Chapter 33

MIRIAM'S POV
I smiled as Daniel walked out of the hospital because it felt like I was granted the freedom I have been longing for a very long time now.
I thought of convincing the doctor to take this thing out of my stomach just so I can be myself and do the things I was supposed to do. But the thought of how everyone around me would feel made me forget about it.
I turned to look at Trish who was busy running around doing the things that the nurses asked her to do so that meeting the doctor would not be a difficult task for us. They all seem so excited about this whole pregnancy drama.
I wondered why but I was in no place to tell them what to do and what not to, especially when it has to do with personal interest.
I would just have this baby and hand it over to them so that I can be more concentrated on the things that mean the world to me.
"The nurse said the doctor would be here shortly. We just have to exercise a little bit of patience." Trish said as she finished her what she was doing and took a seat next to me.
"That's alright. I have a lot of time so I can wait no matter how long the doctor takes." I said to her and she shrugged.
"So how are you feeling now?" She asked as she turned to look at me.
"Much better than when I was at home. I think that house is getting me sick. I really need to be going out regularly but Daniel would not let me." I complained about the way Daniel holds me hostage like a little child who might get lost if she leaves the house to Trish, and she was just laughing all through.
"What is funny about what I just said. I can't believe I was just complaining to you and all you could do is laugh at me. That's ridiculous." I said with a grin and her cheeks were beginning to turn red..
"You would hurt yourself with laughter." I added as I opened the pack of cheesecake I had gotten on our way here and started eating it.
"Laughter doesn't hurt, it heals. You should laugh more, or don't you think?" She said to me and I dropped the piece of cheesecake that I was already moving to my mouth.
"Do you mean I don't smile?" I asked her because she sounded like I was a sadist.
"I mean laugh. To laugh is different from smiling." She explained.
"You are so ridiculous, what do you even mean?" I asked her again as I forced some more cheesecake into my already filled mouth.
"You should take some water." She said handing me a bottle of water but I declined her offer and continued eating the cheesecake.
"Is there anything you would like me to get for you?" She asked me and I nodded affirmatively.
"What could that be?" She asked as she stood up to her feet.
"More cheesecake." I said as I lifted up the pack I had in my hand showing her that it was almost finished.
She left immediately to get me the cheesecake and I sat there waiting for her to return.
It was almost half an hour and she was not yet back. I stood up and walked outside but I did not see anything that looked like Trish. I was actually getting scared that something bad might have happened to her but I tried to put myself together pretending that all will be fine.
"Miriam, you can now go in to see the doctor. He is waiting for you." The nurse that Trish was working with to get things done announced.
Although I was glad that the doctor was around and ready to see me at the moment, I wasn't happy about the fact that I would be going in to see the doctor without eating the cheesecake Trish went to get.
"Alright, thank you." I told her and she walked away. Another nurse came over to where I was seated and led me to the doctor's office.
I followed her as she led me until we got to the door to the doctor's office.
"Here we are." She said pointing at the door as she walked away, leaving me at the door.
I knocked on the door and walked in there after.
The doctor looked different but he was the same person that attended to me the other day.
"Good to have you here again Miriam." He said with his face still bent down and glued to his laptop. I wondered how he guessed I was the one because he had not raised his face to look at me.
"Hello doctor. I said, still standing by the door.
"Please have a seat." He offered and I walked in and took a seat.
"So tell me, how have you been?" He asked with his face still glued to his device. I promised myself that I would not give him any respect until he raises his face to look at me.
So I stayed quiet, licking my fingers and hoping Trish would just walk in with the cheesecake I asked her to go get for me.
He noticed that I was not saying anything so he finally left whatever he was doing to look at me.
"Wow! You look so good. Better than the last time you were here." He exclaimed although I did not see any change or difference.
"You could finish up with whatever you are doing if it is that important. I can wait." I told him and he giggled.
"I have all day to listen to you. So please proceed." The doctor said with a comic voice.
"I can bet you are not a comedian." I teased him and he laughed out loud.
"Well, it depends. I can be one now if that is what you want." He giggled and I smiled.
"I am much better than I was the last time." I mimicked him and he started laughing and then stood up from his seat and walked towards me.
"Come with me." He said to me and I stood up to follow him as he led me to a corner in his office and made me lay down on the little bed in his office.
As soon as I got laid, he started checking me and taking down notes. While he was at it, he called a nurse who walked in immediately and was asked to get something for him.
Shortly after that, the nurse walked in with something that looked like a first aid box but it wasn't. I was still lying on the little uncomfortable bed and my back was beginning to hurt.
I complained about the bed hurting me but the doctor did nothing about it. He only kept assuring me that I would be down soon.
I didn't know what he asked the nurse to do but she started doing some random things on my body there after, I was asked to come down from the bed.
"Thank you nurse, you can now excuse us." The doctor said and the nurse walked out.
I sat there staring at the doctor without knowing what to say to him.
I was busy hoping that the doctor would just say that there was something wrong with the baby so that I would have a valid reason to get it out of me.
And guess what? He didn't disappoint me.
"You are actually doing fine, Miriam, but the baby is not." He started as he scanned through the document he had in his hands and raised his face to look at me occasionally.
"So what are we going to do about it?" I asked, waiting for him to tell me what I needed to hear which is taking out this stress.
"For that reason, you are going to be kept on bed rest for some days here." He said and I became really upset when I heard that.
"There is no need for that, I will be just fine at home." I argued and he smiled mischievously at me.
"Look, I have more than enough people at home to attend and take care of me so I don't have to be here." I continued but he didn't take me seriously at all.
"Why is it that you are so stubborn? I don't want to stay here. You can just,,,"
"Hey, it's fine, just relax." He cut me short and sounded so comforting.
"So are you done already?" I asked him as it seemed like his office was choking me, I needed to leave at once.
"Just give me a moment." He stated and picked up the telephone and made a call. I just sat there, looking at him like an idiot.
"It's not any of your fault, I should blame myself because I requested to be taken to the hospital." I said to myself underneath my breath.
"Are you referring to me?" He asked me but I nodded telling him no. I guess he heard me say something but he didn't get the details.
He also muttered some words over the phone which I didn't hear but after a while, the same nurse that left earlier walked into the office.
He stood up from his seat and looked straight at me and didn't say anything for a moment.
"Please go with her." He instructed and the nurse helped me stand up from my seat.
"Where is she taking me?" I asked him because I was curious and really anxious about what they were going to do to me.
"She would take care of you." He said and took his seat.
"I told you I have more than enough people to take care of me." I said with so much anger because I was angry already.
"Chill, she is just going to give you some medications and that's all." He said and I took a deep breath just to suppress the burning anger that was already overwhelming me.
At that, I followed her out of the room, carefully walking behind her.
"Please can I speak to my maid?" I asked the nurse and she obliged me although she followed me to the reception where I met Trish standing at the counter discussing with one of the nurses.
She walked up to me the moment she saw me approach her and I took her to the spot we were sitting before I asked her to go get me the cheesecake.
She opened the bag and handed me two more packs of cheesecake but I was no longer interested in them so I gave them back to her.
"I'm so sorry I stayed long Miriam, I didn't find it in any of the stores around here." She apologised and I just nodded. I didn't even have the energy to respond to her.
"Please call Daniel and tell him to come get me. I am going in to take some medications and I will be out shortly." I said to her as I turned back and walked towards the nurse who was standing at a corner waiting for me.
"Right away." Trish responded at the top of her voice because I had already gone far away from her.
As I walked with the nurse, she kept talking to me, telling me different stories that I found really boring.
"Could you please keep quiet?" I scolded her because I was already getting fed up by her constant chatter which made her look so stupid before me. Her countenance changed immediately and she stopped talking.
"Look I am sorry, I didn't intend to offend you, I was just fed up with all you were saying." I explained but she kept a straight face and kept on moving.
"I'm really sorry, I am not in a good frame of mind. A lot has been going on in my life lately and I just can't get hold of my emotions." I explained further and she smiled as we entered the room.
"It's fine," she said as she closed the door behind her after walking into the room.
"I just said what I said to keep you company and make you feel better." She added and I was relieved that I was able to make her feel better.
"Come sit here." She said and I followed her instruction.
"I need you to relax, I will be back in a bit." She said with a beautiful smile on her face as she helped me relax on the stool she asked me to sit on before walking out of the room.
I took a deeper breath, deeper than the ones I have ever taken before now.
I was really nervous and scared and I felt my whole body shaking and I needed to relax.
My heart beat increased as each second went by and I was just not comfortable where I was. I stood up immediately and started walking around the whole room.
I walked towards the wall and leaned on it. I felt a lump in my throat that I couldn't swallow and I couldn't spit it out either. I felt so uneasy that I began to scream.
I screamed so loud that the wall I was shaking was beginning to vibrate so I let go of it.
At that moment, the doctors and nurses in the hospital ran into the room, everyone panting and panicking.
I turned to look at them and I could see the fear in their eyes. My own eyes were filled with tears and I just kept staring at them. Then the nurse that brought me in walked up to me and held me in an embrace.
It felt so good and that was exactly what I needed at that point in time.
I let out the tears that had already formed in my eyes and it rolled down my cheeks and then it fell on her shoulder.
When she let go of me, I felt calm and better. She gave me a reassuring smile and helped me sit down again.
Then she took a tray from another nurse and placed it on the table beside me. Then she brought out a string and a drug and injected me with it.
I sat there looking at the other nurses and doctors who kept staring at us like we were some clown. Then one after another, they started moving out of the room until it was just me and the nurse.
She sat on the other stool by my side and was massaging the spot she just injected.
"I think I need someone to massage my feet." I told her and she smiled.
"I will do that as soon as I am done with this one, is that okay?" She asked me and I nodded my head. Then she continued massaging my hand.
Not long after that, I began to feel dizzy and in not more than one minute, I fell asleep.
