something. I can't do that in the always behind group."
Chels chuckled.
"Honey, I marked your performance on your test. And I must commend your skills. They are terrific for someone who did not learn it in school."
I don't know if that was a compliment or an insult so I nod.
"So I put you where you belong."
It was an insult. She smiled at me whilst insulting me.
"You put me in the terrible group because I am not as good as those who learnt in Havard and Yale?"
She looked confused for a second and then horrified.
"No, no. No dear, that is not what I meant. I mean. The group needs someone like you. They have failed for too long. They need your zeal, theirs died after their first hundred failures. And most of all, they need your talent."
I must still look unconvinced because she gives me a motherly smile, melting my fears for a bit.
"I group everyone according to their strength. And those other groups flourished because they recognized each other's strength and used it to sharpen their skills. They relied on each other, something I want from your team. Something I know you can do for your team."
Her encouraging smile makes my fears and worries melt away. I felt my energy coming back up. I get to my feet, ready to pull my team out of the mud.
"I have one trick I used when I was still in a team. Study everyone's strength, watch their previous work, find out their strength and weaknesses, then help move your team forward."
I nod in thanks.
"Lisa?"
I turn back to face her motherly smile once more.
"I believe in you. You can do this."
And I do believe her. But first. I need to call a meeting with my team.
