Chapter 871 The Ugly Side of Human Nature

As soon as Alva heard this, her face turned pale. Taylor looked at Alva in astonishment, her lips trembling, "How dare you treat her like this?"

Alva shrank her neck, very afraid of Taylor's gaze, and said, "Madison spends a lot in the Reynolds family, I was afraid she would run out of money. Besides, I never asked Grace to sacrifice for me. Grace is kind-hearted and filial, wanting to repay me for raising her all these years."

Taylor looked at her evasive manner and understood everything. She trembled with anger, "That's not what you told me before. You said Grace was a selfish and gloomy child, very rebellious, and that she went into the entertainment industry just to become famous. You said she wouldn't give you money for treatment, breaking your hearts."

The more she spoke, the more heartbroken she felt.

Alva bit her lip, "I, I..."

Taylor was utterly disappointed in her and deeply regretted it, "How could I have believed a woman full of lies like you?"

Alva was so ashamed by Taylor's words that she couldn't even look up. She suddenly saw Madison on the hospital bed and seemed to find something to refute her.

She pointed at Madison and said, "I wasn't wrong. Grace is inherently bad. Otherwise, how could she do such a deadly thing? My poor Madison, how could she be so badly hurt?"

Alva threw herself beside the bed, wailing miserably.

Taylor frowned, not fooled by Alva. She recalled Grace's usual behavior; Grace was definitely not a cruel and selfish child.

Especially when she slapped Grace just now, the shock and sadness in Grace's eyes lingered in her mind.

A weak cough came from the hospital bed. Alva's wailing stopped immediately. She looked at Madison, anxiously touching her arm and face.

If Madison weren't lying down and unable to move, she would have avoided it. The fishy smell on Alva's hands made her nauseous.

"Where am I?"

"Madison, you're awake. You scared me to death. How could you fall so badly?" Alva wiped her tears in distress, "Does it hurt anywhere?"

Madison's gaze bypassed Alva and looked at Taylor, reaching out to her, "Mom, don't be angry. Grace didn't push me down the stairs on purpose. It was an accident. Don't blame her."

Taylor quickly walked to the bedside and held her hand, "You just woke up, don't talk about this."

Madison forced a smile, "I know you love me and will definitely blame Grace."

Theodore frowned at her, coldly interrupting, "Did Grace accidentally push you, or did you fall down the stairs yourself?"

Madison's pupils contracted, but she was sure no one noticed her pushing Grace, and the house's surveillance couldn't capture it.

She immediately became confident, "Theodore, what do you mean by that? Ever since you found out I was the swapped sister, you've held a deep prejudice against me. I don't blame you, but we've grown up together. You know what kind of person I am. If defending Grace and falsely accusing me makes you feel better, go ahead."

Theodore said, "You don't need to act in front of me. What's wrong is wrong. Mom, I have something to take care of. I'll be leaving now."

He didn't want to stay here and watch Madison pretend.

Taylor called him, but seeing him leave without looking back, she looked at Madison and said, "Madison, you rest well. I'll go talk to Theodore."

She let go of Madison's hand and quickly chased after him.

Theodore stood in front of the elevator, taking out his phone to call Phoebe. Hearing Taylor's voice behind him, he put his hand down.

Taylor ran to him, out of breath, "Theodore, Madison just woke up. How could you talk to her like that? Won't it make her sad?"

Theodore looked at Taylor's confused expression and took a deep breath, "Mom, if she were really sad, she wouldn't have done such a thing."

"You suspect she fell down herself to frame Grace?" Taylor shook her head, "No way, she's so afraid of pain. How could she do that?"

The Madison she raised couldn't be that malicious.

Theodore coldly curled his lips, "Yes, she's so afraid of pain. She must have wanted someone else to fall, not herself."

"You mean..." Taylor looked at Theodore in shock, hardly believing it, "No, Theodore, Madison isn't that bad."

"She wasn't before, but that doesn't mean she isn't now," Theodore paused, "Mom, three years ago when we brought Grace back, I told you that having them live under the same roof would eventually lead to trouble. You didn't believe me. Now Madison just fell down the stairs. Next time, one of them might die."

"Don't scare me." Taylor's face turned pale.

Theodore said, "If you don't want this to happen, let Madison move out. Her biological parents are habitual liars. To let her enjoy wealth, they swapped two children. Their greedy nature is inherited by Madison. Before, no one competed with her. Now there's a threat, she'll become worse, beyond your imagination."

Taylor was stunned, "Theodore, don't make it sound so scary. Madison won't become that bad."

Seeing Taylor not listening, Theodore didn't say more, "If you insist, you'll eventually see the darker side of human nature."

Theodore returned to Lakeview Estates. He parked the car outside the villa but didn't get out immediately. He rolled down the window and lit a cigarette.

Halfway through the cigarette, he heard the door open from inside. He turned to see a tall, slender figure walking over in the dim light.

Phoebe walked to the driver's side and took the cigarette from his fingers, "Your arm is still injured; why are you smoking again?"

Theodore leaned on the steering wheel, quietly watching her.

Phoebe felt uncomfortable under his focused gaze and covered his eyes with her hand. He mischievously blinked.

His eyelashes brushed against her palm like little fans, making her pull back her hand, "Do you have something on your mind? How's Madison?"

"Not seriously injured," Theodore said lightly.

Phoebe said, "That's good. Did Grace really push her down the stairs?"

"Do you believe that?" Theodore asked her.

Phoebe looked at his expression, pondering for a moment before speaking, "Honestly, I think it's more likely Madison pushed Grace. Do you remember three years ago when she hit Grace and ran?"

Theodore's eyes darkened, remembering that incident. He hadn't believed Phoebe then, but now her words were confirmed.
