Chapter 168 Wedding Dress
"Dad, let me help you back." The two embraced for a long time and gradually separated, looking at each other with complex expressions. Katniss glanced down at Nathan's swollen knee and gently said, her tone returning to gentleness.
With Katniss supporting him, Nathan limped towards the house. Watching Nathan and Katniss slowly pass by me, I couldn't help but start thinking as I lay in the bushes, what should I do now? Should I leave or go back to the house? After much thought, I suddenly had a special premonition that tonight's events would definitely not end so simply and peacefully. Everything would have unexpected twists, who could guarantee that Nathan and Katniss would sleep in separate rooms peacefully tonight?
After much contemplation, I still couldn't rest assured. If I left like this, I wouldn't see what would happen tonight. Driven by curiosity and compulsion, I decided to go back to Nathan to continue monitoring. I got up from the bushes, brushed off the grass and dirt on me, and then, under the cover of night, ran towards Nathan's house through the woods and bushes. I had to get back to the house before Nathan and Katniss returned.
Due to Nathan's slight knee injury, Katniss helped him walk slowly. I bypassed them and finally made it back to Nathan's house after running all the way. Once inside, I slipped behind the curtains as usual, for some reason, being behind the curtains gave me a sense of security.
After waiting for about five minutes, Katniss helped Nathan into the bedroom, and I held my breath behind the curtain. Nathan sat on the bed in his underwear, and Katniss took out a wet wipe to clean the dirt on his knee, as well as disinfect it. After cleaning it, I saw the bruises and swelling on Nathan's knee.
"Let me get some medicine to apply on it for you." Katniss glanced at Nathan's wound, although it was just a minor injury, a hint of tenderness still showed in her eyes. Katniss took care of Nathan's house, she knew where everything was placed, including the medicine box.
"Never mind, Katniss, it's just a minor injury." Nathan held Katniss's hand to refuse, but this time, Nathan held onto Katniss's hand again. And after grabbing it, he didn't let go, as if wanting to feel Katniss's touch and warmth, cherishing every moment of contact.
After being held by Nathan, Katniss hesitated for a moment, then slowly withdrew her hand. Nathan felt Katniss's rejection, sighed disappointedly. Just outside, Nathan promised Katniss that he would never force her again, but it seemed that Nathan still couldn't bear to let go of Katniss. The hand-holding just now seemed like a test, after Katniss's loss of control earlier, Nathan dared not force Katniss again. Perhaps this was the first time Nathan saw Katniss's strong side.
The room suddenly fell into a brief silence. After sighing, Nathan's eyes began to scan the room. The bright red festive bedding, the neatly arranged room, the red curtains, and the large wedding photos on the windows and walls all foreshadowed an upcoming special wedding. However, as the protagonist of the wedding, Nathan, at this moment, looked at everything in the room with little joy, only reluctance and sadness in his eyes.
Katniss stood on the ground, also surveying everything in the room along with Nathan, a hint of melancholy in her eyes. Both of them knew that the beginning of the wedding might signify the end of their relationship, and everything would become painful yet beautiful memories.
"I'm going to sleep in the next room, you should sleep early too." Feeling the oppressive atmosphere, Katniss said to Nathan, as if she also wanted to escape the newlywed atmosphere in the room. Katniss turned and walked towards the door.
"Katniss." Nathan suddenly called out to Katniss after hearing her words. Katniss, stopped in her tracks, her delicate body trembling slightly, but she didn't turn around.
"What's wrong?" Katniss replied to Nathan with her back to him, but she might not know what Nathan was going to do, whether she was afraid or anticipating, due to the tension, her voice trembled slightly as she spoke.
"Well..." Nathan lowered his head, rubbing his brow with one hand, the other hand fidgeting with the bedding, showing extreme nervousness.
Feeling Nathan's tension and hesitation, Katniss turned around to look at Nathan, her face showing nervousness and confusion. Perhaps she was afraid that Nathan would propose to her again? Was it just fear? Was there no faint expectation in Katniss's heart?
"Katniss, can you fulfill my last wish? As long as you can fulfill this wish, I will have no regrets in this life." Nathan knew that this was his only chance tonight, if he didn't bring it up now, he would have no chance in the future.
"W-what, what wish?" Katniss clutched her clothes, trembling nervously, not knowing what request Nathan would make.
"This." Nathan vigorously rubbed the bedsheet with his hand, too nervous to speak.
"Could it be that he wants to make love to Katniss?" I couldn't help but think to myself, after all, Nathan had promised Katniss outside that he wouldn't force her again, but asking Katniss for intimacy wouldn't count as forcing, right?
"If you have any thoughts, just say it. As long as I can do it, I will agree." Katniss couldn't figure out Nathan's intentions, so she answered without much enthusiasm, leaving herself room to refuse.
"Can you put on the wedding dress in the closet? Stand with me in front of the mirror, let me see this scene in the mirror, I want to eternally remember this image in my mind, carry it into the coffin. I just want to fulfill the last wish in my heart, consider it as a way to make up for my regrets, because I can never be with you in this lifetime." Nathan took a deep breath. Then, he said affectionately to Katniss, his face showing nervousness and anticipation, unsure if his request was too much.
Upon hearing Nathan's request, Katniss couldn't help but let out a scream, but fortunately, she covered her mouth in the end. She really didn't expect Nathan to make this request, and I, behind the curtain, also felt very surprised.
Behind the curtain, my brain was running at high speed. Nathan knew he could never be with Katniss in this lifetime, and he was about to start a new family with another woman. Nathan loved Katniss, possibly until the end of his life, but this lingering regret in his heart couldn't be satisfied. Tonight, with no one else around, just the two of them, he asked Katniss to wear a wedding dress and stand with him, not for a photo, but to see the reflection in the mirror, to preserve this image in his mind. In this wedding room that belonged only to the two of them tonight, they held a wedding that belonged only to them, the most fleeting wedding, without blessings from family and friends, an unofficial wedding without registration. Everything was done to satisfy Nathan's vanity and the regret in his heart that could never be fulfilled.
Katniss covered her mouth, her eyes wide open, looking at Nathan. She seemed to understand Nathan's intentions and thoughts, feeling deeply moved by his profound love for her. She perhaps didn't expect Nathan to be so deeply in love with her. Her originally strong heart should have been cracked open by Nathan at this moment.
Tears began to flow from the corners of Katniss's eyes, a mix of being moved and heartbroken. And I, hiding behind the curtain, couldn't help but feel a pang in my heart, my emotions were also very complex. As a son, I hoped Katniss would agree to Nathan, to fulfill his unattainable wish, even if it was a false wedding, I didn't want the old man to have any regrets in his later years. But as a husband, I didn't want Katniss to agree to Nathan. Although this wedding was fake, it carried significant meaning, and if Katniss agreed to Nathan, the wedding would no longer be exclusive to me. I hesitated behind the curtain, then sighed lightly, deciding to leave the choice to Katniss, no matter how she decided, I would respect her decision.
"I'm sorry, I know this request is a bit much. Just forget I said anything, go to sleep." After stating his request, Nathan didn't look up at Katniss, keeping his head down the whole time, as if he couldn't face Katniss and was afraid to hear her refusal. At this moment, Katniss, with a complex and tearful expression, didn't answer aloud due to her emotional turmoil. Nathan thought Katniss's silence was a silent rejection, so he quickly retracted his words, but the regret on his face was thick, as if the remaining vitality in his body had suddenly faded, making him look much older in an instant.
"I agree." A voice as melodious as a heavenly sound echoed in the room, the voice was very soft, just four simple words reverberating in the room, but the impact of these four words was incomparable.
In an instant of disbelief, Nathan looked up at Katniss, his eyes wide with disbelief. Perhaps he didn't hold much hope himself, already prepared for rejection, but he didn't expect Katniss to suddenly agree. And I, behind the curtain, closed my eyes in pain. Although I respected Katniss's decision and hoped she would agree to Nathan for his sake, when Katniss truly agreed, the anguish in my heart reached its peak. I knew that Katniss agreeing to Nathan might not be out of love, but because of Nathan's deep love and dedication to her, Katniss's agreement was mainly due to Nathan's moving her. But I couldn't control or avoid the pain in my heart.
"Okay, thank you, Katniss, really thank you." Nathan couldn't hide his inner joy, he jumped off the bed, ran to the wardrobe as if flying, the surprise brought by Katniss's agreement made him even forget the pain in his knees. Katniss agreeing to him made him not care about anything else.
After opening the wardrobe, Nathan took out the dress and wedding gown that he and Jennifer were supposed to wear on the wedding day, and gently placed them on the bed. Katniss looked at everything with a complex gaze, a mix of reluctance and unwillingness, but seeing Nathan's expression, his words just now, and everything that happened outside, Katniss still agreed to it all. Perhaps this false wedding and photo also left a grudge in Katniss's heart.
After some hesitation, Katniss sighed silently, then slowly walked to the bed in high heels, and picked up the flawless white wedding gown.
