Chapter 948 Paternity Test
Theodore pressed his lips together, worried that being too eager might raise suspicion. "Thanks, I'll tell them a bedtime story in a bit."
"Theodore, I wanna hear Little Red Riding Hood," Noomi quickly requested, excited at the mention of a bedtime story.
She was wearing a red hood today and wanted to hear the story again.
Boris frowned, "Little Red Riding Hood is lame. I don't wanna hear it. Hubert, let's hear a Spider-Man story."
At this age, boys and girls had different tastes.
Theodore rubbed his temples. "How about we let Phoebe decide later? She can choose between Little Red Riding Hood and a story about tanks. Sound good?"
"Okay."
With that, the issue was postponed.
Evelyn and Pamela took Hubert, Boris, and Noomi upstairs to get ready for bed.
Even in winter, with the heating on, Hubert, Boris, and Noomi took baths every day.
After their baths, Evelyn helped them into their pajamas, dried their hair, and tucked them into bed to wait for Phoebe.
Phoebe was in a meeting and too busy to join them.
Theodore entered the room with two books: one about Little Red Riding Hood and the other about Spider-Man.
After the bedtime stories, Hubert, Boris, and Noomi were fast asleep.
Theodore gently placed the books on the nightstand and looked at Hubert, who was closest to him.
His fingers twitched slightly.
Taylor had once mentioned that the more she looked at Hubert, Boris, and Noomi, the more they resembled him.
At the time, he didn't dare think too much about it, fearing he was being overly sentimental.
But now, looking at their sleeping faces, he saw a resemblance, especially in their eyes and straight noses.
If they were truly his children, it would be wonderful.
Ever since he suspected Phoebe might be the woman who had been in his room that night, his emotions had been in turmoil.
He was desperate to know the truth, but obstacles kept getting in his way, making it difficult to even get a strand of hair.
Now, with Hubert, Boris, and Noomi sound asleep, he couldn't miss this rare opportunity.
He leaned in, slowly extended his hand, and gently plucked a hair from Hubert's head.
He quickly placed it in a sterile, sealed bag he had prepared.
He put the bag in his suit pocket, sighed in relief, tucked the kids in, and left the room.
In the dim room, Boris opened his eyes.
Hearing the door close, he sat up, looked at the deeply sleeping Hubert, and lay back down.
He touched his head, wondering why Theodore had only taken a hair from Hubert and not from him or Noomi.
Theodore had just closed the door when someone tapped his shoulder.
Already feeling guilty, he nearly jumped out of his skin.
He turned to see Phoebe yawning in front of him. "Did they just fall asleep?"
Theodore exhaled in relief and pulled her into a hug. "Hubert, Boris, and Noomi are all asleep. How about you sleep in my room tonight?"
Phoebe glanced at him and said, "No, I have a party tomorrow night and need to wear a gown."
Theodore wanted to say more, but Phoebe slipped out of his arms, entered the room, and said before closing the door, "You did a great job with the kids today. Get some rest."
Without waiting for his response, she shut the door.
Theodore was left standing there, rubbing his nose and feeling the hair sample in his pocket. He turned and went back to his room.
Once the paternity test results were in, he would confront her.
He remembered her saying that Hubert, Boris, and Noomi were fathered by a male model. He was eager to see how she would explain herself.
Theodore was convinced that Phoebe knew he was the man from that night and that Hubert, Boris, and Noomi were his children.
Otherwise, she wouldn't have hidden their existence from him, fearing he would fight for custody.
Unable to contain his excitement, he tossed and turned all night.
The next day, he went to the office and handed the hair samples to Lawton.
"Find a reliable lab and make sure no one knows about this paternity test. Got it?" Theodore said sternly.
Lawton nodded. "Yes, I'll personally oversee the results to ensure there's no tampering."
"Good, go ahead." Theodore waved him off, watching Lawton leave the office.
He rubbed his hands together, unable to calm down.
He picked up his phone and made a call. "Got time? Let's play some basketball."
After hanging up, Theodore went to the break room, grabbed his long-unused gym bag, packed his gear, and left the office.
He needed to burn off his excess energy, and running around the court was the best way to do it.
At the private basketball court, it was just Theodore and Patrick, sweating it out.
Patrick's assistant kept score on the sidelines.
Before long, Theodore was far ahead, leaving Patrick in the dust.
He made a three-pointer and, seeing Patrick panting, said, "You're out of shape. We've barely started, and you're already winded."
Patrick, hands on his knees, wiped the sweat from his forehead and looked at Theodore's agile figure. "Did you take something? You're way too hyped."
Theodore easily made another three-pointer, landing smoothly. "It's not me; you're just too weak."
Patrick, feeling defeated, lay down on the court. "I can't keep up. I need a break."
Theodore was surprised at how quickly Patrick gave up. He dribbled over and nudged Patrick's leg. "Come on, get up and play a few more rounds."
"Nope." Patrick covered his eyes with his arm, blocking the bright lights.
The sound of the basketball bouncing brought back memories of high school.
He and Theodore had known each other since they were kids and had always been in the same class.
In high school, they often skipped class to play basketball.
But Theodore was a force to be reckoned with. Even when he skipped class, his grades never suffered.
He was always top of the class, while Patrick, no matter how hard he tried, was always second.
Patrick had never been jealous of Theodore.
He always bet that he would surpass him in the next exam, but he never did.
After failing so many times, he became numb. What did it matter if he was second?
Theodore sat next to him, dribbling the ball. "I heard you're going on a dating show. Didn't you say you'd never do reality TV?"
