Chapter 68

MIRIAM'S POV
As I got to my room, I tried to open the door but it was locked. For a moment, I was confused and I tried to process what was going on. Then I remembered that I had left Cherry in and she must have locked the door as I walked out.
I started knocking but there was no response after a long time.
I needed to rest a little and even sleep. I kept on knocking and calling her name but she wouldn't respond. So I opened my phone and searched through my contacts and I didn't have her contact. I had to call Daniel to call her.
He called me moments later telling me that she had left her phone in the living room as it started ringing there the moment he called.
"Are you saying she is not responding?" He asked me again over the phone.
"Yes, she is not responding." I replied and before I could get the phone off my ears, there was Daniel standing behind me.
"When did you get here?" I asked him as I was so surprised to see him here.
"Did you leave her here?" He asked again and I saw panic and fear envelope my beta.
I held his both hands together and tried to calm him down assuring him that whatever be the case I will help him handle the situation.
He started crying at that moment and it was as though the words I was saying to him were hurting him.
I had to pull him close and embrace him. When I let him go, I found that he had stopped crying.
I looked at the door and I figured that I could break it down since Cherry was not responding.
I pushed Daniel away and moved back a little and with every fibre in me, I hit the door with my left leg and it broke open.
And there was Cherry whose body was on the bed and her head hanging at the edge of the bed with blood dripping from her mouth.
I rushed to her immediately and raised her up. I tried to find her pulse and luckily it was still there. She only passed out and I was still yet to find out what caused this. I am sure I left her all alone in the room, Cherry is not stupid that she want to harm herself.
While still holding her close, I felt a shadow resting on me. At first, I thought it was Daniel who walked in because he did not come in with me when I did, so I was relaxed. Not until I felt a gun on my head. I looked up and saw that it was one of the rebels. I began to wonder how he got in here because I was so sure that I had killed six of them and the last one was my captive.
I tried as much as I could to be calm and quietly stood up on my feet with both hands up as he instructed after pushing Cherry into the bed properly.
As soon as I got up on my feet, he shot my legs and I bent down on my knees.
I expected Daniel to walk in and help me with this mess but he didn't and I was disappointed. I tried to look at the door but a slap from this masked man turned my face from the direction I was looking at.
Then I heard a loud noise and before I could raise my head, Daniel had hit the rebels on his neck and he was already lying dead before me.
"Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" He asked me at the same time.
"Check the bathroom, make sure no one is there." I muttered as I tried to endure the pain. The gun shot I just received was hurting badly.
Daniel rushed to the bathroom immediately and there was no one, he then ran to the closet, and searched everywhere in the room.
"There is no one else." He whispered and sat down beside me.
"She is still alive. Hurry, take her to the hospital." I said to him but he was reluctant. Instead of going after his girlfriend and making sure she was okay, he sat beside me asking to take me to the hospital first.
"Every second you waste reduces her chances of surviving this. Go now." I commanded but in a very calm tune that would sound like an appeal.
Daniel stood up immediately and I carried Cherry in his arms. As he walked out of the door, I limped behind him as I could not walk properly because of the injury from the gunshot.
By the time I limped to the living room, I saw fear boldly written on everyone's face.
Ivy stood up straight off as she saw me and came to help me.
After sitting me down, she began to ask me what was going on but I could tell her nothing.
"I hope Cherry will be fine." She murmured and I prayed silently in that direction too.
"Where is the captive?" I shouted.
"Daniel asked us to keep him in the prison." One of the servants responded.
"Both of you, go fetch him for me." I ordered two of them and they walked right away.
"And the three of you, search the whole house and make sure there is no stranger in this house." I instructed the remaining three that were standing before me and they proceeded.
"I think I have to call the police." Ivy picked up her phone and started dialling it.
Trish already came with a first aid box and tried to get the bullet out of my leg.
"Call the hospital. I don't think I will be able to get there today." I directed Trish and she dropped what she was doing and got at it.
"A doctor and a nurse will be here soon." She declared and I became a bit relieved.
While still sitting there, the servants came in with my captive and I took out the gun I collected from the one Daniel just killed in my room and pointed it at him. He began to flutter and I smiled at him.
"Give me one reason I should not blow off your head." I said to him and he could not say a thing.
"You had the guts to lie to me, yeah?" I yelled and he fell from his knees and sat on his leg.
He looked like he did not understand what I meant but I was not deceived by his facial expressions. I struggled to stand up on my hurting feet and gave him a hard slap when I got to the point he was.
"Ahhhh," he screamed with a loud voice and I landed another slap on his chin commanding him to keep quiet.
"Now tell me, how many were you that attacked my house?" I roared and even my servants shook at my voice. There was absolute quiet that moment and it was as though everyone became scared of me because they all started moving away from me.
It was only Trish that walked behind me and prevented me from falling down.
"Are you ready to answer me now?" I asked the rebel who was already bleeding from his mouth because of the slap I gave him.
He nodded his head affirmatively and I went back to my seat waiting for his response.
"There is no one else in the house. We found this in your room." The three servants I had sent to search the house chorused and I turned to look at them. One of them was carrying a member of the rebel I we just killed in my room.
"Take him to the truck." I told them and they moved at my command.
"We were actually ten of us," he began and I was no longer interested in the story.
"Carry him back to the cell." I told the people that had brought him in and they did as I said. While he was being carried out, he kept crying for mercy and swore to tell me everything that was going on but I kept a deaf ear to all his pleas. While he was being carried out, I pulled out the gun, targeted his head and shot.
He died instantly and the servants carrying him turned to look at me immediately.
"Add him to the number in the truck." I said and rested my head on the couch where I was sitting.
Ivy came closer and hugged me while Trish continued treating my wounds to the best of her ability.
It took a very long time before Daniel came back. As he opened the door and walked in, I saw pain all over him. I kept praying that he does not announce Cherry's death because that would be the most painful thing that would happen to us.
"She is on life support." He said and my heart that was beating fast stopped at once. It was such a relief.
I held my chest and laid back on the couch.
"How are you feeling?" He asked as he sat beside me, pulling me into his arms.
"Much better. The doctor will soon be here." I mumbled and he gave me a weak smile.
"What are we going to do now?" He asked me but got no response because I was yet to come up with anything. I was just blank and all I could think of was what we all just saw this morning.
The funny thing is that it is not yet over. The last man I just killed confessed that they were ten.
"We have two more of them on our tail at the moment." I broke the news of the fact that we have not gotten rid of all of them to Daniel and the look he wore only tells that he was already tired of the whole drama.
"What do you mean?" He queried with surprise and I just smiled hoping it would calm the situation but it did not as he was already very agitated and stood up to his feet promptly.
"Look, you have to be calm. I have confirmed that they are not inside the house but I am sure they are somewhere and I must find them.
"Like this?" He pointed at my leg and I also looked down at it and wondered how I would be able to do all I wanted to do with just one leg.
"It's going to be fine. All I need is some pain killers and I am sure the doctors will do their best to get me back on my feet." I assured him and made him sit down beside me.
"Don't worry Daniel, we will get through this." Ivy said to Daniel and a little smile appeared on his face.
She then walked to the television and turned it on.
"The news is all over the place." Ivy said as she increased the volume of the television and went back to her seat.
"What news?" Daniel retorted and she said it was the news of the arrival of the rebels and their plan to take over all the packs and institute a common government.
"That will never happen. I will fight them with every drop of my blood." I said in a tune that sounded like I was reciting a poem.
"Don't be too hard on yourself." Daniel took my hand and tried to seat me down because I rose to my feet as I got the news. But I withdrew my hand and limped towards the television as though I was not seeing it from the place I stood.
On getting to the front of the television, I stared seriously at it as the news came and I wished I was seeing the rebels already. All that I would do to them was the thought that filled my heart.
A knock came on the door and it was opened by one of the servants who stood by the door.
The doctor and nurse entered and Trish came to where I was and stood behind me without saying anything. The doctor and nurse took their seats and waited patiently for me to come meet them.
"What is it?" I asked Trish who stood behind me pretending not to know why she was standing there.
"The doctor is here." She calmly responded and I turned to face them. I started limping toward them and when she tried to hold me, I slapped her hand and she let go of me and only walked behind me.
When I got to where they sat, the doctor looked at me and smiled.
"I will give you something that will help you relax." He said as he opened the box he came with.
"I don't need something that will make me relax. I need something that will ease the pain I am feeling now so I can get up on my feet and do what I am supposed to do." I yelled and he gestured that I calmed down.
"I am serious. It's not going to be funny if you give me something that will make me sleep." I made it clear to him and he promised not to do anything unreasonable.
He commenced treatment and in no time the bullet was out of my legs. I screamed as he treated it because it was so painful.
"Do you want to walk with it?" He asked me and I found that as a very dumb question but I still answered.
"I will rather you rest for a few days so that the wound will heal." The doctor suggested and I gave him a stern look.
"I don't have the time for frivolities." I stared at him with my bloodshot eyes and hev had no option but to do as I commanded.
"You really have to take it easy on yourself. Daniel said and it made me feel as though he did not understand what we were going through.
"I can't, not until all of this mess is over." I answered and continued monitoring what the doctor was doing.
"What is the time?" I asked no one in particular as the doctor finished tying the bandage.
"It's almost seven pm," the nurse responded.
"What time did I say we are leaving?" I turned to Daniel.
"Nine," he reluctantly said and I stood up to feel my leg on the ground. The pain was not completely gone but it was reduced to an extent.
"I will come over every two days to clean and dress the wound." The doctor stated as he stood up to his feet to leave and the nurse followed suit.
"That will not be necessary." I said as I walked towards the stairs.
"Miriam!" Daniel screamed but I did not bother myself with his concerns.
"I hope my room is clean?" I stated and the cleaners responded positively.
"You will stay in my room." Daniel said and followed me. The doctor and nurse left straight away too and it was just Trish and Ivy left in the living room.
