Promotions
The next morning, I am at work early, rested and all.
When Kaylah enters my office with a cup of hot coffee, I begin my brief meeting with her. “I have to put things in order at Danner's companies today. Notify his lawyers that we're meeting tonight," I tell her. “You know that the shares of the mall now partly belong to Windrug&So and me personally. I want to completely divest it into a separate entity. Are you interested in the director position? You wanted a promotion, weren’t you?”.
Kaylah looks at me in surprise. “Really, Loraine? Can I have that position?”, she asks with tears in her eyes. I look at her in surprise, as my secretary, she is not exactly unknown in the city. I know she enjoys all kinds of privileges wherever she goes. “The director's chair plus another two percent of shares and a salary that is indexed to the performance of the mall,” I offer. The chair falls from under her ass as she jumps up and falls around my neck. She screams with joy, believe me she does a good job on that. “Thank you, Loraine. When do I start?” she asks happily.
“You have to arrange that yourself with the lawyers. As soon as they can establish the limited liability company and you have drafted your contract with them, you no longer need to register here. Hire a good replacement, please, I don't have time for interviews”. She walks away dancing and smiling, forgetting that she is still a secretary and has assignments to complete.
“Aziel, are you at work yet?”, I speak into the intercom.
“Of course, babe. Do I have to be with you?” he asks.
“Please, before the staff meeting starts”, I answer. And within minutes he walks into my room. We hug and he sits across me. “Are you feeling better today? I feared you wouldn't be able to show up today. I have to organize Danner's businesses. Kaylah will be the director of the mall, we will divest it into an independent public limited company”, I explain my plans to him. “I want Damian to go to Danner's holding. I am not satisfied with the current sighting.”
“Sounds perfect. Damian is stuck here as his abilities extend further. Let's surprise him in the staff meeting," Aziel suggests. “And put the lawyers to work right away. Promotions should never be long in coming.” I totally agree with him. “Tonight we have a meeting with the staff and lawyers there. Kaylah will arrange it and will let you know later what time exactly. We immediately take Damian with us to introduce both of them. Damian will be the president of the board at the mall and Kaylah at the holding”.
While we walk to the conference room, he throws an arm lightly over my shoulders. “Thank you for yesterday. I should have controlled myself, but it was so hard. But you comforted me wonderfully,” he whispers meaningfully. I laugh hoarsely and kiss his chin.
We step into the conference room, as usual, Aziel is sitting next to me. I look at Damian with a smile, my staffer since I started this company and worked tirelessly with me to make it a success. This new position I have in store for him will triple his salary and his status will skyrocket. He is contractually obligated to spend at least three years with the company, but knowing Damian, I’m sure that he makes World Automotive the most successful company in this city. He is a driven force, excels at challenges. He has no idea why I'm smiling so openly at him, so he looks at me stunned.
“Loraine, you didn't suddenly fall in love with me, did you? I’m happily married, please, spare me a painful divorce! I don't trust that smile of yours. And also Aziel is my pub buddy and I want to keep it that way for a long time to come," he warns me dramatically. When he also sees Aziel smiling broadly, he loses his balance.
“Calm down, Damian, don't jump to conclusions. Nobody will come after you. You'll hear everything right away," Aziel reassures him. The other staffers take this opportunity to tease Damian, but he continues to keep an eye on Aziel and me.
I can hardly contain my laughter from his facial expression.
We go through some investment files and assignments from external clients until the moment arrives when I have to make the announcements. “Tonight I have a meeting with the staff of World Automotive, Danner's company. I am the full authorized representative. There are going to be some shifts in the top”, I share. Everyone nods approvingly. “Damian, you are accompanying Aziel and me to the meeting. The details are with Kaylah.” I pause in anticipation of a response from his side. “What exactly am I supposed to do there? Do you have a special assignment for me?”, he asks.
“Yes, you will be the new managing director, so I should introduce you properly to the staff there”.
Amazement, surprise, joy. They appear on his face in the same order. "Are you serious or is it a joke, Loraine?"
“One hundred percent serious, Damian,” I assure him. His eyes are watering, for the first time I see my teasing but hardworking friend so emotional. I walk over to him, pull him out of his seat and give him a strong hug. “Thank you, Loraine. You will never regret giving me this opportunity. That company becomes bigger than Danner himself imagined,” he promises.
"And that's not all. You become president of the board of trustees at the mall. Kaylah is the director. Plus two percent of the shares are yours”. Damian's eyes become round like bullets. Two percent is not little if the company continues to grow. He stares at me dumbfounded.
Everyone in the room stands in amazement to congratulate him.
“The only position to be replaced is still mine,” I joke. Everyone laughs about it.
