XLVIII
I had never attended a cocktail party before, not that I had a reason to be there, all the people I knew didn't have any reason to be at a cocktail party, let alone have a reason to invite me to one. Because let's face it I didn't know anyone that rich, at least not until Adam.
So I didn't know what to expect, therefore I couldn't brace myself enough for what to expect. It was like I didn't think about it before, it started to hit me that I was actually going into uncharted territory. My phone vibrated in my clutch, it was Mariana, she had actually sent a dozen texts earlier, I just hadn't seen any. They were all different variations of her asking how I was, and how it was going. I shot her a quick text asking her not to worry.
"You okay?" Adam asked as the elevator came to a stop.
I gave him an unsure smile, not knowing how to answer that.
"Nervous?"
"What gave it away?" I asked back as I wrung my palms.
He smiled softly before putting his arms around me in a hug. It was such a comfortable hug that I melted into his arms, reminding me once again that he totally would make the perfect elder brother.
Luckily my gown wasn't open, just had little straps to serve as the hand. It flowed to the ground and had a slit running from my thigh to my toes. It was a really beautiful dress. And I was grateful it didn't show my back.
"Feeling better?" He asked into my neck.
It was sad to untangle myself from him but I had to.
"Yeah I am much better. Thank you." I say truthfully.
He gave me his elbow and I took it, the two of us, smiling as we walked into the hall. It was big, and there were people everywhere, but it wasn't rowdy at all. With soft music in the background, It was peaceful actually.
"I'm looking for my mom, I'd like you to meet her." He informed me.
I turned to face him, and oblivious to my concern, he matches into the crowd, trying to find his mom, with me following behind.
The men and women we pass by look rich as fuck, they looked so fancy and if I wasn't dressed like them, I'd have felt like trash compared to them, but just tonight, since I was dressed like them, I dismissed the thoughts of inferiority, for all I knew, they were Cinderellas this evening like me.
We stopped in front of a man and woman that were standing together, they looked young, but not as young as Adam or me. At least they were fifty.
"Adam." The woman greeted. She had a huge smile on her face. Making her look at least five years younger. The most obvious thing about her was the jewelries on her, they were so bright they could blind me.
Adam smiled back,
"Mom "
They shared a hug, similar to the one we had earlier, at the same time it was a different hug.
The man standing with the woman gave Adam a firm handshake, he too smiled with him. The man looked like the older version of Adam, like he spit him out. It was easy to see it was his father.
"I didn't think you'd be here." His father's voice was strong and powerful.
He chuckled,
"I wasn't going to miss it."
And I couldn't help myself as I looked ftom both his mother to the father, trying to figure out who was the lying and cheating one? Who was trying to split the family apart? From where I stood, they looked like the perfect family, so who was trying to ruin it? It was hard to judge from Adam's reaction to both of them, he didn't seem fazed.
"Who's this beautiful young lady?" His mom asked as she looked at me in genuine surprise.
Adam snaked an arm on my waist and dragged me close to him.
"Mom, Dad, this is my friend Lisa. She's my neighbor and friend. Lisa, meet my parents, Mr and Mrs Payne."
I put on my best girl smile, and offer my hand for a handshake.
"Nice to meet you."
His mom was the first to react,
"Pleasure is ours dear." She sounded genuine.
She might not be the cheat, right?
Few seconds later the name registered, they were Payne.
"Adam Payne? As in Payne games???!" I ask in pure shock.
Adam chuckle.
"Yup."
My mouth gape at him, did he have any other secret he kept from me?
"She loves games?" His dad asked in amusement.
"She works at Bavard."
He said it like I was some hotshot there, I was a friggin receptionist.
His mom's eyes widen, and his dad looked impressed.
"We hope to see more of you. Now if you'll excuse us, we have guests we have to attend to." His dad tells me before they walk away.
"When were you planning on telling me that one?!" I ask as soon as they leave.
"It doesn't really matter.. does it? You work at Bavard. That's who they strive to be."
"Yeah, as a fucking receptionist. I could have worked my way up to another level in Payne games if you told me earlier."
"You never asked, and it's weird to say, hey my parents own Payne games."
I curse under my breath.
Payne games couldn't be described as Bavard's competition, because honestly Bavard was the best. Almost internationally. But if I got a job there courtesy of Adam, I was sure I'd get one at Bavard later.
"It's getting stuffy here, wanna go outside for some fresh air?" He offered, dodging my statement.
It was totally understandable he didn't want to tell me about his parents.
We hold hands and step out together. The breeze that caressed my skin was gentle, and I liked it. We start taking a walk, away from the venue.
He stops in front of me suddenly, and when I look up, I see something in his eyes, something raw, too raw and too much for me to handle so I turn to look away. But his hands trap my head, and he lowers his head towards mine, and right before his lips meet mine, I duck.
