Twenty missed calls and about ten thousand text messages from Cam. I rub the sleep away from my eyes as I scan my surroundings, Lisa and i had fallen asleep almost immediately after she made love to me, a smile spreads across my face as i remember our activities from last night.
Her own phone starts singing from the night stand, startling me and waking her, she smiles brightly as she looked at me with sleepy eyes.
"So it was not a dream then."
I shake my head, my own smile threatening to split my face in two.
"Of course not, phones don't appear in dreams." She sighs as she plucks her phone from the night stand.
It had stopped ringing by then.
"Jesus. Twelve missed calls from Cam, how did I sleep through That?"
I frown. I assumed my best friend was calling to tear me a new one about sneaking off, but he did not have to call Lisa.
Scrolling through his texts, I see it is a plethora of CALL ME RIGHT THIS INSTANT. And different variations. That has me worried and i go to call him back, but Lisa was already doing that.
"Oh my goodness, what the hell happened to you? Why haven't you been picking up my calls?"
I wince, he sounds really worried. Not the Cam worried but genuine worry.
" Hey Cam. We were asleep. Slept through all thirty two calls."
Cam let out a colourful string if words, causing Lisa and i to wince physically.
"As long as you are okay. I would tell you about sneaking off but there has been a new development. I figured you needed to hear it from me first."
Lisa glanced at me nervously. I steel myself for anything he was about to say. From his tone I could not say exactly what it could be, it could be anything, ranging from the company to my father.
"Theresa did what she was asked to, she came by few hours after you snuck out, imagine my panic, you are so going to take responsibility for how much I aged in the thirty minutes I panicked."
I felt sheepish and guilty, I could have told him where I was going before I left. I did not, and he worried unnecessarily because of me. I make a mental note to be a better friend to him.
"Anyway, she was here, did her stuff, and got information that Mr. Hansen had killed those guys because they were asked to pull out of the operation by their boss, instead of picking a bone with their boss, he killed them. So the guys in front of your house and the ones stationed in separate places had the idea that since their boss would not kill Mr. Hansen, maybe because of the relationship they had in the past, they would do it themselves."
I take a sharp breath. Cam's voice had turned into a whisper at the end of his sentence.
"Did.. did they do it? Did they kill him?" My voice broke. I don't know why, the man was a criminal and a psychopath.
"They tried."
I don't look at Lisa. Because I don't know how and what I'm feeling.
"What do you mean they tried?"
"They poisoned him with acid or something like that, but he isn't dead. They left him at the roadside while he was taking his last breaths, and people saw him and called an ambulance."
I don't realize I am shaking until Lisa places a hand on top of mine.
"The guys left. The ones stationed in front of the house and everywhere. I'm sorry. I acted as soon as Theresa told me what was planned but it was already done, I could not do anything to stop it."
"Don't be sorry, we should be happy this was how it ended. He is a terrible man at the end of the day."
Cam sighed on the other end of the phone, he sounded so tired, he must have been awake all through the night worrying non stop. I smile slightly.
" And the detective just made a case against him. Turns out the mighty Sebastian Hansen got cocky and touched stuff in the van."
"Can he be charged? He is in the hospital right? Fighting for his life." Lisa asked.
Funny, he was always fighting to take someone else's life and now he was fighting for his.
"Unless he does not make it, if he does make it, he definitely will be charged. Definitely."
"I want to see him."
Lisa turned to me sharply.
"Not a chance." Cam and Lisa say together. In unison for the first time. I would point it out but Lisa looked like messing with her was going to end up terribly for me.
"He is fighting for his life, I have my security, the detective will be there. I just want him to know in case he died that he did not win."
Lisa's eyes soften, and no argument was heard from Cam. Lisa squeezed my hand in understanding.
"Okay, stay right there, security and i are coming to pick you."
"You need to rest you have been up all night." I argue.
"I won't let you go see that animal alone. No argument. Now sit your ass down and wait." He disconnects after that.
"Wow, that was impressive, considering I'm twice his size." I chuckle lightly.
Lisa gets up from the bed and starts to rifle through her clothes.
"What are you looking for?"
"Something to wear to visit my boyfriend's birth father. What do you think screams mess with my man and you will get me hanging on your throat?"
I chuckle and hug her from behind, her petite frame fitting in my huge one perfectly.
"Staying at home."
"Huh?"
"You aren't coming Mimosa. I don't like the idea of him seeing you, he doesn't get to see the most important aspect of my life."
She hesitates before kissing my forehead. Then she smiles at me.
"He can't take any more from you. He has taken all he can. You're bigger than him now, he can't hurt you. Come back to me safe."
