My mom's gasp ricocheted off the walls as though the house were empty, not eerily silent. Her face white as sheets, her eyes moist and full of compassion as she looked at me, as if seeing me for the first time. Her hands shook as she reached out to me, they were warm and familiar on my cheeks, like the day she adopted me.
"I never knew that was what your life was like. I'm so sorry you went through that."
My chest tightens, these people took me in when I had no one. They did not have to but they did, they never treated me as anything less than their son.
"And you made my life better." I say truthfully, my throat was tight with emotions as I say the words.
I had a feeling Sebastian Hansen would try to dissect my brain to find the source of the emotions I felt. I shook my heads to clear the thoughts of him. He did not deserve to live in my head.
"Can I ask you for a favour mom?"
My mom's eyes brighten as she blinked away the tears.
"I need you to keep Lisa safe at home for a while. Whoever was following me that day might have seen her house, I don't want to put her or her friends in danger."
A crease formed on my mom's forehead.
"You guys are free to come anytime, you don't need to ask my permission."
I wince.
"About that, I won't be coming with her."
She looked at me squarely, and dare I say it, an expression of serenity on her face. It made me scared for a second.
"You don't have a choice in the matter. You are coming with me."
"I can't mom. They know my location right now. If I come with you, they will only be ruthless while trying to take me. I can't put you or dad in that kind of danger. I will stay here, but with enhanced security."
Worry clouded her eyes again and her expression goes back to her worrying expression.
"Trust me on this mom. I would never make you worry, that is Jonathan's job."
Mom nodded along while Jonathan huffed.
"Does not make me any less worried that you will be sleeping and eating while those goons are right across the street watching you."
I refuse to think about that, and how creepy it was that people had been watching me living my life.
"Why don't we take this to the cops?"
"You think they will listen to me say I think my father whom I have not had contact with in over ten years is the one doing the killing?"
Mom winced. New York police department was too busy for that.
"So your plan is to lure him down here, subdue him and get the police?"
I nod. I wanted to hand him over to the police with solid evidence that he did the crime, so I never have to bother with him ever.
"Mom! Please don't tell me you are buying into this." Jonathan cried.
"We called you to discourage, not encourage."
Mom nodded and pulled her arms to her side as she paced the living room.
"It is time to make some calls into the police department, you can stay here with your three billion security, but I will be getting the police involved."
I sighed and sank into my sofa, convincing your parents was hard. I don't know how she planned on doing it, but my mom was pretty convincing, so I trusted her.
"I will need your computerized aged version." Mom says as she picked up her phone and started to punch in the digits.
"You know people in the force?" Jonathan asked.
She gave him a strange smile, "How else do you think we kept a track of you?"
Jonathan frowned.
"I will pick up Lisa from work. Get me her clothes." Mom was in her boss mode now, it was hard to disobey her. So when she gives the order that neither Cam or Jonathan are allowed to leave my side at the same time, I think they might have saluted for real.
"What are you working on?" Cam peeked over my shoulder.
We were both in my home office which I almost never used, I have not created a game on my own in almost a year.
"A computerized version of me. I'm incorporating it into a new game and hoping the players would make it to viral enough to weaken whomever is helping him."
"That is a very brilliant idea. I wondered if you planned on handing out fliers with the computerized aged version of you when you said it. But it is a really good idea."
I give him a smile as I continue, digging into the crevices of my mind to remember exactly how his face looked like, and trying to imagine what it looked like now.
Few hours later, I am interrupted by a call from mom saying she had Lisa and that she was on Lisa's side on the argument we had.
"I made dinner. And you have a woman in the house, could you be any much of a bachelor? There was nothing in the pantry or in the fridge."
He dropped a plate of mashed potatoes and chicken. My mouth watered at the sight, I didn't realize how hungry I was until he fixed me a plate.
"Thank you. I will do my grocery shopping soon."
He rolls his eyes.
"No need, I took it upon myself to fill up the pantry and fridge. No need to think me, I did not want to starve if I was staying here a while."
I chuckle before digging in.
"Aren't you eating? This is good."
He grinned. "Of course it is good. It is me we are talking about."
"And Jonathan?"
"He left to go be with Clarissa. We'll switch tomorrow."
"Why? Do you have a date with Zach?"
He blushed beet red.
"Finish your food and continue working." He says this so fast his words pile on each other before dashing out of the room.
By the time I'm done with the computerized aged version of me, I am positive I am staring into the cold, emotionless eyes of Sebastian Hansen.
