Engaged, Again
And here we stand, Aziel and I, staring into each other's eyes.
How I love this man, before, now and forever. He doesn't know yet that I'm aware that all these people here with us knew me before I lost my memory. They're playing a game, I don't understand why they don't just tell me I belong to their group of friends too. Is there a secret they are hiding, is there something in my past that could harm me?
Well, I have some surprises for them too. It takes two to tango and today is my day to confuse them.
“Loraine, you are the love of my life. Being engaged to you is the best thing that happened to me. I promise you my heart, I will never deceive you on purpose, you can always count on me in good and bad times”, he vows to me. I hear the joyful sighs around us, all our friends are watching.
We are now in a rented room in the most prestigious hotel in Barbados. Aziel has left nothing behind to have everything beautifully decorated here. The wines on the table are from the best brands, I expect no less from the food. This man will do anything to convince me of his undying love.
Especially at night.
Now that I've broken the barrier to initiate physical sex, he doesn't hold back anymore. The sex is terrific, Aziel knows how to play me like a master. Not really surprising actually, he has probably been engaged to me for years and knows my body like no other. How I wish he would come clean, tell me all about our life before. Especially about my kids, I know with certainty that I have at least one. And about my miscarriage, was I indeed pregnant with Danner? I want to hear the whole story, but I'm also scared. What if there is a drama behind my miscarriage? I want to know everything, but not to the extent that I have to hurt Aziel.
But I trust Aziel, what he does is undoubtedly in my best interest. He’s hiding all to protect me from possible grief and pain, I’m so sure of that. When he's ready, I'll hear everything. But in the meantime, I'm also going to give all my friends here the fright of their lives. Because those girlfriends of mine here have so many slips on their tongues, they are clearly too emotional to act too long in front of me, I laugh silently. Payback time now!
That naughty little devil takes hold of me as I look at my betrothed.
“Aziel, I will always love you, before, now and in the future. You can count on my faithfulness, you are my best friend and lover. Being your woman is the best thing that happened to me in my entire life.” There is a silence after my words, I can almost hear their thoughts rattling. I laugh secretly, grab my ring and look deeply into Aziel's eyes. “With this ring I reaffirm my commitment to you. You are the man of my life, it will remain that way until our last breath”, I declare, letting the ring slip on his finger. Then I bend over and kiss him wet on the lips. He still stands stiffly staring at me, unsure of my words.
“Honey, aren't you going to give me a ring? Why do I have to wait so long?” I urge him sweetly. He clears his throat, shifts a bit back and forth and looks at me. "Of course, I want to show everyone that you are off the market, you are the future Mrs. Renegade, my love,” he says as he slides the engagement ring on my finger. His mouth greedily takes hold of mine, my hands slide around his neck. Aziel is the man I love, consciously and unconsciously, wherever in the world I meet him.
There is an applause, I hold up Aziel's hand up as my triumph. This breathtaking guy is mine, I'm going to keep him for the rest of my life. We then enjoy a three-course dinner, while having a nice chat with our friends. The atmosphere is good, we are having the time of our lives.
When we break up, we agree to accompany Kaylah and Archer to the airport the following day. Andre is surprised to learn that they will be traveling on regular air services. “Hey, what's up with the jet? Why didn't you use it? Because then you will be there faster, especially now that the children are waiting for you. What's going on?” he asks urgently.
I see Kaylah look a little uneasy, she turns to Archer for support to answer. “With the CEO out of reach, we haven't been able to get permission to use it for private purposes,” Archer explains with some hesitation. “You know that traveling to Costa Rica was not a business trip, it would be a misuse of company resources,” he explains.
Both Andre and Aziel interrupt him. “That's a lame excuse and you know it very well, Archer. When in doubt, let Andre decide. After all, he is the chief executive of the mall and can make decisions on behalf of the director when absent," Aziel tells him irritably. "Good heavens, it's easy to justify in the books."
I'm listening, as I understand this conversation well, the men are assured of support from this director. It’s like that person trusts them a lot. "Hey, why this serious talk on my engagement day?" I ask them faking anger. “Next time just take the jet, Archer. It's really no big deal”.
I could hear a pin drop.
Did I say something wrong? I look around, on the faces of my friends I read different emotions. Relief, joy, nervousness, wonder. “Is something wrong? Why are you all so tense”, I ask them surprised with raised eyebrows. “N.. No, absolutely nothing wrong,” Kaylah stutters, her eyes fixed on her plate. Rick quickly refills his wine glass and also pours some more for Andre and Kenjal. Aziel saves the situation by making a final toast.
“To our friendship and a welcome to Kenjal to our ring”, he says. All nods approvingly. And then he looks at me in love. “And to my beautiful fiancé, who has proven to love me under all circumstances. I am not a fill-up or substitute lover. Her heart beats for me only.”
How ambiguous!..
