Chapter 956 Rebirth Setback
Theodore's chest burned as he looked at Hubert, Boris, and Noomi, feeling as if it had been confirmed that they were his biological children.
After finally finishing dinner, Evelyn, worried that Hubert, Boris, and Noomi might disturb Theodore's rest, took them downstairs to play, leaving him alone in the room.
He steadied his emotions and picked up his phone to call Lawton.
At that moment, Lawton had been pacing outside Lakeview Estates for most of the day, mustering the courage but not daring to go in.
Initially, it was he who had given Theodore false hope, making him believe that the person who appeared in room 8888 that night was likely Phoebe, leading him to suspect that Hubert, Boris, and Noomi were his biological children.
Now the test results proved otherwise, and worse, Phoebe had found out that Theodore had taken the children's hair for a paternity test.
As the sky darkened inch by inch, he felt the guillotine hanging over his neck was about to fall.
Soon, Phoebe would be home from work. Unless he found someone to kidnap Phoebe, she would soon confront Theodore.
That would be his end.
His phone rang unexpectedly, making Lawton shudder. He gripped the phone tightly, the vibrating feeling like a death knell, each buzz tightening his heart.
Finally, he answered the call, seeing Theodore's name on the screen. He gritted his teeth and answered, "Mr. Reynolds,"
"What's going on? You said the results would be out by 8 AM. Why haven't I heard anything?" Theodore demanded on the other end.
Lawton licked his lips, his face scrunching up like a pizza. "Mr. Reynolds, I called you this morning, but you were asleep. Ms. Ziegler answered."
Theodore felt a bad premonition.
Hearing Theodore's tone drop, Lawton steeled himself. He was dead either way, so he might as well confess. "I didn't know it was Ms. Ziegler who answered. After I told her, she said you were still sleeping. I'm sorry, Mr. Reynolds. I didn't mean to. I'm ready to face the consequences."
Theodore's temple throbbed, his voice seething through clenched teeth. "So?"
Lawton closed his eyes, resigned to his fate. "The test results show that you have no biological relation to Hubert, Boris, and Noomi."
A loud crash came from the other end, followed by a busy signal. Lawton was startled and quickly shouted, "Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Reynolds, please don't be angry. Do whatever you want to me, but don't harm yourself."
In the room, Theodore was dizzy with rage, his ears ringing.
He looked at the shattered pieces of his phone on the floor and closed his eyes tightly.
Worse than finding out he wasn't related to Hubert, Boris, and Noomi was the fact that Phoebe knew he had secretly done a paternity test.
What would she think?
No wonder he hadn't seen her when he woke up, and even his WhatsApp was empty.
With her personality, if she wasn't angry, she would have stayed by his side while he was sick, or at least texted to check on him.
Now she was ignoring him. Was she mad?
Theodore's throat burned, and swallowing was painful. He felt like he still had a fever, or maybe he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed, otherwise, he wouldn't be hit with blow after blow.
Hubert, Boris, and Noomi, not being his kids, only confirmed that the person in his room that night wasn't Phoebe, a fact he had already accepted.
Though disappointed, it wouldn't affect his relationship with Phoebe.
But secretly doing a paternity test was crossing the line for Phoebe.
No matter how he explained it, it would hurt their relationship.
The more Theodore thought about it, the more he felt he had been foolish.
They had just managed to reconcile without any barriers, and now he had messed it up again.
Phoebe had been distracted all day.
There was a party that night, and though she kept a smile on her face, only she knew her soul was still at home, locked in the bedroom with Theodore.
Hearing from Lawton that Theodore had taken Hubert's hair for a paternity test had unsettled her.
She had picked up her phone countless times, intending to message Theodore to ask why he did it, but she always held back.
They had just reconciled. Did they need another conflict over this?
"Ms. Ziegler, why are you hiding here alone?" A cocky voice interrupted her thoughts. Phoebe looked up to see an annoying figure.
She took a step to leave, but Vanessa blocked her way. "Leaving as soon as you see me? What, are you that scared of me?"
Phoebe frowned, staring at the seductive Vanessa.
Recently, their companies had been clashing, and Vanessa had become increasingly arrogant.
"Scared of you? Miss Fitzroy, don't flatter yourself. I just don't want to be disgusted by someone I dislike," Phoebe said coldly.
Vanessa didn't get angry this time. She took a sip of her drink and said, "I discovered something interesting. I think Ms. Ziegler is still in the dark."
Phoebe didn't want to hear her nonsense and turned to leave, but Vanessa blocked her again. "Aren't you going to hear me out?"
Already irritated, Phoebe snapped, "Just say it."
Vanessa smirked. "This morning, I went to the company and passed by a paternity test center. I saw Lawton rushing out with a test report, looking like he was facing a great enemy. Guess who the report was about? Theodore, perhaps?"
Phoebe pursed her lips, thinking she already knew the report was about Theodore and Hubert.
She sneered, "Ms. Fitzroy, you don't miss any chance to create misunderstandings between Theodore and me. Your efforts are commendable. I wonder if God will be moved by your persistence and grant your wish."
Vanessa laughed coldly. "Phoebe, you must be anxious inside. If Theodore had an illegitimate child, could you accept it?"
Phoebe remained silent, watching her performance.
Vanessa continued, "Men, after all, can't go three years without a woman. Theodore is no exception. After we broke up, he couldn't wait to sleep with you."
Phoebe looked down at her. "I know what you're thinking. If you can't have him, no one else should. But you might be disappointed. No matter how you try to drive a wedge between us, we'll stay together. So don't waste your efforts."
Vanessa's face twisted with anger. "Then let me congratulate you in advance. You're going to be a stepmother."
Tired of her stories, Phoebe turned and walked away.
Vanessa watched her leave, a mocking smile on her lips. She wanted to see just how strong their love was, if they could stay together despite betraying each other.
