Chapter 896 Madison Investigates Phoebe
Madison left the hospital room, leaning against the wall as she slowly made her way back to her room. All the while, she was plotting how to get rid of Phoebe for good.
She needed to marry Edward. If Phoebe and Theodore got back together, they would constantly be in each other's lives, and Madison would never be able to win Edward's heart.
The only way was to break up Phoebe and Theodore, so Phoebe wouldn't keep appearing in front of them and shaking Edward's resolve.
Back in her room, Madison called a private investigator she knew well and asked him to look into what happened to Phoebe after she left the Reynolds family three years ago.
It wasn't easy to investigate something that happened so long ago.
In just a couple of days, the private investigator reported back to Madison about Phoebe's whereabouts three years ago. "After Ms. Ziegler and Mr. Reynolds divorced, she applied for jobs everywhere and eventually got hired by a media company. She worked there until she left Kedora."
Madison listened to the report while reading the email. There wasn't a single flaw. Phoebe hadn't been involved with anyone. So, how did she have that child?
"Go to that media company and see if anyone remembers Phoebe. See if you can find any useful information," Madison insisted.
"Yes, ma'am."
After hanging up, Madison carefully reviewed the investigation report again. It was flawless.
After the divorce, Phoebe went to work at the media company and had no relationships during that time. Based on the birth dates of Hubert, Boris, and Noomi, she must have gotten pregnant a month after divorcing Theodore.
In that month, who did she meet? Where did she go? Madison needed to investigate thoroughly. Maybe she could find out who Hubert, Boris, and Noomi's biological father was.
While Madison was having Phoebe investigated, Edward somehow got wind that someone was looking into Phoebe's time at the media company three years ago. He felt a growing sense of unease.
He had been extremely discreet back then, and with Sandra causing trouble, Theodore would never suspect that the person he was with that night was Phoebe.
Now that Madison was getting involved, Edward realized he needed to take extra precautions.
Phoebe was completely unaware of the brewing storm outside. Theodore had gone on a sudden business trip and was out of contact. Phoebe had sent him several messages, but he hadn't responded much. She didn't know if he was too busy or deliberately ignoring her.
Phoebe didn't dwell on it. She was incredibly busy these days. As the decision-maker for her company, she had to think long-term.
For example, expanding resources.
The entertainment industry had limited resources, and there were many competitors. If she didn't actively seek opportunities, her company's actors would be left with nothing.
Opportunities had to be seized.
Even though she had Theodore as her backing, to make Superstar Entertainment thrive, she had to rely on her abilities.
Socializing often involved drinking. At first, Phoebe drank heavily, but she gradually learned the trick of taking a sip and then discreetly spitting it out, though it meant frequently changing handkerchiefs.
She had just slipped away from a banquet and was in the restroom washing her handkerchief. Standing in the hallway to sober up, she suddenly ran into someone.
The person hesitated at first, staring at her for a long time before saying, "Isn't this Ms. Ziegler? Long time no see."
Phoebe, slightly tipsy, looked up at the familiar face. "And you are?"
The man stepped closer, and under the light, Phoebe recognized him. "Raphael! I heard you got promoted to general manager. Congrats."
Raphael, also tipsy, blushed and leaned on the railing like Phoebe. "Not as impressive as you, Ms. Ziegler. Three years ago, you were my secretary, and now you're a boss."
Phoebe detected the jealousy in his voice but didn't mind. "Just luck."
Raphael, looking at her beautiful face, recalled what he had done and smugly said, "You should thank me, Ms. Ziegler."
Phoebe raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean, Raphael?"
"Don't play dumb. If I hadn't booked that room for you to spend the night with Mr. Vanderbilt, you wouldn't have gotten close to him. Isn't your company funded by Mr. Vanderbilt?" Raphael's eyes were filled with contempt.
In his mind, Phoebe had secured Edward through their night together. He had seen her leave with Edward the next morning.
Phoebe's eyes narrowed. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
She remembered Raphael giving her the room key and telling her to lock the door. If she hadn't gone to the wrong floor and entered the wrong room, none of it would have happened.
It was clear now that Raphael had been setting her up.
No wonder he had repeatedly hinted at her relationship with Edward. He thought she had slept with Edward that night.
Raphael, emboldened by alcohol, said, "Nonsense? Ms. Ziegler, I've never seen someone as ungrateful as you. I sent you to Mr. Vanderbilt's bed, you two got together, and I got nothing out of it. It's outrageous."
Raphael was used to getting what he wanted from such schemes, so he never indulged in women himself, using them as bribes instead.
Phoebe couldn't believe he could say something so shameless. Her face turned red with anger, and she kicked him.
Raphael, drunk and slow to react, tried to dodge but failed. Phoebe's kick sent him sprawling to the ground.
The floor seemed to shake.
Phoebe planted her high heel on his chest, causing him pain. Raphael yelled, "Phoebe, how dare you hit me! I'll call the police!"
"Go ahead. I'd love to tell the police about all your dirty deeds over the years. Let's see who they arrest," Phoebe snapped, her anger sobering her up.
She was glad she hadn't stayed long at that company. Otherwise, Raphael would have sold her out multiple times.
Hearing her threat, Raphael immediately begged for mercy. "Ms. Ziegler, I didn't recognize your greatness. Please don't hold it against me. I know I was wrong. I do."
Phoebe kicked him aside and stumbled away, holding onto the railing.
She didn't return to the banquet hall. She had met everyone she needed to tonight. Instead, she wandered into the hotel's courtyard.
Coincidentally, this was the same hotel where Brian had held his birthday party, and she was now standing in the courtyard where Theodore had humiliated her.
Since returning to the country, she found herself back in the same place, on a similar night, but now she was alone.
She sat down in the corridor, thinking about Raphael's filthy words.
It must have been fate that led her to the wrong floor and the wrong room that night, where she met that stranger. If she hadn't made that mistake and had gone to the room Raphael intended...
Phoebe shivered, suddenly grateful for her mistake. Otherwise, she would be the one suffering the most regret and pain now.
