Chapter 888 Even the Smartest People Are the Same

Dax couldn't believe his son had the nerve to mouth off in front of Theodore and his crew. Did the kid even know who he was messing with?

Theodore was the kingpin of the Kedora financial world. Dax, just a deputy bank manager, knew Theodore could squash him like a bug.

Fuming, Dax slapped his son hard. The boy hit the ground, stunned for a moment before bursting into tears.

Phoebe couldn't stand the sound of a kid crying. She was about to go over and check on him when Theodore grabbed her wrist.

"Theodore..." Phoebe looked up at Theodore's stern face.

Theodore said calmly, "It's their kid to discipline. We shouldn't get involved."

Dax saw his son's mouth bleeding and his cheek swelling up. He knew he had hit too hard and felt a pang of regret.

Hearing Theodore's words, Dax's face stiffened. Ignoring his crying son, he quickly forced a smile and said, "Mr. Reynolds, it's our fault for not disciplining him properly. How's your son? He fell from such a height. Should we take him to the hospital to make sure he's okay?"

Theodore looked at him coldly. "Sounds like you're hoping he got hurt."

"No, no, no, that's not what I meant. I'm just worried about your son," Dax said, trembling.

Theodore didn't want to waste any more words, especially with the kid's crying giving him a headache. He frowned and said, "We've received your apology. Dax, you can leave now."

Dax forced a smile. "About my job, Mr. Reynolds, could you..."

Theodore cut him off coldly. "Dax, if you can't even discipline your son, how can we trust you with important responsibilities?"

Dax was so scared he fell to his knees, pleading, "Mr. Reynolds, it's my fault for not managing my family well. I promise to set things right. Please give me another chance."

Nia, seeing Dax sweating bullets, knelt as well. "Ms. Ziegler, our whole family depends on my husband's modest income. If he loses his job, we won't survive. We'll discipline our child better and make sure he never hurts another kid again. Please, speak to Mr. Reynolds for us."

Phoebe pressed her lips together. She knew Theodore wanted to stand up for Boris and didn't want to play the good cop. She said, "Instead of begging me now, you should focus on teaching your child. He's only four. If you teach him kindness, he'll learn kindness. If you teach him arrogance, he'll learn arrogance."

Nia's tears started to fall. "I understand. I'll teach him to be kind from now on."

Phoebe shook her head, thinking of the unreasonable old man from last night. The problem didn't lie with the parents.

But she didn't want to say more. "I agree with Mr. Reynolds. You're asking the wrong person."

Nia realized she needed to plead with Theodore, but he was a man who wouldn't change his mind. In the end, they couldn't sway him and were escorted out by KeithLouis.

Ruby returned just as the three were being led out. She walked into the villa, sensing the tense atmosphere.

"Was that the kid who pushed Boris off the slide last night?" Ruby had heard about it from Evelyn that morning and had been worried about the bump on Boris's head.

Evelyn, who had taken the kids away earlier, came out of the room. "That family always lets their kid bully others. They've never apologized before. Now that they've met Theodore, they regret it. Too late."

Ruby looked at Phoebe. "Phoebe, don't go soft. Some people need a lesson, or they'll keep causing trouble."

"I know." Phoebe nodded and called Boris over. "Boris, come here."

Boris ran over, and Phoebe picked him up. The bump on his forehead had gone down a bit, but the skin was still bruised.

She blew on it and asked, "Does it still hurt?"

Boris touched his forehead and smiled brightly. "It doesn't hurt anymore."

"Silly boy, go play." She put him down and turned to Theodore. "Theodore, thank you for today."

Theodore frowned. "Thank me for what?"

"Thank you for standing up for Boris. If it weren't for you, they might not have apologized." Phoebe said sincerely.

Theodore replied indifferently, "As long as you don't think I'm meddling."

"Don't be silly. When have I ever thought you were meddling?" Phoebe felt Theodore had been moody lately, but she couldn't figure out why.

Theodore stared at her for a moment before heading upstairs.

Phoebe felt uneasy under his gaze. She played with the kids for a while but couldn't shake the discomfort.

Ruby sat next to her and whispered, "Did you and Mr. Reynolds fight? He seems upset these past few days."

Phoebe was confused. "No, everything's fine."

"Fine?" Ruby pressed.

Phoebe suddenly felt unsure. They had been awkward since yesterday, ever since Vanessa embarrassed her in Suncrest City.

He had done so much behind her back, and she hadn't told him anything.

Ruby saw her hesitation and patted her shoulder. "Men can be prideful. Even someone as smart as Mr. Reynolds."

Phoebe looked at her, puzzled. "We're fine."

"Then why did he leave your room last night? Think about it, Phoebe." Ruby stood up to leave, but was stopped by Phoebe.

"Ruby, what has Donovan been up to lately?" Phoebe asked quietly.

Ruby shook her head. "I don't know. He doesn't tell me anything."

Ruby wasn't lying. Donovan had been acting more secretive, spending most of his time locked in his study.

Phoebe pressed her lips together. She hadn't seen Donovan in a while, even though they lived in the same neighborhood. "I'll visit him after dinner. Let him know."

"Okay."

After dinner, Phoebe avoided Evelyn and quietly went to Donovan's house. Trevor opened the door and welcomed her in. "Ms. Ziegler, Mr. Donovan is in his study."

Phoebe went upstairs to the study. Donovan was standing by the window. Hearing her footsteps, he turned around. "Phoebe, what brings you here?"
