Chapter 69
MIRIAM'S POV
"Stop that and hurry. Make sure you don't bother her." I heard Daniel say that but u was not sure of who he was speaking to because my eyes were closed.
I opened it and it was one of the servants. I gently stood up on my feet and walked after the servant as he walked out of Daniel's room where I was laid.
As I got downstairs, I saw Daniel and two of the servants preparing to leave. He was surprised to see me because he thought I was asleep.
"You fell asleep so I decided not to bother you." He said with shock all over his face.
"It's fine." I said as I dragged myself along, without disputing the fact that he thought I was asleep while I wasn't.
"I can handle this and you know it. Why don't you stay back and allow me to do this?" Daniel said but I ignored him and even walked past him while he stood at the spot staring at me like he just saw an alien.
As I got outside, the driver and two other servants were already outside in the truck. I stood beside one of the cars we use for errands as I didn't want to use my car, nor did I want Daniel to drive his.
"What are you doing there? Come over here." Daniel said as he opened his car.
"This is the car we are using." I stated and without arguing, he went back inside to get the keys.
As soon as he got out, Ivy and Trish followed him and asked why they were here.
"I don't think this place is safe enough for us. Let's just come with you." Ivy stated but there is no way I am going to let them come with us. It's already unfortunate that they had to witness what happened. It was supposed to be between myself and Daniels and I was thinking of what to say to them to make them never say a word of what they saw today. Especially Cherry, we need to work on her mind, I thought to myself as I listened to all Ivy had to say.
"Trust me Ivy, nothing will go wrong. The police should be here anytime soon so don't be scared." I tapped her back and hugged her.
"You can go home if you cannot stay." Trish stated and the confidence in her voice amazed me.
Daniel supported what she just suggested and even offered that we can drop her off on our way but she agreed to stay back with Trish.
"If anything goes wrong, although I doubt it would, call me." I counted my words as I told her what to do. I wanted to give her one of the guns I had with me but I decided against it. Daniel and I will need it if the rebels become funny.
With that, we entered the car and drove off. The truck containing the members of the rebels we just killed drove behind Daniel and I.
It was such a long drive. I don't think I have ever been here before now. Of course I haven't. There has never been a reason for that.
I sat quietly in the car as Daniel drove and I caught him several times checking up on me.
"I'm fine. Just keep your eyes on the wheels." I said to him as I was already finding the incessant checking annoying.
"I just want to be sure that you are okay." He muttered and I gave him a thumbs up.
While we were driving, the car got to a point and stopped.
"What is it?" I asked him and he was as confused as I was. The driver and the other two servants had to stop and help us check the car. I sat in the car as the men were checking it and putting it in order.
Before long, we were on our journey again and in about an hour, we were there.
I came out of the car and scanned the environment and I was amazed. The forest was just too beautiful and I wondered why I had never thought it wise to come here before now.
"What do we do with them?" Daniel asked me as he walked to meet me. I was already going inside the forest and he had to stop me.
"Do you even know where you are going?" He questioned me as he grabbed my arm and made me stop at a spot.
"I was just curious and wanted to see what the bush had." I replied as I leaned on him.
"There is just nothing about it. It's just very large and I guess that is why the rebels chose this spot as their hideout." He explained but I still felt like seeing everything with my eyes.
"We are just going to leave the truck here." I responded to the first question he asked as I turned back to where we came from.
"That is the best thing to do. Don't you think we need to ambush this place?" Daniel asked and I felt the question was too forward.
"We will do all we can to protect our pack when the time is right." I said as I spat out the saliva in my mouth.
"And how long are we going to wait? Isn't this enough for us to attack?" He said in anger as his voice increased.
"I think you should not bother yourself too much. Leave it to me and just follow my directives." I said and he shrugged.
I smiled at him and tickled him but he didn't laugh. I really wanted him to laugh so I said a joke but my beta was way out of this world. He wanted to have the rebels in his hand and crush them.
"This is what the council of elders have been warning about, right?" I asked him and he nodded.
"I need to see them tomorrow." I said and he promised to put out notice for the meeting as soon as we get home.
"Okay guys, I think we should be on our way now." Daniel announced and we started hearing gunshots immediately.
"What do we do?" The driver screamed out and I pointed at the car.
Everyone ran towards the car and within seconds, we were all inside.
Daniel drove as fast as he could. He was driving at such a high speed that I thought we would have a crash.
Even after driving quite a distance from the forest, we still heard gunshots coming behind us. Then I knew that the war was a full blown one and we needed to be on our feet.
I turned back and I was another truck chasing us. I told Daniel of the situation we had at hand and he increased his speed the more.
The annoying thing about this journey is that the road was free. Not even one car could be sighted. Then I realised we were still very far and anything could happen.
I told Daniel to stop the car when they were already too close. I was ready to face them now even though I don't live to see tomorrow.
"I will not let you do that." Daniel said and continued driving.
I knew he would not so I didn't stress it any further.
It got to a point that I could hear the sound from the truck engine. I wanted to shoot at them but yet again Daniel stopped me and took a diversion to the left.
Our pursuers drove past us as they were on a very high speed and they probably didn't expect us to take that turn. The new route we took led us to Ivy's house and I asked Daniel to pull in the parking lot in front of the building.
"This is an opportunity for me to see Ivy's dad." I turned to Daniel and he shook his head.
"We would just wait for you here." Daniel said as I opened the car door but I insisted we all go in together.
So everyone came out of the car and walked to the door. I raised my hand to knock, but before my folded fist reached the door, it flung open and a beautiful young lady stood in front of me smiling. I forced a smile too just to make her comfortable.
"I am his nurse. He asked me to come get you." She said, still smiling.
"Please come in." She ushered us into the building and we walked after her.
"Thank you," I said as we got into the living room.
"What do you care for?" She asked as she held her hands together.
"We are fine." Everyone else chorused as they took their seats and I just stood by and stared at them.
"Please get me water." I requested as I was badly thirsty and she nodded.
"I will get you water but you have to come with me while the rest of your men wait here for you." She said in the warmest tune I have heard in a long time.
As I stood up to go with her, Daniel held my hand and pulled my head closer.
"Are you sure about this?" He whispered into my ears and the warm air that came out of his mouth tickled me as it went straight into my eardrum.
"I will be fine. I have always wanted to come here, you know?" I said to him and he gave me a stern look while I smirked and stood to my feet.
She led me up the stairs and then into a room. The room was quite small and well decorated with lots of beautiful ornaments. It was so unique because there were more artefacts that can only be found in museums.
Then she walked towards the balcony and as she opened the curtains, the smoke that escaped into the room almost got me blind.
I covered my eyes slightly with my hand and walked towards her because she stood by and held the curtains for me to walk through it.
"I told her to go fetch you as soon as I saw you step out of that car." Ivy's father said and I looked down and saw the car we just parked. He had seen us as we came in.
"Good evening sir." I greeted as I sat on the empty seat.
"It's morning already, Miriam. Why are you out so late?" He said and I looked down at my watch and realised that it would be dawn in less than four hours.
"The rebels are hot on our tail." Were the only words that escaped from my lips as I was already stuttering.
"Why haven't you come since?" He asked me and I didn't know what excuse to give.
"And your child?" He asked, looking at my stomach. I also looked down at my stomach and I missed those days it was still protruding.
"I lost it." I told him and he shook his head in pity.
"What do you want?" He asked me as he blew the smoke in his mouth into the air.
"Everything I need to help me fight the rebels." I responded, putting before him my request in one sentence.
"Here is the water you asked for." The nurse came in with a glass of water in her hand and I took it and dropped it on the table.
We both sat quietly for a while staring at each other. Then he cleared his throat and told me to drink my water.
I picked the glass and gulped down the water.
"We have some pancakes." He told me but I was not interested.
"Tell me what I need to do." I reminded him as he seems to have forgotten my request.
"Can you come here very often?" He asked me and I took a while before responding to him.
"I will give you hints as you progress. For now, know that you need help. Don't rely on your police and your powers alone." He said and took a while to smoke whilst I began to ponder on what he had just said.
I started thinking of what alliance and what relationship I needed to get into at the moment.
"I will talk to Daniel about this, he should have a good idea about this." I said to myself as I looked up at the old man sitting before me.
"That is all you have to know for now. The rebels would not strike until they have a leader and they haven't gotten any at the moment." He added and I felt a little more relaxed.
"Thank you very much." I expressed my gratitude as I stood up to leave.
"Don't leave until dawn." He instructed and I nodded before walking out of the room.
As I got to the living room, every single person I came with had fallen asleep.
I decided not to wake them up so I sat on the only empty couch and squeezed myself in it.
"He said you could use Ivy's room." The nurse whispered as I could barely hear her. She was avoiding waking the men.
"I will just be fine here. You could get me a blanket if you don't mind." I politely declined her offer.
"Sure," she walked off and before I could properly adjust myself on the couch, she returned with a blanket in her hands. She even helped cover me with it and all I did was close my eyes and sleep like a baby.
I slept for about two hours but it felt like I didn't even sleep for thirty minutes.
Daniel and the other men were all up already but I could not find them.
I had to ask the nurse who told me that they were waiting for me outside.
I requested to see Ivy's father before leaving and the nurse led me to his room again.
I still found him sitting in the same spot on the balcony with a cup of coffee.
"You care for some coffee?" He asked without even seeing me. He must have felt my presence, I thought to myself.
"No, I will rather have some vegetables this morning." I yawned as I stood in front of me.
"Tell Ivy to come see me." He told me and I walked out.
"Hey," Daniel said as soon as saw me walk out of the building.
"Are we all ready?" I asked and he said I was the one keeping them.
I apologised and we got into the car and began our journey.
"We still have a long drive ahead of us." He told me as he squeezed my hand with one hand and placed the other one on the steering.
The drive was indeed long because I slept several times and woke up too but we still haven't gotten home.
When we finally did, Daniel asked me to go and catch some sleep but I was too apprehensive to sleep.
