The hairs on the back of my arm raised as a shiver ran down my spine. I felt beads of sweat roll down the sides if my face, never mind the air con was on full blast.
"Danielle? What do you mean they were shooting? What happened? Is anybody hurt? Are you Okay?"
She sounds wound up from the other end of the phone. I see Cam perk up from the kitchen counter. Fear and surprise etched into his eye balls.
"Nobody is hurt. None of our guys anyway. I am also fine."
Her voice was shaky as she spoke. Making me grip the phone tighter in my palms.
" Is the police there?"
She cursed under her breath, "No, the police do not even know about this shooting."
"What are you talking about Danielle? How can the police not know?"
Cam signalled for me to put the call on speaker, our guests looked interested in what was going on so I put the call on speaker phone for every one to hear.
"I was going out for a meeting with the guys that does our company merch, when I saw that the van that was parked in front of the company was gone. I wanted to call when I noticed it was parked at the side of the building, I was going to tell them off, when I saw him..." she took in a shaky breath and i felt terror crawl up my throat.
"Him? Who is Him?" Cam asked, completely oblivious to my rising panic.
"The one from the game." Danielle's whisper was one that said she was horrified. I feel Cam's eyes on me, but I was too focused on getting my breathing right to look at him.
"He looked exactly like the one in the game, except more menacing. He shot the guys in the van and walked away like nothing happened."
I choke on my breath. The air refused to enter my lungs so I open my mouth to take huge gulps of air.
"The police should have been alerted by the gun shots." Cam says quickly.
I could almost see Danielle shaking her head furiously.
"No, he used the silencer thing. I saw everything whilst hiding behind a pillar. No body else saw."
"The van is still there?"
"Yes.. should I call an ambulance? The police? Should I check if someone survived?"
"Are you still there?" My voice comes out croaked.
"Yeah.. I can't move." She is crying now.
I hear Cam giving her instructions on what to do but I can't hear the words he is saying. All I can think about is the fact that he was very close to Lisa, too close.
"Lisa..."
I want to call her but Danielle is still on the line. I find Cam's phone and my hands are shaking as I punch in her phone number. My palms are so sweaty I nearly drop the phone a few times.
"Come on, come on pick up." I whisper as I hear it ring.
"Cam?"
"Oh thank God. Lisa, are you Okay? Did anything happen?"
"Kenny?" Her surprise was evident.
"Are you hurt? Where are You?"
"I'm fine, I went to see Adam. Why?"
I felt relieve flood my veins. She was fine, she was not even at the office when it happened. She was okay. He did not get to her.
"Promise me one thing Lisa. You will never be alone. Someone, does not really matter who as long as they can call me and the police."
I could imagine her brows touch in confusion.
"Not until you tell me what is going on."
"Lisa.."
"No. You can't just tell me you want to keep me safe by keeping me at arms length and then make me promise you something like that."
I rub my eyes; they felt hot with exhaustion. I wish I could go back to the simpler times.
"I would never do something to endanger you. Just trust me."
"I have to know what is going on. Something is going on, something dangerous, I can see it in the way Zach hovers above me every single second, I see it in your mom's eyes, your Dad too, Jonathan is always circling the block before he comes In, you don't do that unless you are scared of something. I can't be the only one in the dark here Kenny, not knowing will only put me in more danger."
If she was in front of Me, I know her chest would be heaving after that rant. She must really be frustrated.
"Monsta father?" My chest ached as I say the words. Apart from keeping her safe, I wanted her to never know about my past. The darkness and weakness that constitutes my past, I did not want her to know the weak and helpless Clyde.
She sighed deeply, "What does the game..?"
Then she gasped.
"Monsta father is your birth father.. the story is yours.. oh my God Kenny, I am so sorry."
The pity I did not want. She was giving. I felt exposed and dirty.
"I'm sorry I was an asshole about it when it is your life story to tell. I'm so sorry I put that much pressure on you to tell me."
My lips quirk up in a tired smile. Of course she was not pitying me. She was feeling guilty. I felt my chest ease up a bit, telling her was freeing.
"It's okay. You didn't know."
"So is he like out to get You? He is hunting You?"
I wince at the words but it is exactly what it is, my birth father was hunting me.
"And because I don't want you hurt, I can't keep you close. He has not gone close to mom's place for some reason. So until he is caught, you have to stay there."
"I trust you. I trust your judgement. So do you want me to do anything?"
I smile to myself. She trusts Me, and my judgement.
"Just be safe, be with someone. Call me as soon as you see Him, don't engage, run away as far and as fast as you can."
"Be careful. You are the one dealing with the devil."
"I will. I will return to you safe. I promise."
