I picked up my shoes and my small purse off the floor of the car. As soon as my bare feet touched the dusty asphalt road, the driver took off. Speeding away from me like I wasn't the one with a ruined night and had my expectations back fire.
Trudging towards my apartment building, sighs continued to spill from my lips as an image of Noah's member played in my head like a slideshow.
I had given the driver my general address, not too far from my apartment, but not so close either, just perfect to confuse him and still get home on time. I hoped there was food by the time I got there. I didn't even realize it but I was famished. It was a weekend, Mariana would surely have nothing better to do than cook. That's what she does. On the other hand, she might assume I ate at Noah's, or won't be back so soon. I grunted as that sounded more plausible than anything else. My fingers fished for my phone inside my purse, under different shapes of papers, I found the out dated android phone.
Ignoring the low battery sign, I hadn't plugged it in heaven knows how long. I went on to search for Mariana in my contacts, she saved herself as Bff4l with a ton of kiss face emojis and love emojis.
"Girrrllll." Came her cheerful voice as soon as she accepted the call.
"You are home right?" Skipping the pleasantries as they were a drag.
"Yes of course I am, is something wrong? Was it Karen?" Her voice had grown concerned.
I didn't realize I sounded so down.
"I'm on my way with the full story, did you make something?"
"Yeah, Mac and cheese. I saved you some."
That right there was why she was my best friend for life. I smiled warmly.
"I can see the apartment building now, I'll be right with you." I tell her.
"Ice cream?"
I nod, then answer weakly "yes please" when I realized she couldn't see me.
"Got it." Was all she said before disconnecting the call.
Knowing Mariana, she'd swing into action immediately, I was almost two hundred percent sure she would call the girls for an intervention.
By the time I climbed up the flight of rickety stairs to our apartment, the hunger I felt earlier had almost tripled. I could hear my insides screaming at me to have a bite, before leaving, I dared not to eat anything. And I drank alcohol albeit a tiny quantity on an empty stomach. Talk about stupid decision I make.
The door swung open before my knuckle touched the wooden door, my eyes met Sara's. Her's looked inquisitive, and before she could throw questions at me, I walk inside, ignoring all the extra pair of eyes that stared at me silently. I walked straight to the kitchen counter for the delicious food I could perceive from the stairs.
"Here you go." Mariana perched a plate in front of me. I noticed she added extra cheese, I almost planted a sloppy kiss on her forehead in that moment. Extra cheese was my favorite, but she only gave me on rare occasions since I was lactose intolerant.
I dug into the meal like nothing else mattered, and under five minutes I had cleared the plate. Feeling better, I drink greedily from the plastic water cup.
"Now, fucking spill."
I sighed deeply, and narrated the story up until the part where they introduced everyone from our school with their work place.
"Oh that Karen has gone too far." Mariana seethed.
I waved my hand in dismissal, that went to the farthest back of my mind after Noah. It didn't even bother me anymore.
"A bit into the ceremony, when I was sure I had done enough associating, and had enough of the snobby wedding, and the look of shock Fred kept giving me, I decided it was best for me to leave and get down to the other business of the day, after all we had built enough momentum for it." I took a scoop of the ice cream Mariana put in my hand during the narration.
"And then what? You can't just take a break when you want to." Quinn told me impatiently.
I nod slowly, they had to feel tortured.
"I took a couple of their wines as we left, and drank a bit as we drove away. Either it was the drink or me, but I started to vent to him."
"Oh my fucking god, you scarred him didn't you?"
Oh they didn't know what was about to hit them like a freaking truck.
I took another scoop of the cookie dough ice cream.
"No no no, it didn't even faze him a little bit. I don't think he cared, or even heard me."
"Okay, you've got to stop with the suspense, we are not on a TV show here."
I sniff for effect, then took a scoop of my ice cream again. I heard them curse.
"I got a bit tipsy, we had this intense make out session, it was epic, amazing, and it blew my mind away. What I was anticipating and more." The image of Friday night guy came back to mind, I briefly wondered what was wrong with me before throwing my head back in an attempt, a lousy one at that, to clear his image from my mind.
"I swear to Jesus if you keep this up, I'm taking you to see Jesus today." Mariana threatened calmly.
I swallowed, preparing myself to talk about the disappointment again.
"He asked where we should go to, his place or mine. Obviously I'd pick his place."
They snickered.
"On the drive to his place, I got so confident, again, the booze, not me, I was going to have him right there in his car. Imagine this, I took the reigns, when I was going to have sex with my fantasy."
"Damn, if only." James piped in.
"Shhhh" All of them shushed her.
"And so? How good was sex with a Canadian hottie?"
I let out a throaty, scratchy laugh.
"There was no sex. Well does a hand job count as sex? Anyway, I worked my way to his jeans. Unbuckled his belt and what sprang forth was..."
"A snake?!"
"A fucking sex machine?!"
I didn't anticipate they'd cut me off, but our expectations were the same thing, more or less.
I shook my head in despair.
Mariana's excited look fell apart, she looked like she was going to cry.
"Don't tell me."
I nod.
They shriek.
And I go ahead to scar them with vivid details of my evening.
