XLVI

XLVI
My eyes keep bulging at Adam, the car he brought for us to ride in was definitely not what he could afford by working part time at a cafe.
He chuckled softly as he watched my face.
"Impressed yet?" He questioned, his eyes didn't leave my face and he had a soft smile on.
I was dumbfounded, what do I say? What were words? If he was living in a mansion house like Noah or in one of those rich estates I wouldn't be this surprised. But he was renting an apartment in that part of town, so yeah, I could openly gawk at him.
He crossed to the car and swung the door open, I wasn't so into cars that I'd cram their models, but it was sleek, the seats were leather and they were still very squeaky, and so was the car's external spray.
"You have a lot of explaining to do young man." I tell him before slipping inside.
Even as I got in, the technology before my eyes glared at me, it was a sleek large screen, with hardly any buttons, instantly I knew it was the latest edition.
Adam sat in the driver's seat, and everything was so natural for him, he clicked his seat belt, before using his finger print to ignite the car. He could never have rented it for this occasion, the boy was stupid rich and somehow he lived in a dingy apartment.
"Are you hungry? Do you want to grab something to eat first?" He asked as he reversed out the parking lot.
I shook my head no, then yes
"Won't the shops close? We need them open remember? It's tonight."
He nodded, his eyes were still on the road so I couldn't read his expression.
"I already called a place. Several places actually, I don't know where you'd find your style. I had them wait."
That forced me to turn to him fully in shock. Rich people could do that?
"It's not a big deal. Where do you want to eat?" He asked as he laughed.
"Mc Donald's." I mumble.
"Very well."
The drive there was quiet, he wasn't driving too fast or too slow, he drove like we had all the time in the world. And we didn't say anything to each other, I was lost in my thoughts as I watched my surroundings outside, it was a blur of colors, and so was my life. My birthday was approaching me with full speed, bringing another year to my life, and I had achieved nothing with myself yet.
The halting of the car distracted me from my thoughts, somewhere between my questions and thoughts, Adam had drove us here and I didn't even realize.
"You back?" Adam teased.
I chuckle and open the car door, the heat was the first to hit me. I had completely forgotten about the heat after moving from air con building to air con car.
When we were inside I just ordered a happy meal, while Adam almost ordered the entire building.
"You really need to spill. Did you catch one of your parents cheating and all of this is bribe?" I ask as a joke.
The smile on his face fell a bit. I froze instantly. I was joking.
He chuckled lightly, "was it that obvious?"
I was about to speak but I was interrupted by our food. We ate in silence, it was awkward, and suddenly I wasn't so hungry anymore. He looked like he was forced to eat pins. I instantly felt horrible, I had no right to come at him like that, it was his personal life, I didn't let him decide to tell me.
Managing to push down everything on my plate, I washed it down with a soda. When I raised my face back up, Adam was staring at my face in amusement. All traces of the sullen Adam disappeared.
"You ate all of that in one bite?"
I decide to go along with him, rolling my eyes playfully at him.
"It's not like I wasn't hungry." I tell him pointedly.
He looked down in front of him, the food that remained wasn't much, just a large fry and his soda. He had eaten everything else.
"Did you wolf down on that?" I asked in pure disbelief. I could have sworn it was heaped up a minute ago.
"It's not like I wasn't hungry." He said mimicking me.
I laughed. And that's how the next fifteen minutes went by, us laughing at each other. I was more than relieved he wasn't sad any more.
"Next stop, dress shopping." He said as the car rumbled as it started.
"You love shopping?" I ask in surprise
He laughed, "yeah, my mom wanted a girl child, she didn't get one so I was forced to do a lot of shopping with her."
I laugh a small laugh,
"Okay Eve, let's go shopping."
It takes a few seconds for the joke to click, but when it does, Adam burst out laughing the entire car ride. I the one who told the joke didn't even find it that funny, but he thought it was so funny he clutched his sides.
I rolled my eyes severally at him, and when I tried to talk more than once, he'd start laughing again. If he wasn't as cute as a child it would have been annoying actually.
We stop at the store, it was obviously for rich people, as I never even heard of the store. And the cars packed outside the store looked like the same price range of Adam's car.
"Wait." He tells me before running out the door, I didn't even have time to be confused as he was by my door in an instant. He pulled it open. Causing me to laugh.
"M'lady." He said feigning an English accent.
I only laughed harder and climbed out of the car. We walk side by side into the building, he looked like he belonged here even when he was wearing a simple t shirt and and plain pants to match. I was looking everywhere at once, the store was so gorgeous and looked so expensive.
"You're going to break your neck at this point." Adam tells me as he watched me in amusement.
"So many clothes!!!" I gushed.
He laughed and opened a door, the cool breeze hit me along with the scent of new clothes.
"Hey Adam." A young girl greeted cheerily.
Telling me he must have been here a lot with his mom. And suddenly I felt self conscious.
"Hey Lyla." He greeted back.
Lyla smiled so wide at him you'd think she didn't see me.
"You came back." She says it dreamily. Like she couldn't believe her eyes.
"Yup. I need something for her." He said holding me by my shoulder and pushing me out for her to see.
Lyla's eyes fell on me and she looked disappointed.
"Adam, who's this?"
I sighed.
He blinked in confusion, not sure what to call me I guess.
"I'm Lisa, Adam's friend."
She looked like she was going to say something but she settled on glaring at me instead.
"For the cocktail party?" Her eyes never left me.
Adam nodded.
"Right. Then follow me." She says before matching away.
I turn to Adam and he was sitting on the sofa they provided for betraying friends like Adam.
"Come on!"
Following her shout I almost run after her.
She flung a few dresses on me immediately I showed up.
"Woah, slow down." I tell her.
She stopped rattling through the clothes and turn to me. Her eyes caked with eye shadow glared at me hotly.
"Why are you with Adam?"
My shoulders sag from the revelation. Of course she liked Adam and thought I was a threat.
"I told you we are friends, now please give me one of those so I can try them on." I say eying one of the dresses she hadn't given me yet. I liked the rich lilac.
She opened her mouth to say something else, but I plucked the dress and walk into the dressing room I saw earlier. I wasn't here to argue.
When I checked in the full length mirror, I knew instantly it was the one. I didn't bother showing Adam, I removed it and wore my old clothes.
"I honestly thought you were going to ask me Adam." I heard Lyla say as I got out.
Their eyes turn to me and Adam looked grateful.
"Where's the dress?" Lyla asked in irritation.
"I already love it, can you pack it for me." I hand it to her. She snatched it and walked away.
"Why didn't you ask her Adam, she seems like she's a peach." I glared at her retreating form, he chuckled lightly.
By the time we got back to the car, we had less than two hours left. I got a strange text on my phone. It read, Jackie Porter.
My heart jumped to my throat.
