Chapter 908 Your Good Luck Is Yet to Come
Ruby lowered her head, looking embarrassed as if her thoughts had been exposed. "Mom, I messed up before and hurt him. He's still mad at me. I want to do everything I can to make it right and hope he'll forgive me for my past mistakes."
Evelyn didn't delve into the grievances between them. She had observed Ruby over this period and found her to be kind, honest, and reliable.
Maybe the past couple of years had smoothed out her rough edges, making her more pleasant to be around, without the previous arrogance and willfulness.
"Ruby, men can be opportunistic creatures. The more you put yourself down, the less they'll see your worth. Sometimes, you need to stand your ground. So what if you made mistakes? We're not perfect; everyone makes mistakes," Evelyn said.
Ruby hesitated, "But... I made a big mistake. I once..."
"Let's not dwell on the past. Tell me, now that Donovan is back, do you still want to be with him?" Evelyn asked seriously.
Ruby stared at her, unsure of her meaning, and stammered, "Of course I do, but I'm afraid he doesn't."
"He wouldn't dare!" Evelyn said, slapping the table in excitement before calming down. "With me here, I won't let him act out. Ruby, tomorrow you and Ethan will move to Donovan's place."
Ruby was stunned. "Mom, are you kicking Ethan and me out?"
Evelyn saw her teary expression and patted her hand, "I'm not kicking you out. I'm sending you to reunite with Donovan."
Ruby's eyelashes fluttered. "But Ethan is happy living with Hubert, Boris, and Noomi. I don't want to leave you all."
"Silly child, you and Ethan's future depends on Donovan," Evelyn said earnestly. "Besides, I'm worried about Donovan."
Ruby looked up at Evelyn, seeing her worried expression. "Mom, are you worried Donovan will lose himself in hatred?"
"You catch on quickly," Evelyn sighed. "I've lived most of my life, and my only wish is for you all to be safe and sound. Revenge isn't as important as family unity."
"Mom..."
Evelyn looked down at the floor. "You're still young. When you reach my age, you'll understand how hard it is to find peace and happiness."
Ruby's eyes welled up, and she sniffled, "Mom, I'll watch over him and make sure he doesn't lose his way."
Evelyn nodded with relief, "Good, I'm counting on you. Tomorrow morning, I'll help you move your things to Donovan's place. You must keep an eye on him and prevent him from doing anything he'll regret."
"I won't let you down," Ruby said, patting her chest. "Don't worry, Donovan knows his limits."
"Let's hope so," Evelyn waved her hand. "It's late. Go rest. Remember to use a cold compress on your face. Don't get too close next time; he won't break."
"Okay." Ruby got up and walked to the door. As she opened it, she glanced back at Evelyn, who was lost in thought, then turned and left.
Upstairs, Phoebe's door was open, and she peeked out, lowering her voice, "How's Mom's mood?"
Ruby replied, "She's calm."
Phoebe nodded, "That's good. I won't bother her now. Donovan used to cause trouble, and I'd get the blame."
She was about to retreat into her room when Ruby called out, "Wait."
Phoebe poked her head out again, looking puzzled. "What's up?"
Ruby hesitated, "Mom wants Ethan and me to move to Donovan's place to keep an eye on him and prevent him from doing anything foolish."
"That's great news," Phoebe said, patting her shoulder. "Mom's smart. With you and Ethan there, Donovan won't be alone and won't act out. Ruby, it's tough on you."
Ruby blushed, "You're something else."
Phoebe made a funny face, "Ruby, good things are coming your way. I'm off to bed. I'll see you off tomorrow."
Ruby stood in the hallway, watching Phoebe's door close. She sighed and went into her room. Ethan sat up in bed when he heard her.
"Mom."
Ethan's voice was anxious in the dark. Ruby walked over and turned on the bedside lamp, seeing Ethan sitting cross-legged on the bed. She sat beside him, "What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
Ethan shook his head, "I couldn't sleep. Mom, is he my dad?"
Ruby looked into Ethan's eyes, so much like Donovan's, and nodded, "Yes, he's your dad. We're moving in with him tomorrow. Are you happy?"
Ethan didn't look happy. He played with his fingers, "But I don't want to leave Hubert, Boris, and Noomi. Mom, I don't want to live with him."
Children are sensitive. Tonight, Ethan could tell Donovan didn't like Ruby; he even yelled at her.
Ruby pulled him onto her lap. "Why, Ethan? Don't you like your dad?"
Ethan looked down, glancing at Ruby quickly, "Mom, does he not like me?"
"Of course not," Ruby said, tickling his chin. "You're so well-behaved. Dad will like you."
"But he was mean to you. I don't want to like him," Ethan said angrily. Ruby was the best person in the world, but Donovan didn't like her.
Ruby was worried that Ethan would have a negative view of Donovan. She quickly explained, "Dad wasn't mean to me. He was just in a bad mood. Ethan, don't misunderstand him."
Ethan stayed silent.
Ruby patted his shoulder, "Alright, Ethan, go to sleep. We have to get up early to pack tomorrow. I'll sleep with you."
Ruby thought the matter was settled, but in the middle of the night, Ethan started crying for no reason. She got up to comfort him, but he wouldn't stop. His cries grew louder, waking everyone in the house.
Phoebe rubbed her eyes, hearing the crying from the next room. She quickly put on a coat and got out of bed. Theodore propped himself up. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to check on them. You go back to sleep."
Phoebe hurried out, closing the door behind her, and the crying faded.
Phoebe knocked on the door before entering, seeing Ruby standing by the bed and Ethan crying with a red face.
"What's wrong, Ethan? Are you feeling sick?"
Ruby saw her and felt relieved, "Please help me calm him down. He woke up and stubbornly said he doesn't want to move. He wants to stay here."
Phoebe smiled, "That's a good thing. Ethan wants to stay, which means he likes me, right?"
