That Fish
Loraine is lying comfortably with her head on my lap as I throw the cork into the small lake. We are a bit isolated from the group, Loraine complained that she didn't want to fish close to others. Her excuse was that she doesn't want to lose her fish to competitors who stand too near us. That resulted in a burst of laughter from the entire group. This silly girl has already selected which fish in the lake is hers.
We found a good spot with some shade and believe it or not, Dale has positioned himself so that he can see us right in front of him. With great effort I control the irritation that rolls up in me like a fire, I don’t want to lose face in his presence. Loraine seems to fully understand the situation. When we arrived at this place, she handed me her fishing rod and made herself comfortable.
She is now making contact with Aziel on her IPad.
After a few seconds he comes into view, clearly happy to see her. She swings the screen so that I can also come into the picture and tells him about our trip to this uninhabited island. He doesn't seem to like that and I decide to reassure him. “Hey Aziel, you know that Loraine is in good hands with me, aren’t you?”, I tell him. And luckily a smile slides to his face. “Hey Andre, indeed. But there are always men around her as if she attracts them. That’s the thing I hate the most” I can hear the annoyance in his voice.
“Aziel, except for Asher, everyone here is gay”, I let him know dryly and now we all burst out laughing. He begins to see the absurd in his jealousy. I half-listen in as the two continue talking. Loraine is completely caught up in the conversation. I hear her talk about stocks and investments and then I hear the name of the media owner Fellogan mentioned. Isn't that the man who was at the civil registration office this morning and asked to check the population register of the island? He gave a big tip to the staff there to have his application processed within three days, a procedure that normally takes two to three weeks to be admitted.
Is Aziel doing business with him? Well, it must be a coincidence that I just met him, maybe the man wants to do some investments in Barbados and makes inquiries for the feasibility study. But if Loraine and Aziel know him, they will want to know that he is on the island.
I look up, right into Dale's eyes. Good heavens, when will I be rid of this bum for good? Maybe I should have a civilized conversation with him again instead of being hostile all the time. Emotionless I look back for a moment and let my gaze fall on my cork, which is now bobbing up and down restlessly. But when I retrieve it, I see my bait has been eaten. So, this fish also took advantage of me, eating my bait without leaving anything behind for me. Just took everything with him.
Sigh, I think life is full of profiteers, the eternal egoists. If I hadn't met Loraine that one happy day, I would be convinced by now there are no angels on Earth. But there is at least one, thank goodness!
But the fish that took off with my bait continues to occupy my mind.
Could there be another fish in the lake that would prioritize my happiness over its own life? Selflessly loving me and doing me the honor of adorning my plate in a delicious sauce just because it would make me happy?
Aaahhh, I think I'm going crazy. Why would the fish put my happiness above his? Why bother talking to Dale, listening to him when I really don't feel anything for him anymore, want to know about him? What a waste of time! Just as the fish stole my bait and satisfied its own hunger without thinking of me, so too will I ignore this Dale until he realizes that his problem is not mine to solve.
My decision is made, I'm not wasting any time on Dale, I'm now aiming for new happiness that smiles upon me. Asher!
I know it will take a long time to conquer him since he is not gay, but I am willing to be patient. Patience, because with that my own happiness will be guaranteed.
I get out of my musings when I hear Aziel say goodbye to Loraine. She kisses the screen like she always does, making me smile once again. “Loraine, let me speak to Aziel for a moment, please”, I ask her as I extend my hand to the IPad inquiringly. She puts it in my hand, jumps up and walks to the group opposite us. Her hips sway sexily as hell, all eyes are on her now. Not that she notices, this beauty is oblivious to her appearance.
“Andre, are you fond of my girlfriend?”, I suddenly hear Aziel say from the screen. I laugh heartily and decide to tease him again. “You have to admit that she is a masterpiece that no one can be blind to”, I sketch. He understands my intention and smiled.
“Aziel, I just heard you talking about that Fellogan. Not that I was eavesdropping on your conversation, but I met him this morning at the Civil Registration Bureau. Do you work together?”. The man's eyes become round like bullets, at first with terror, but then a hot rage creeps in. It scares me seriously, did I say something wrong? “Is Fellogan in Barbados? Did you see him absolutely right?” he asks tightly.
I am off balance.
Didn't he and Loraine just talk about the man as if he were a business partner? Then why is Aziel angry now? “Is something wrong, Aziel? You are so furious. Did I say something wrong?” I ask, bewildered.
“Don't tell Loraine anything about this, Andre. Do me a favor. Stay with Loraine until she goes home and please do check that no one is with her. I'll be there in a few hours."
I nod in confusion. Is someone going to explain to me what's going on? Who's the fish here now?..
