Chapter 905 You Get in Here
Ruby had tried multiple times to warn Donovan, but Evelyn's hawk-like vigilance left her no chance.
As they stepped out of the house, Evelyn asked, "Which way?"
Ruby kept her head down, silent. Evelyn's sudden realization that Donovan was still alive had caught them all off guard. If she knew Donovan was in this neighborhood, she might just explode.
"Mom, please don't be mad. We didn't mean to keep this from you," Ruby pleaded.
Evelyn snorted, "Oh, so now you're trying to threaten me? If I get mad, you won't take me to see him, is that it?"
"I wouldn't dare," Ruby replied. "I'm just worried about your health. Please stay calm, don't get angry, please."
Evelyn glared at her, "Enough with the nonsense. Take me to him, now."
Ruby took a deep breath and led her in the opposite direction of the exit. Evelyn frowned, "Why are you going this way? The main gate is over there."
Ruby remained silent.
Evelyn glared at her, "Don't think you can stall by walking me around the neighborhood. If I don't see Donovan today, I'm not going back."
Ruby didn't know what to say. She led Evelyn around a corner and pointed to a villa ahead, "Donovan's house is there."
Evelyn's eyes widened like saucers, "What did you say?"
Ruby, feeling guilty, couldn't meet Evelyn's eyes. She lowered her head and whispered, "Donovan lives here, Mom. He's been right by your side all along."
Evelyn was furious. She shot Ruby a fierce look and marched towards the villa.
Ruby hurried to catch up.
Evelyn reached the door and pressed the doorbell. The urgent ringing sounded like a death knell. Trevor saw the angry woman on the intercom and became nervous.
He recognized Evelyn immediately. Slapping his thigh, he turned and ran upstairs.
"Mr. Donovan Ziegler, Mr. Donovan Ziegler, it's bad! Mrs. Evelyn Ziegler is here!" Trevor was terrified, sweating profusely.
Donovan heard the doorbell from upstairs. He calmly stood up, "Trevor, calm down. I'll find a place to hide. You go and send my mom away."
Trevor asked, "You're not going to see Mrs. Ziegler?"
"Not now," Donovan replied. He didn't know why Evelyn had suddenly come, but he couldn't face her yet.
Evelyn waited outside for a while, but no one answered. She started banging on the iron gate, shouting, "Donovan, get out here! Don't make me come in and drag you out, or you'll regret it!"
Ruby broke into a cold sweat, "Mom, Mom, let's go back."
"Shut up!" Evelyn glared at her, banging on the gate and cursing. Trevor was at a loss, "Mr. Donovan Ziegler, Mrs. Evelyn Ziegler is here for you. You can't hide forever. You should just see her."
Donovan stood by the window, peeking through the curtains. Seeing Evelyn at the door, he closed his eyes.
After years of ups and downs, he had never feared anything. But now, he was afraid to face Evelyn.
He knew her well. Knowing he was alive, she wouldn't let it go. If he didn't want to attract the neighbors' attention and reveal his address, he had to go out.
The more he hid, the angrier Evelyn would get, and the consequences would be uncontrollable.
He gritted his teeth and headed downstairs.
Donovan walked out of the villa, hearing the banging. He braced himself and opened the door.
Evelyn was banging on the door, fuming. Suddenly, the iron gate was pulled open from inside, and she swung her hand at the person.
Donovan saw the slap coming but couldn't dodge in time. Evelyn couldn't retract her hand due to the momentum.
In a split second, Ruby moved so fast that no one saw how she did it. She was already in front of Donovan.
The slap landed on Ruby's face, and the surroundings fell silent.
Phoebe and Theodore, who had just arrived, stopped abruptly, witnessing the scene. Phoebe rubbed her forehead, murmuring, "We were a step too late."
Donovan frowned. He hadn't expected Ruby to take the slap for him. He grabbed her shoulder and pulled her aside.
"Are you nuts? When you see a slap coming, you should dodge. Why did you step in?"
Ruby's face was numb with pain. She gently covered her cheek, wincing, "I-I just reacted instinctively."
Seeing Evelyn's slap about to hit Donovan, she didn't have time to think and stepped in. She felt like she was faster than a superhero at that moment.
Evelyn's hand was still in the air. She stared at Donovan, stunned. Having experienced Harper's resurrection, she was shocked but could accept seeing Donovan alive.
"You're alive?" Evelyn's voice was soft, afraid to shatter the moment, cautiously looking at him.
Donovan looked down at Evelyn and sighed, "Mom, I'm alive."
Evelyn's trembling hands cupped his face, confirming the warmth of his skin. This wasn't a hallucination or a dream. Donovan was real, truly alive.
Realizing he was alive, Evelyn's anger surged. He had been alive all this time, yet hadn't contacted her for three years.
She suddenly pinched his face hard. Donovan let out a restrained cry of pain, slowly rising in pitch.
Phoebe, standing nearby, shrank back, feeling the pain. Evelyn's pinching was ruthless.
When she had hidden in Canada, Evelyn had gone there alone to find her. Seeing Hubert, Boris, and Noomi at home, she had punished them similarly.
"My mom used to punish us like this. The pain was secondary; the marks on our faces lasted for days, and we were laughed at at school," Phoebe recalled, shuddering.
Theodore smirked, "You deserved it."
Hubert, Boris, Noomi, and Ethan squinted, looking fearful. Boris said, "Grandma's anger is scary."
"She's practically on fire," Hubert said, frightened.
Ethan looked worriedly at Ruby, "Mom must be in pain now."
"Of course. When Grandma spanks me, it hurts for a long time," Noomi said, rubbing her bottom.
The four kids sighed simultaneously. They were at the bottom of the food chain, helpless.
Evelyn finally let go, pushing Donovan aside and striding into the villa, "Get inside!"
