Chapter 891 Falling Out and Becoming Enemies
Phoebe's eyes darted away awkwardly when she heard Edward's words. "Edward, bringing up the past now is pointless. We had a mutual breakup..."
"Mutual breakup?" Edward stared at her, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Do you think I wanted to break up, or was it just me being petty? Phoebe, you can't be that clueless."
"Edward..."
Edward's eyes finally showed a hint of resentment. He let out a bitter laugh. "I thought you understood me after twenty years together. When I mentioned breaking up, I was waiting for you to come and make things right. But instead, you quickly ran into Theodore's arms. I even wondered if you were just waiting for me to break up with you so you could be with him."
"Edward!" Phoebe's voice turned cold. "Whether you believe me or not, I never did anything to betray you. But you, can you honestly say you never schemed against me?"
Edward's pupils contracted. They stared at each other for a long moment before he suddenly laughed—a laugh that sent chills down Phoebe's spine. It was as if he had finally dropped the pretense of being a good person.
Edward pressed his hand to his forehead and laughed for a while. "Phoebe, you've been wanting to confront me, haven't you?"
Phoebe pursed her lips, suddenly feeling that the man in front of her was a stranger, no longer the Edward she once knew.
Edward shrugged, looking indifferent. "See, it's better to lay it all out. Saves me the trouble of pretending."
"You..."
"Yes, I schemed against you, Phoebe. We grew up together; no one knows you better than I do. On the day of the reunion, I knew there was a drug in the juice, but I still watched you drink it."
Phoebe's mind buzzed. She looked at Edward in disbelief. "Why?"
"Why? Because I was jealous. Especially knowing you were pregnant with Theodore's child. Did you think I didn't care? I dreamed of making that child disappear. Luckily, I didn't have to do it myself; someone else took care of it."
Phoebe was deeply shocked, her eyes wide. Edward seemed like a venomous snake, terrifying to the extreme.
She trembled as she spoke. "I never imagined..."
"How could you not imagine? You just didn't want to think about it. That night, I could have taken you home, but I chose to take you to a hotel. Do you think it was a coincidence that Theodore found us?"
Seeing Phoebe's devastated expression, Edward felt a bitter satisfaction. He no longer wanted to hide the truth.
He wasn't a good person; he was a genuine scoundrel.
If she could hate him, it would be worth it. Better than being just a passerby in her life.
Phoebe closed her eyes. "I never thought you started scheming against me so long ago, Edward. We grew up together. I thought, even if we couldn't be a couple, we could be like family."
"Who wants to be family with you?" Edward sneered. "Phoebe, you're too naive. If we can't be a couple, then we can only be enemies."
Phoebe's eyes stung. Her hand clenched into a fist. She took a deep breath, feeling a tightness in her chest. "So, did you have a hand in Donovan's accident in Starfall City?"
"Yeah!" Edward admitted without hesitation. "Nova was arrogant and jealous of Donovan's talent, afraid he would surpass him. So he sent Donovan to Starfall City, calling it a promotion but really to keep him away from the center of power."
"One night, Nova got drunk and told me he wanted Donovan to stay in Starfall City forever. I just gave him a little nudge, and he did it. I planned to push you to the brink so you'd come to me for help. But I underestimated Theodore. Despite hating you for the miscarriage, he still went to Starfall City to help you."
Phoebe felt a deep pain in her heart. "Edward, if you hate me, you can take it out on me. Why hurt innocent people?"
"Because I couldn't bear to hurt you," Edward said sorrowfully. "Phoebe, you were so cruel to me, but I still couldn't bring myself to harm you."
Phoebe bit her lower lip, looking at him as if he were a stranger.
"Edward, are you still the Edward I knew?" His scheming was so deep, and she had never suspected him.
Even when the child was lost, she never doubted him. But he had been plotting all along.
Edward gave a bleak smile. "I wouldn't have gone this far if it weren't for Theodore. He caught us in bed, the child was lost, and he still managed to endure that humiliation and refused to let go. I underestimated his determination."
Phoebe stood up abruptly. "Edward, you've disappointed me so much. Why? Why did you do this?"
Edward looked up at her, laughing maniacally. "Because I love you, Phoebe. If Theodore had divorced you back then, none of this would have happened."
Phoebe gritted her teeth. "Even if we had divorced, I would never have been with you."
Edward's pupils contracted. He slammed his fist on the glass table, causing it to crack like a snowflake.
"Phoebe, why can Theodore have you, but I can't?"
Phoebe understood his meaning. She had once said she would never love someone she had already missed. Yet now, she had let Theodore back into her life.
She said, "Because he wouldn't scheme against me."
Edward laughed as if he had heard something ridiculous. He laughed until tears rolled down his face. He wiped them away. "He didn't scheme against you? Phoebe, are you naive, or am I?"
Phoebe remained silent.
Edward continued, "If he didn't scheme against you, why did he swoop in so quickly after we broke up?"
Phoebe was speechless.
They stared at each other in silence for a long time before Edward spoke again. "Enough. We've known each other for nearly thirty years. Pointing fingers now is pointless."
Phoebe stayed silent.
Edward looked at her. "I came here to ask you one thing. Is Donovan still alive?"
Phoebe's pupils tightened as she stared at Edward. He saw her expression and knew the answer. "No wonder. He's really lucky."
Phoebe finally found her voice. "Did you tamper with Donovan's car?"
Edward looked at her for a long time before giving a sorrowful laugh. "I did scheme against you, but I never intended to kill you. Phoebe, thinking that of me hurts."
"Edward, don't play the victim. Since you've dropped the pretense, let's cut ties completely. From now on, we're strangers!" Phoebe declared firmly.
