Chapter 58
CHRISTOPHER'S POV
As I walked into the living room, I almost scolded her for eating her nails again but I had to let it slide.
"This girl never learns." I murmured underneath my breath as I walked in just to make sure that she doesn't hear me.
I sat down quietly without saying anything to her nor did I make any sounds that would draw her attention.
When she finally noticed my presence she turned to me and I saw nothing but anger and frustration on her face.
I tried to ask her what was going on but instead of responding to me she kept on beating herself.
I decided not to ask her either if she really wanted to speak to me she would.
Emily walked in immediately and I thought she would say something since Louise was not forthcoming.
But she also kept staring at me blankly and I was already getting disgusted at their attitude.
So I stood up and walked out. The plan was to go to my room and rest my head since they wouldn't give me peace nor tell me why they were bothered.
"Are you actually walking out on us?" Louise asked me and I wondered if she gave a thought to the statements that came out of her mouth.
"Are you not the same person I have been sitting here with for a couple of minutes now, did you say anything to me? What would you have me do when all you do is pace around without saying anything." I retorted and she started laughing sarcastically.
"I'm in no mood for this drama of yours so if you wouldn't mind I will be in my room." I said and continued walking up the stairs.
"The council of elders are waiting for you in the conference room." Emily finally spoke up and I had to stop at the point I had gotten to on the stairs and started walking down.
"Is this what you were both finding difficult to tell me long ago?" I said to them as I headed towards the conference room.
While on my way to the conference room it struck my mind that they know why the council of elders came unannounced .
So I had to turn back and went to ask them what was going on.
"Could you both tell me why the council of elders are here? To the best of my knowledge we did not schedule any meeting and I don't see any reason why they should be here at this time." I asked them but they said nothing.
I persisted and tried as much as I could just to get a response from them but they were both adamant and refused to say anything.
Then I threatened them that I will not speak to the council of elders if they don't tell me what is going on so I can know how to approach the matter.
Then Emily finally said it was because of my marriage with Louise.
It happens that the council of elders I through with their investigation and they came to give us feedback on their findings.
"You both should know better than stressing me beyond unnecessary next time." He said to them as I walked towards the conference room for the second time.
I got to the door and knocked before going in.
As I entered and sat on my chair, I noticed that the elders were looking at me in an awkward manner.
I tried as much as I could not to ask them why they were giving me that look.
Everywhere became silent as soon as I entered and to break the ice I had to greet them.
They all responded to my greeting reluctantly but that didn't bother me in any way. I was more concerned about the reason they were here just so I can know whether I am moving forward or not.
"I heard you are done with your investigation with respect to my marriage with Louise so I'm here to get the reports from you." I continued after greeting them since they were not willing to talk without me inciting them.
Adam cleared his throat for a while. I thought he was going to speak but he did not.
I was already losing patience so I had to hit the table and screamed at them too.
Now instead of saying anything reasonable they all accused me of being disrespectful and impatient.
"Did you just say I am impatient? How long have I been sitting down here waiting for you to give me a response?" I asked them but none of them could give me any reply.
"It's fine I'm sorry for being disrespectful so could you please tell me why I am here now?" I apologised since that is the only way I can get them to speak to me.
"So like you already know this is about your marriage with Louise." Adams started and then he turned to another elder and asked him to tell me more about the findings that they made.
The elder to whom Adams delegated the duty to speak to me, stood up on his feet and cleared his throat also.
"Can you just talk already?" I mumbled underneath my breath as I used my fist to hit the table slightly.
"You cannot marry Louise." He stated plainly and took his seat.
"What do you mean by I cannot marry Louise? We have all agreed on this already and as it stands plans have already been made with respect to this marriage." I reminded them since it seems that they have forgotten already.
Instead of saying anything further, they all sat there shaking their heads.
"I would appreciate it if you tell me what exactly is the reason behind this decision of yours." I said to them as I stood on my feet.
"From our investigations you were not properly divorced from Miriam. And the only implication of that is that she is your only Luna and no one else can take her place without a proper divorce with her." Another elder said and it was then I remembered that Miriam left abruptly and there was no chance for us to even think of a proper divorce.
"So what do you advise that I do?" I asked the elders because at this point in time I could not think of any possible solution to this predicament that has befallen us.
"If you really intend to marry Luisa the best you could do right now is to look for Miriam and have a proper divorce with her that is only when you can be free to take another wife."Adam advised whilst still shaking his head.
This whole thing was becoming very frustrating already because the truth is that I don't even know where Miriam is.
I have never been to where she comes from nor do I even know where so I don't even know how I would go about this search.
"Is this all?" I asked with a very faint voice and they all nodded stating that it was all they wanted to tell me.
"If that be the case, permit me to leave." I said as I stood up and turned to face the door.
"Bear in mind that we don't have time on our side. The marriage process must commence in less than three months so whatever you are doing, make it quick." One of the elders said as I turned to leave so I had to pause and listen to him.
"Less than three months?" I exclaimed because I never expected the time to be this short.
"It ought to be less Christopher, we only had to give you more time so that you can properly have the divorce done with Miriam." Adams stated and that weakened me the most.
"Do you all know that I don't even know where Miriam is at the moment? We had a misunderstanding that night and she left hastily. I thought she would come back but ever since then she has never done that.
I have never heard from her nor have I heard from anyone close to her so I don't even know where she is right now." I expressed my frustration before them hoping they would pity me and maybe extend the time for me or possibly allow me to go on with this marriage without having to go through the process of getting a divorce with Miriam.
"Our hands are tied Christopher there is nothing we can do to help you at this moment. It is a tradition and it must be followed. You can not get into another marriage when you still have one pending, not as alpha." The last elder who has not said a word since the meeting began stated.
"That is not even all you need to do." Adams chipped in and without waiting to hear him complete his statement I jumped in immediately cutting him short.
"What else do you want me to do? It seems you are hell bent on frustrating me." I lashed out my anger on him and he stood up in anger too and shouted me down.
"Don't you ever try what you just did now again." Another elder scolded me after Adams finished with me.
I apologised to them and went back to my seat and tried as much as I could to calm down so I could hear what he actually wanted to say.
But it happened that he was already very angry with me so he refused to talk.
I had to beg him, the other elders too had to join me in begging him.
"Your brother was never like this. You should try as much as you can to emulate his good behaviour." He walked up to me and spat that in my face but I tried as much as I could to keep my cool.
"Report reaching me is that your beta betrayed you and as such you had to send him away." Adam started after calming down.
"Yes I had to send him away because he tried to usurp my powers. He was the reason why you thought that I was not performing my duties properly as alpha." I answered him and he turned to me and smiled mischievously.
"Yes I know that Michael said some things about you to us but he was not the reason why said most of the things we said to you. You were actually not performing and that was not good." He cleared me as he went back and took his seat.
"Does this mean that he would have to get a beta first?" Another elder stated and my heart beat increased at that moment.
I thought I would have to complete this marriage process first before going on to do something else.
"It all depends on him although I feel he cannot do anything without a beta right now." Adams responded to the elder that just finished speaking.
"So tell us which you will be going for first." He asked me and I had to take a deep breath and think for a while what I was going to do because I had nothing in mind.
"Can you all give me a moment to think about this thing? I will give you my response as soon as I can." I pleaded and I stood up on my feet again and said pacing around the conference room.
"We can only give you a few minutes." Adams informed me and I tried as much as I could to juggle my brain in order to get something out of it.
As I got close to the wall I screamed and hit the wall with my palm.
"Don't do that again, learn to put your emotions in check." One of the elders said and as I turned to look at him I saw that he was really angry with me because his eyes had turned to fire.
What came to my mind at that point was to do something that will annoy him the most so that we can get into a fight or something.
That is the only way I can calm myself down. But this man looked really furious and more like a monster he will devour me if I do anything stupid so I had to calm down and concentrate on thinking in as much as I could not.
"My sister, my sister." I said at the top of my voice as I heard my voice echo back to me.
"What do you mean by your sister?" The elder I had just offended said to me and I tried to explain to him that I would want my sister Emily to be my beta.
"Emily should work with me as my beta for the meantime until I am able to get someone to replace Micheal." I explained and they all nodded probably in agreement.
"Does this mean that Michael's crime was so grave that you cannot forgive him?" One of the elders asked me and I was surprised at his question because I saw it as foolish.
Why would he think I would want someone that tried to take over my position to come back to work with me.
Michael could kill me if he has the opportunity.
"I don't know what you all think about this but the truth is that I can no longer work with Michael." I made it clear to them as I came back to the table.
"I have no problem with you working with Emily as beta. All you have to do is make sure that she has the requisite knowledge and expertise for this." He continued but I did not say anything further to him.
"Are we all in agreement that Emily will replace Michael?" Adams asked the other elders and they all chorused a yes.
"Thank you very much." I said and walked out of the room without even bothering myself with whether or not they leave.
As I walked into the living room, Emily and Louise stood up on their feet and walked straight to me.
They both started asking me about the meeting and how it went. I just had to tell them to calm down with gestures as I walked to take a seat.
"Louise and I cannot get married for now." I said to them after being silent for a while.
"And why is that?" Emily asked me immediately she heard me speak and I kept quiet for a while thinking of how best to break the news to them.
"That is because I did not have a proper divorce with Miriam. So she is my only Luna and cannot be replaced." I stated and Louise broke down in tears immediately.
Emily walked over to her and started consoling her while I stood up to leave because I did not have any other thing to say to her that would make her feel any better.
