It Is a Goodbye
Indeed, there is Danner, waiting on the pier.
With him, there is the press, the clicking of cameras fills the atmosphere. Andre and Michelle flank as I disembark. “Miss Loraine, are you saved alone? We thought there was another man involved in the accident. Have you not found him then?”, are the questions of the journalists. A haze starts to form in my head, journalists and paparazzi seem to be part of my life. I feel no hesitation when I face them.
“Of course, I found him, we were on a deserted island all those days. He'll be aboard in a minute,” I let them know, as I continue on my way. The authorities come to meet us, Andre agrees that we will come to the office on our own to make an official statement. “Loraine!” I suddenly hear a deep male voice. Before I know it, I'm in the strong arms of a man.
Danner!
He tries to kiss me, clearly posing a spicy photo for the photographers. However, I turn my face causing his kiss to land on my ear. I take a step back. “Hi Danner, how are you?”. He stares at me startled. “Hey, I'm your fiancé, remember? You took the boat without notifying me and left. All those days I waited for you here on the pier until the police notified me that you were on your way," he let me know. I smile politely at him.
“Look, these are my friends Andre and Michelle”, I introduce him. “Michelle comes with me to our hotel room to help me pack.” I continue to the car arranged by the authorities to take us to the police station. Andre sits down next to the driver, presumably to give him instructions. Together with Michelle and Danner I take a seat at the back.
Danner looks at me startled.
"Packing up? Where are you going then? I'm your betrothed, we came to this island together," he tells me. I look at him coolly. “You're not my betrothed anymore, Danner. I'm breaking the relationship between us, whatever it may have been. I don't believe at all that we were engaged." He shakes his head in disbelief. “You pack up and just leave? How can you do that? And where are you going? You don't know anyone here, you can't remember your own past," he said.
There is still nothing on my face. “Yeah, I don't remember my past and you don't help me either. So far you haven't told me anything, we just keep traveling in your boat with no destination”, I point out to him.
Michelle, who has been listening silently all this time, is now making herself heard. “Sir, don't worry about Loraine. She's coming with me, I'm her friend. She's grown up and can decide for herself who she wants to hang out with," she tells Danner.
Furious, Danner now turns to her. “Did you persuade her to leave me and go with you? You're a stranger, what do you want from her? To extort money perhaps?” he bites to Michelle. “Then let me inform you, Loraine has no money, she is completely dependent on me. So, if you think it will benefit you, then this is a loss-making post for you.” The Danner I see now is a man of cruelty. His face is twisted with disgust and arrogance, the way he accuses Michelle is downright humiliating. But Michelle won't let that take her down.
“Well, that's fine if she doesn't have any money. Then no one can accuse me of anything," she says flatly to his face. “Mr. Winfield, don't worry about Loraine. She ends up well. She doesn't need you anymore."
Danner can no longer control his anger, he is not used to being contradicted. “Loraine, you're coming with me and that's final. I will not tolerate third-party idiocy!” he says bluntly, gripping my arm like a vice and pulling me towards him.
Michelle is still not impressed by him, she looks at him with a straight face. “Mr. Winfield, I don't think you can afford a scandal at such an early stage. I’m sure you know what I mean," she hisses at him. Startled, Danner lets go of my hand, stiffens and looks at Michelle. Michelle stares back with raised eyebrows. “What do you say yourself, Mr. Winfield? I suggest you let Loraine pack her belongings calmly after the interrogation without holding her back. And she no longer needs your medicines, as you can see for yourself," she warns him.
I look questioningly from one to the other, it is clear to me that there is more going on than they are expressing. "Do any of you mind updating me, please?" I ask them. Danner blushes as Michelle gives him a questioning look. “Mr. Winfield, do you want the honor of fulfilling her wish?” she asks Danner ambiguously. He shakes his head vehemently. “Please let her stay with me, she's all I've got. My life is meaningless without Loraine,” he begs Michelle.
“She is not your property. You keep making the same mistake. Pray that this time it will fizzle out, otherwise you can get more than you served," Michelle tells him. “You really went too far this time.” The two people talk in riddles, disregarding me while sitting near them. “People, I'm still here. When is someone going to explain something to me?” I ask desperately.
“Not before its time, Loraine. Be patient, everything will come up soon”, Andre now joins the conversation. I sigh in despair and decide to ask Aziel later. He will never lie to me.
We enter the police station where I make my detailed statement. Then the three of us went to the hotel. Andre goes straight to his own room, probably Kenjal is waiting for him there. Michelle enters Danner's room with me and helps me throw everything into a suitcase. It's not much, most of the stuff is on Danner's boat.
When we're done, I see Danner sitting on the bed, expressionless. I walk over to him and take him in my arms. “Farewell, Danner, and thanks for all you've done for me. But it's time for me to move on with my life without you," I tell him. With a final kiss on his cheek, I grab my bag and follow Michelle without looking back. Into a new life...
