Kenjal shoots back to reality and sees Aziel and Andre looking at him in surprise.
It turns out they've been addressing him for some time while he zoomed out. “Hey Kenjal, where were you? We've been asking you for a while if you're coming. We go to the hospital to see a doctor get information about the medicines and then to the boat to check on Michel," Andre tells him.
The men leave for the hospital in their rental car. When they report to the counter, Kenjal reads the names of the doctors on duty that day on a notice board. And there he recognizes the name of an old college friend who was also going to study Law at first but later changed his mind. Kenjal never imagined meeting him here in Costa Rica. He smiles in relief, knowing that his friend will surely tell them the absolute truth in the case.
"Miss, can you tell Dr. Alpha Clays that one Kenjal Griffith urgently wants to see him?" he asks the employee at the counter. The woman gives him a professional smile. "Yes, I can do that. Please take a seat and you will receive the answer from me soon”. The men retreat to the waiting area.
After about five minutes, a tall man hurries into the waiting room. “Kenjal! Man, am I glad to see you! It's been years since we last saw each other. What are you doing here in Costa Rica, far from your weighty law firm?” he asks, taking Kenjal into a brotherly hug. Kenjal laughs hard at the man's comment, obviously happy to see him again. “Well, I was also wondering what you're doing here. America also brought you good money, why here?”
The doctor makes an inviting gesture to the other two men and together they walk to his office. Kenjal introduces them all to his school friend and they sit down on a sofa set. Afterward, the men have a friendly interaction where the doctor says that he married a Costa Rican beauty who couldn't settle in the busy cities of America. He also noticed that Costa Rica could make good use of his specialization and that the salary provided him with a nice living. So, he followed his beloved to her country and offered his services to this hospital, which still pleases him after years.
Kenjal also tells him about his practice in New York and his latest case against Aziel sitting in the room with them. Alpha looks at him strangely. “What you say, you're on vacation with the guy you downgraded in court? Is that even possible these days?” he laughs incredulously. Aziel also has to laugh about it. “Well, I won the case, so tolerance is his virtue,” he chuckles.
In the end they get to the point of the visit.
Kenjal briefly explains Loraine’s case, the frown on the doctor's face deepens. When Kenjal finishes speaking, his friend rubs his chin fiercely. “This is very irresponsible. A head nurse is not authorized to issue such a prescription to a patient who a specialist has not diagnosed. This is very dangerous, especially if the patient is not schizophrenic at all,” he says wearily. “I wonder how even the pharmacies are so negligent”.
He looks intently at Aziel. “Bring her here as soon as possible so I can run some tests to see if the drugs have damaged vital organs. In any case, the vitamin tablets are good to keep her strong, as long as she doesn't overdose."
He shakes his head in disbelief. “This is a criminal offense, you know that, Kenjal. In fact, I fear that under local laws I am obliged to report it to the authorities,” he explains. “Fortunately, the law allows me to do that within six months, and once you have left with the victim, the two countries will initiate judicial cooperation that can take another three months. So, you have nine months to handle your private affairs before the authorities intervene.”
The men look at each other. Aziel is in a serious battle of conscience, he does not want to sacrifice Loraine's health under any circumstances. The doctor sees his conflict. “But of course, everything depends on what the results of the tests show. If there is no damage, then only the criminal law stands. Because she no longer takes the drugs. But if her health is affected, I will be obliged to take her in, treat her in the hospital and immediately call the police," he clarifies.
Aziel immediately makes a decision. “I'll bring her as soon as I meet her again. They're still at the hotel and I know she'll be back in touch soon," he says confidently. The doctor nods approvingly. "That is the best. You just never know with these drugs. The man is really a devil to do this to the woman. In the longer term it would all come to an end and how would he deal with it then?!”
The men say goodbye to Doctor Alpha and now head to the boat.
“We have to do what's best for her. Alpha is right”, notes Kenjal. “If we withhold her medical attention, we're just as guilty as Danner. And I don't want to be compared to such a beast," he continues disdainfully.
The other two men are in complete agreement with him.
But what Kenjal has not noticed is that Andre is keeping a close eye on him. Ever since he saw his boyfriend lost in thought, he knew there was more to Kenjal than shows on the surface. When Aziel talked about the drugs, his facial expression explained a lot of his inner struggles. It was clear that the story of Loraine being drugged moved him deeply. Andre considers that maybe he’s not the only one who entered this relationship with a story of heartbreak. Both will have to prove that they have enough trust in each other to share their pain if they want this relationship to succeed...
