Chapter 284
After thinking for a long time, I called Mia first. Mia on the other end of the phone was just like before, speaking clearly and efficiently. However, for some reason, there was a hint of melancholy in her tone. Although Mia concealed it very subtly, I could still sense it. You see, for a strong woman like Mia to have this kind of tone is very rare, so I could still pick up on it.
What could possibly affect a woman like Mia's emotions like this? Of course, I was just curious and didn't want to pry into anything. What I needed to do was ask Mia for a leave of absence. Mia readily agreed to my request for leave and also affirmed my work during this period. Calculating it, it seemed like I hadn't seen Mia for several days. It wasn't time for her to go abroad yet, but she hadn't been to the office for a long time. I wondered where she had gone. For someone like her, who was a workaholic, everything seemed unusual.
After calling Mia, I was about to call Katniss, but after some thought, I felt like I couldn't explain things clearly over the phone. Besides, we couldn't see each other's expressions on the phone, so I couldn't gauge Katniss's state of mind. Therefore, I decided to go home first.
I put on my coat and left the office, checking the time. It was already half past nine in the morning. If things went faster, I could finish the inspection in the morning. Before getting in the car, I called the attending physician and set up a time. Everything was ready, just waiting for me to pick up Katniss and go to the hospital.
Soon, I arrived downstairs at my home. I finally managed to get through to Katniss on the phone. I told Katniss to come downstairs, and I would be waiting for her in the car. I didn't mention what we were going to do; I would tell her once she got in the car.
Shortly after, Katniss came out of the apartment building. I checked the time, and it had been less than ten minutes from when I called her to when she came downstairs.
I was prepared for a long wait, as women usually take their time with makeup and dressing up before leaving. But seeing Katniss without any makeup and coming out directly surprised me.
"No makeup?"
After Katniss got in the car, I asked her directly.
"I was afraid my husband had an emergency, so I came down as soon as I got dressed after you called."
Katniss was still a bit out of breath, indicating she was in a hurry to get dressed and come down. Now, Katniss was very obedient to my words, even with the timing. Seeing Katniss like this, it seemed like she wasn't my wife but more like a subordinate, very efficient.
Actually, I knew that Katniss's guilt and affection were the main reasons for her behavior. But the more she acted this way towards me, the more guilty and uneasy I felt because Katniss didn't know a big secret.
"It's nothing, just taking you to the hospital for a check-up. It's about time."
I looked at Katniss's slightly disheveled hair. It seemed like she hadn't had time to fix her hair before coming down. I smiled and concealed my true purpose for the check-up.
But after hearing my words, Katniss's face showed a moment of unnaturalness. There was confusion, panic, nervousness, and perhaps some other emotions in her expression. I wasn't sure what those emotions were.
Katniss quickly regained her composure, nodding normally, looking very obedient.
As we drove to the hospital, Katniss didn't look around out the window like she used to, nor did she chat with me. Instead, her eyes were fixed on the scenery outside the window. Although she seemed to be admiring the view, I could see from the corner of my eye that her gaze was unmoving, revealing some emotions.
Eyes are the windows to the soul, and it was clear that Katniss's inner turmoil was not settled at the moment. I wondered if this simple check-up would trigger something in her mind.
"We're here."
When the car stopped, Katniss was still looking out the window, and I had already unfastened my seatbelt. She seemed to be lost in her thoughts, not focusing on her eyes or ears but on her mind.
In the end, I had to remind her aloud. But even after my reminder, Katniss remained motionless, as if she hadn't heard me. At that moment, she seemed like a statue.
"Katniss, we've arrived."
Finally, I had to touch her arm to bring her back to reality, and then I spoke.
Katniss suddenly snapped out of it, and my touch startled her. She seemed a bit flustered, as if she had done something wrong. Her face turned slightly red, showing a hint of embarrassment.
After responding, she quickly got out of the car. When she opened the door, she almost bumped into a passerby walking by the car.
The passerby was startled at first and seemed like he was about to get angry. But after seeing Katniss getting out of the car, the male passerby seemed to lose his temper and just said, "It's okay," before leaving. Even though Katniss wasn't wearing makeup at the moment, her natural beauty couldn't be concealed, and she even exuded a sense of natural charm.
Before entering the hospital building, Katniss finally regained her composure. What was going through Katniss's mind just now? Did she suspect that I was already dissatisfied with her and Nathan's situation? Or did she think about Nathan, realizing that their relationship might decrease or end due to her condition? Everything was unknown, and I needed to explore it slowly.
Perhaps to cover up her recent embarrassment or maybe to feel closer to me, Katniss took the initiative to hold my arm and walked into the hospital building with me.
On the way, Katniss and I were undoubtedly the most eye-catching people. Due to work reasons, I was dressed very formally, and thanks to Mia's styling, my overall appearance was not something an ordinary person could afford.
Katniss, on the other hand, attracted the attention of other men. With her natural beauty and a hint of illness due to her makeup-free face, she gave off a sense of natural beauty and a touch of endearment.
Meeting the attending physician felt like a world away. I remembered the last time I came for Katniss's treatment, and back then, I was completely different from now. Even Katniss had changed. When the doctor saw me, he seemed much more polite than last time. After all, during this period, I had been in contact with the upper echelons of society in this city, and my reputation was gradually spreading. It seemed like I was slowly integrating into the upper social circles, but no one knew that I was bound by a small family matter in my heart.
After the examination form was filled out, Katniss glanced at me and then went into the examination room with the doctor. I sat in the office, waiting for the results of the examination. I couldn't help but feel nervous about the upcoming results.
If Katniss's condition hadn't improved, then it wouldn't be a big deal. I could endure a few more days like this, as I had somewhat gotten used to it. But if Katniss's condition had improved or even recovered, that was what I was afraid of. What would I do then? Would I directly tell Katniss to end things with Nathan? If it ended abruptly, could Katniss really accept it?
Katniss and Nathan didn't know about the surveillance at home. If I issued the order to end things and Katniss and Nathan engaged in a relationship behind my back again, I would be in for another major shock.
Would the scene of infidelity and cliff jumping on the deserted island repeat itself?
