Once I got my first car, I made sure all the windows were tinted. Even after buying the second one, third one, fifth one, up to the one I was using currently. I didn't want to risk being seen from the transparent glass windows of my own car.
So when the truck driver and I almost went head to head, my car swerved to the far end of the road, a hair away from the trunk of an oak tree sitting by the road side.
I breathed heavily as I realized what just happened. Thankfully I wasn't hurt, and from the angle I was sitting, the car didn't have a single scratch. I slowly backed out of the almost ditch and into the main street.
The truck driver was out of the car, and a few people had gathered around him. I cursed under my breath, I was hoping the case could be solved quietly amongst ourselves. But with the number of people, it was impossible
The truck had swerved and hit one of the poles for the street lights. The pole was bent over in a way that the head of the light was almost touching the ground. I watched quietly, trying to observe the situation. Finding the perfect time to slip the truck driver my lawyer's card or something.
A man walked up to my car in fury, he was small in stature, and was fat, his cheeks were almost covering his eyes. He was very furious. I knew instantly he was the truck driver. I swore underneath my breath before he got to my car.
His knuckles rapped on the tinted windows rapidly, I lowered the window a bit. His words were mingled together as if he was rapping.
"I'm so sorry sir, it was a complete mistake on my part.." I started to apologize.
His ranting didn't stop, his hands flailed in the air as he described his experience with his hands.
Listening to me was the last thing on on his mind at the moment. The crowd of people started to stroll towards me, probably to give him moral support. The crowd storming towards me had me panicking.
"Sir? Can you please get in the car? Let's talk somewhere more private?" Desperation was already seeping into my voice.
"Get into your car??" He echoed as a question. His expression was downright murderous.
This was not the time, the crowd was about three feet away. I didn't want to be rude to the guy, he had already suffered due to my negligence.
"I am going to call 911 this instant, if you don't come out of your car right now." He threatened.
The crowd had already closed two feet, the gap between us was reducing by the second. I grabbed my cheque book, and signed an blank cheque. Picked up my lawyer's card and pushed them out of the slit hole in the windows and brought the windows up immediately.
I could hear the truck driver's muffled angry screams as I turned the car around and tried to drive away. I felt guilt deep in the pit of my stomach.
An engine roared loudly, catching the attention of everyone there, including mine. Very unsurprisingly, Evangeline jumped out of the car, her hair was all over the place. I cursed at everyone that aligned the timeline so I could meet her.
"YOU DARED TO REJECT ME??! DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO I AM?!" Her screams were unfortunately loud enough for me to hear. I winced, if I wasn't going to be embarrassed today, I was never going to face any form of embarrassment ever again.
I put the car in reverse and sped out of there, I checked via the rear mirror, the truck driver picked up the card and cheque from the ground. Relief flooded my veins as he did, making me to floor the car, taking the fastest route home. I didn't want to see mom right now, or she might force someone else on me again.
It felt so good to be at home after a very long while, sure it was quiet, and the sound of my footsteps echoed throughout the house non stop, but it was just me, my thoughts and I.
I ran a quick bath, trying to get myself to relax, reassuring myself that the truck guy would be settled, and nothing was going to go wrong. I sighed as my butt hit the bed, I found my phone in the back pocket of the pants I wore earlier. Scrolling through my lack of contacts, I found my lawyer's number, and thumbed it.
"You called? By accident?" He mocked me as soon he answered the call.
I snickered openly,
"Believe it or not, there are sometimes I do actually need you."
" Well I'm sure it won't be anything major."
"I may have caused an accident, a truck driver will contact you, please do settle everything you can with him. Doesn't matter how much, just make sure I don't have to appear."
He laughed a little,
"This would be the first time I'm doing what I am being paid to do."
"I'm counting on you Louis." I mentioned before disconnecting the call.
I sighed in content, at least that was taken care of. My head hit the pillow as I recounted what my day was like. One word, terrible. Or two, the worst. Three? The absolute worst. Four? The absolute fucking worst.
My phone rang startling me, my eyes peeled open, making me wonder when I closed them.
"Hello?" My response was clipped, I didn't check the ID of the caller, but I knew only a few people had my contact.
"You ruined the date??" Mom's question threw me off guard.
"Was that what she told you??" I sighed in annoyance remembering the woman named Evangeline.
"I know you didn't want to meet her, but it isn't nice to make a lady cry, haven't I taught you anything Kennedy Russell?"
That statement shoot me right up into a sitting position.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't care what you think, Kennedy, you'll apologize to her on your second date."
