The musty air of the bus and the noise from the other passengers could not distract me from the embarrassment I felt every time I remembered the ordeal from earlier. The event began to replay in my head, I forced myself to listen to the baby that cried in the back seat, the noise from a phone, the guy that sat beside me definitely didn't know anything about headphones, he was blasting his music on speaker while bobbing his head up and down to the song, to be honest I didn't hear what he could enjoy as the song was lost in the background of noise, but I couldn't say anything, it was NYC, there was nothing too weird that happened here.
I finally got to my stop, when I got down the familiar sight welcomed me. What was formerly known as the bus station was now a run down dump, and if it was your first time here, you'd do what I did on my first day here, clutch your bag and walk as fast as you can. But since I was one of them now, I waved them in greeting as I passed.
"Is there anything we'll need at home? I'm beside the store." I sent Mariana a quick text.
I knew she was either on her way home or she was home, our closing time was fifteen minutes apart, but since I had to be the last to leave she came home before me.
"Get milk, the one here stinks." Was her response.
The convenience store was the only one around here, I prayed they had milk or we'd have to use the stinky one.
"Hey CeeCee!" I greeted the old lady that ran the store. She was old but tough, you'd have to be if you wanted your store to survive in a place like this.
Her response was a grunt as she was busy counting her money. Luckily there was milk, I paid for it and left.
"Hey." Mariana greeted as I entered.
I collapsed on the peeling couch beside her, I was very exhausted.
"You look happy, your new position must not have been stressful." I commented.
She snorted.
"It was worse, but I have a reason to be happy."
"Oh yeah? Share." I prod.
"There was this really hot guy I met today.. and unlike someone, I did not let him go." She eyed me pointedly as she talked about the hot guy from Friday.
Two images flashed in my mind's eye at once, two different people's images. One of them was the hot guy from Friday and the other was my Canadian hottie. Although the Friday night guy was way hotter, I stood a better chance with Canadian hottie.
I grunted and face palmed as I managed to remember him again, all my efforts were for naught.
"What?? I haven't even gotten to the best part yet, there are so many hot guys in that department, I could make out with all of them, one each day and not run out of guys."
I blinked to distract myself,
"So did you make out with him?"
She giggled like a high school girl,
"Of course I did, and I couldn't wait to tell you all about it." She squealed excitedly. And because I loved her, her squeal was contagious.
"Okay so, we were both promoted, and had the orientation together. But it was really boring and we sighted each other from across the room, and just like that, lust at first sight!" She had a far away look in her eyes. I chuckle, at least one of us was getting some action.
"We got to second base before we stopped, he didn't measure up." She shook her head sadly. I burst out laughing, when she says a guy didn't measure up, it meant he was small. Smaller than she had anticipated.
"I even reduced the size I usually anticipate, he still did not measure up." She sighed wistfully.
My laughter continued, I rolled out of the peeling couch as I laughed.
"At least you still have a lot of hot guys at your disposal." I offer as I took off the straps of my sandals heels.
I stood up and walked bare footed to my room, I wanted to wear something comfortable before I started to get ready for my job at The roadside junk place.
"Oh, what's this?"
I turned to face her, she was squinting her eyes at a card..
"Noah Tremblay? Where did you get this? The name sounds Canadian."
I threw myself across the tiny room, trying to wrestle with her for the card. For some reason, her grip tightened and she fought back hard. I grunted heavily.
"Gimme."
"It seems too important, I can't let it go now. Tell me who it is."
"Never."
"Ok, fine." I explained every tiny detail to her despite my initial resistance, I could never keep anything from her.
"You have to call him."
I scoff,
"Yeah of course, call him and embarrass yourself. Best advice you can give to your best friend." I tell her while trying to detangle my limbs from hers.
"You already lost one hottie, you aren't losing another one on my watch. Either you call him or I will." Her serious expression was locked in place, I hated when she did that.
"You wouldn't dare."
"Try me." She told me with slitted eyes.
"Well he might be busy.. "
"I will call him right now. I don't kid around."
I took two deep breaths, no body could win with Mariana.
"Gimme the card." I mumbled.
"No funny business." She ordered before she passed it to me.
I put in the digits as slowly as I could, blaming it on my old faulty phone. My palms were clammy, my throat felt like sand paper, it was like I was a high school girl prank calling her crush.
Finally when It rang he didn't take the call. Relief flooded my veins, I almost screamed out loud in pure happiness.
That was until my phone began to ring, the number I had just punched in was calling.
