Chapter 872 Night Cry
Phoebe brought up the past not to settle old scores with Theodore, but to say that Madison had already shown signs back then.
Theodore reached out to her, and Phoebe took his hand. "What's wrong?"
"Sorry for not believing you back then." Theodore pulled her hand over, placing it under his face. Phoebe had to bend down, bringing them very close.
Phoebe looked down at him, feeling a bit amused by the belated apology. "It was years ago; no need to dwell on it."
Theodore's gaze was sincere and focused. "No matter how long ago it was, my failure to trust you back then is a debt I owe you."
Phoebe sighed. "I didn't mean to bring up old grievances."
"I'm not saying you did." Theodore gently squeezed the delicate skin of her wrist. "I'm just reflecting on the mistakes I made back then."
Phoebe feared the conversation would take a wrong turn if it continued, so she smiled and said, "It's good to acknowledge and learn from our mistakes."
Theodore tilted his head to look at her, the light casting a tender glow in his eyes. His hand slid up her arm, cupping the back of her neck, and pulled her down.
Phoebe lost her balance, quickly bracing herself against the car. The next second, Theodore lightly kissed her lips.
Phoebe was momentarily stunned, then heard a light cough nearby. She immediately turned to see Ruby standing awkwardly by the roadside.
"I'll go inside first." Ruby hurriedly ran inside.
Phoebe blushed and pushed Theodore away, playfully scolding, "Ruby must have seen everything."
Theodore teased her, "We've been together for so long; why are you still so shy?"
"Who's been with you for long?" Phoebe glared at him. "We're at most in a pursuing and being pursued relationship. Stop being coy and come inside."
With that, she turned and walked inside.
Theodore watched her embarrassed profile, chuckling. Phoebe waved a fist at him, making him laugh even more heartily.
Phoebe stomped her foot in frustration and quickly ran into the villa, slamming the door shut.
Theodore got out of the car and had just reached the door when a flash of light appeared behind him. An SUV drove up and parked behind his car.
He stood at the door, watching Evelyn get out of the passenger seat, followed by Edward.
He narrowed his eyes.
When he left the hospital, Edward was still playing the good boyfriend in Madison's room. How did he manage to pick up Evelyn from the Vanderbilt villa and bring her back so quickly?
Evelyn saw him standing at the door. "Theodore, why aren't you going inside? Just got off work?"
"Yeah."
Evelyn turned to Edward, who was walking over. "Edward, thank you for bringing me back. It's late, you should go rest. It's tiring to run around after a full day of work."
Edward's handsome face wore a gentle smile. "It's no trouble, Evelyn. I'm not tired. But you must be, spending the whole day with my mom."
"Chatting with your mother isn't tiring. Alright, you should go." Evelyn waved him off. Theodore was now living with them, and she had seen him come out of Phoebe's room in the morning.
She knew Theodore didn't like Edward's presence and didn't invite him in for coffee.
Edward lowered his eyes, a hint of malice flashing through them. When he looked up again, his expression was calm. "Alright, Evelyn, Mr. Reynolds, I'll be going then."
Evelyn immediately waved him off. After watching him drive away, she opened the door for Theodore.
"Did the kids cause any trouble at the estate today?" Evelyn started a conversation with Theodore, genuinely worried that Hubert, Boris, and Noomi might have caused trouble for the Reynolds family.
Theodore said, "No, they were well-behaved and obedient."
As they talked and walked into the villa, they heard the children crying upstairs. They exchanged a glance and quickly ran inside.
Upstairs, Phoebe was in the shower when she heard Hubert, Boris, and Noomi crying. She quickly wrapped a towel around herself and rushed out.
Hubert, Boris, and Noomi were sitting on the bed, crying with their eyes closed.
Phoebe was flustered, not knowing who to comfort first. "Don't cry, Noomi, Hubert, Boris, what's wrong? Did you have a nightmare? Mommy's here, don't be scared."
Hubert, Boris, and Noomi buried themselves in Phoebe's arms, almost knocking her off the bed. She quickly steadied herself and held them close.
Theodore and Evelyn rushed in to see Phoebe patiently comforting the children. Evelyn hurried over. "What's wrong? Are they feeling unwell?"
Phoebe bit her lip. "Maybe they were scared and had a nightmare."
"How could they be scared?" Evelyn asked.
Phoebe didn't answer. Theodore picked up Hubert and gently patted his back, soothing him. Hubert hiccuped and soon quieted down.
But Noomi kept crying. Phoebe, worried she would wake the other children, carried her out of the room.
Ruby peeked out and saw Phoebe pacing the hallway with Noomi, humming a lullaby. She softly asked, "What's wrong? Did they have too much fun today and can't sleep?"
Phoebe gently patted Noomi's back. "Maybe she had a nightmare."
Ruby had heard from Ethan about what happened at the villa today. Madison had fallen down the stairs and bled a lot. Ethan had asked if Madison would die.
It must have been this incident that scared Hubert, Boris, and Noomi, causing their nightmares.
"Try to soothe her. If she cries so hard, her throat will hurt tomorrow." Ruby felt distressed hearing her cry.
Since moving in, she had rarely heard Noomi cry so miserably. She must have been really scared to be so restless in her sleep.
"Okay, you go to sleep. I'll comfort her."
Noomi cried in Phoebe's arms for half an hour before finally falling asleep from exhaustion, leaving Phoebe heartbroken.
She carried her back to the room and laid her on the bed. Noomi was still sobbing in her sleep.
"Look at how pitiful Noomi is. Why don't I let her sleep with me tonight? If she wakes up crying in the middle of the night, the other two will wake up too, and you won't get any sleep." Evelyn suggested.
Phoebe shook her head. "No, Mom. If we move her now, she'll cry even more. Let her sleep here. She shouldn't wake up again tonight."
"Alright, it was just bad luck that Madison fell down the stairs. Luckily, it wasn't fatal." Evelyn had heard Theodore mention it briefly.
But she still felt uneasy. How could the kids encounter a bloody incident the first time they visited the Reynolds Mansion? Could it be that they and the Reynolds family just didn't get along?
