Chapter 205
During Mia's time, I basically stood facing the window on the balcony. I dared not face her penetrating eyes, as if they could see through everything, maybe the flaw when I opened the door just now had aroused her suspicion.
"Alright, Katniss, I should head back to the company now. You just stay at home and take care of Kevin. Take a rest, and come back to work at the company when you're done. It's just a little something from me." I heard Mia say she was leaving after sitting in my house for less than ten minutes. At this point, I finally turned around. After all, when a guest is leaving, the host should see them off.
With Katniss in front and me behind, when Mia opened the door, I noticed two people standing behind the door, a man and a woman, Mia's bodyguards. With a big household and big business, Mia always had people following her when she went out. I couldn't help but envy her. However, I had no intention of currying favor. If Mia were a man, I might have tried to build some connections for social purposes, but since she's a woman, I decided against it. It just felt like brown-nosing to try to build relationships with a woman, and being with Mia, a cold, noble, and elegant woman, always made me feel suppressed and small.
In the last moment before Mia closed the door, I saw her glance in my direction. In that moment when our eyes met, I seemed to see a hint of unusual emotion in her eyes. The door closed, and I was left puzzled. That last look from her filled me with a sense of fear, but I couldn't pinpoint the source of that fear. Before leaving, Mia left a check for $15,000. For us, it was a significant amount of money, but for her, it was just a drop in the bucket.
By noon, Jennifer and Nathan came to our house and bought some groceries and household items. Every time Nathan faced me, there was a hint of fear and unease. Even though I had amnesia and forgot about those things, he still seemed fearful, unsure of when I might regain my memory.
"Jennifer, when are you and Dad going to have the wedding? The original date was set, but it got postponed due to the accident." I sat alone on the balcony drinking coffee, while Katniss and Jennifer chatted on the sofa. Since my accident, the joyful atmosphere in the house that was originally preparing for Nathan's wedding had disappeared, leaving only a sense of oppression. Hearing Katniss's question, I couldn't help but be curious. With my back turned to them, I strained to listen. Honestly, I wanted Nathan and Jennifer to have the wedding soon so I could carry out my plan afterwards. I hadn't revealed the truth or left yet because I didn't want to ruin Nathan and Jennifer's wedding. Jennifer was innocent, after all.
"Let's forget about it. We're not planning to have the wedding anymore. It's just a formality. Living together with Nathan is fine for me. After discussing it with Nathan, we've decided not to have the wedding. A photo for memory will suffice." Jennifer sighed and expressed some regret in her words, but mostly contentment. My accident had taken away the festive atmosphere of the wedding, so there was no longer a need for it.
Despite Katniss's repeated persuasion, Nathan and Jennifer firmly refused, and the wedding was canceled. Sitting on the balcony pretending to be clueless, I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. Not having the wedding was fine; at least I wouldn't have to worry about anything. Things needed to be resolved. Everyone had been feeling repressed during this time, and I had been too. It was time to let go completely.
As dinner time approached, Jennifer took charge of cooking but found some ingredients were missing when she was preparing. Jennifer decided to go to the market to buy them.
"Nathan, come with me to the market." Jennifer changed her clothes, put on her shoes, and said to Nathan.
"I'll go with you." Just as Nathan was about to respond, I stood up from the sofa. Since Nathan and the others came back, I had been almost silent, just drinking coffee, daydreaming, thinking, and watching TV. My sudden words stunned everyone in the room because they were so strange and incomprehensible.
"I want to go out for a walk. It's too stuffy in the house." I explained at this point to avoid raising suspicions at home.
"Alright, then come with me. I'll take you to places you used to frequent." Jennifer seemed very happy to see me take the initiative to go out. For someone with amnesia, proactive exploration and seeking knowledge were good. I had my reasons for doing this; I wanted to know what kind of communication Katniss and Nathan would have in my absence. At least before I left, I didn't want to leave any lingering doubts or regrets.
"I'll go with you too." Nathan seemed a bit awkward at this point, as if he was worried about something, and he stood up and said.
"I'll just take Kevin with me. You and Katniss stay at home and get all the groceries sorted." After saying these words, Jennifer took my hand and went out. At this moment, Jennifer really treated me like a child with amnesia, holding my hand tightly, as if afraid I would forget the way and get lost. I couldn't help but feel a sense of comfort at this moment, knowing that there was still someone genuinely caring for me. The care from Katniss and Nathan, after understanding some things, seemed like insincere gestures in my eyes.
"Jennifer, does Katniss and Nathan both love me?" Walking hand in hand with Jennifer on the street, I couldn't help but ask the question that I most wanted to know the answer to. It was the source of my current doubts and uncertainties, perhaps someone else could answer it for me.
"They do love you, of course. When you were sick, I saw how Katniss took care of you. As for your father, let me tell you, these past few days after your accident, he's been sighing all day and staying up all night. So, he definitely loves you. Why would you even ask such a question?" Although Jennifer was holding my hand, my thoughts were very pure. I only had respect for Jennifer.
"Nothing, just looking for some past memories." Jennifer's response was very straightforward. Even though Jennifer found the answer in her words, I still couldn't believe in Katniss and Nathan's love for me. When I was sick, Katniss taking care of me was more out of guilt, and Nathan sighing all day was probably because he was worried that one day I would regain my memory and the affair with Katniss would be exposed. For some reason, my thoughts at this moment were all negative, no matter what the answer was, there was a negative aspect in my mind.
After returning home with Jennifer, Katniss and Nathan were indeed in the kitchen preparing meat and vegetables. Seeing the two of them, they seemed perfectly normal, but knowing the truth, I knew they must have had some communication. I could only search for answers in the surveillance footage.
After the family finished dinner, Katniss and Jennifer acted as two maids at the dining table, constantly serving me food, which was the last warmth I felt. After dinner, Jennifer and Nathan quickly left before it got completely dark. Nathan's boat was docked by the shore, and with no wind tonight, there was no danger for them to return.
After dinner, Katniss seemed preoccupied while tidying up the house, and I went into the bedroom. Since it was time to come clean, I didn't care if my actions would raise suspicions. While Katniss was in the kitchen, I closed the bedroom door and prepared to make a phone call.
"Honey, what are you doing?" As soon as I entered the bedroom and closed the door, Katniss hurried over and opened the bedroom door, asking me. Since I didn't want to sleep in the bedroom last night, my sudden return to the bedroom and closing the door must have made Katniss very puzzled and concerned.
"Nothing, just wanted to go online." I had already turned on the computer, wearing headphones on my head, I turned back to answer.
"Okay, just let me know if you need anything." Katniss's face showed a hint of doubt. Would a person with amnesia play on the computer? Although she was doubtful, Katniss didn't dwell on it and gently reminded me before closing the door and leaving.
Once Katniss closed the door, I opened the surveillance footage. It seemed like I hadn't checked the home surveillance in a long time. I went straight to the time when Jennifer and I were out. Everything in the house was exposed before my eyes.
I saw Katniss and Nathan sitting in the house after Jennifer and I left. In my absence, the worries on Katniss's face finally surfaced, and Nathan was the same, sitting silently on the sofa. After a moment of silence, Katniss got up and walked towards the kitchen. Hearing Katniss's footsteps, Nathan looked up at her and then followed her slowly.
"You go watch TV, I can handle it myself." Katniss saw Nathan following her and couldn't help but say to him. When she said this, Katniss didn't turn around, as if she didn't want to face Nathan.
"Let me help you, it'll be faster." Nathan took out the vegetables and started washing them directly, while Katniss sighed slightly and prepared to put on an apron.
"How's Kevin doing lately? Has he recovered some memories?" Nathan seemed very focused on washing the vegetables, but he took advantage of the rare moment alone with Katniss to ask the question he was most worried about.
"He's the same as before, indifferent, speaks very little, and is very cold and distant towards me." After hearing Nathan's words, Katniss seemed to be touched by Nathan's words, and her movements of putting on the apron paused slightly, answering with a lot of distress.
"I've never dared to ask you one question, do you hate me?" After hearing Katniss's words, Nathan stared at the vegetables he was washing, unable to meet Katniss's eyes, and asked another question.
"I only hate myself." After hearing Nathan's words, Katniss raised her head, closed her eyes in thought for a moment, seeming reluctant to answer the question, and only after a long time did she vaguely respond to the question.
"It would be great if Kevin never recovered his memory. That way, he wouldn't have any worries. But what if he does recover his memory?" Nathan's face showed a struggling expression at this moment.
"I hope he does recover his memory. I don't want him to be a person with incomplete thoughts." Katniss pressed her hand on the cutting board, full of hope.
"But what if he does recover his memory?" Nathan was no longer calm at this moment, he turned to look at Katniss.
"Whatever the consequences may be, I'm willing to bear them. After all, it was my fault." After saying this, Katniss couldn't hold back her tears, but as soon as the tears flowed from the corner of her eyes, she picked up the apron to wipe them away, afraid of smudging her makeup and leaving traces.
"I'm sorry." Seeing Katniss crying, Nathan wanted to reach out to comfort her, but his hand hesitated in mid-air, lacking the courage to go further.
"Let's not talk about it. Everything will work out in the end, it's all up to fate. Whatever the result, I'll accept it. I just hope he can recover and be healthy. I don't want to ruin the rest of his life." Katniss tried hard to control her emotions, forcing a faint smile, as if she didn't want Jennifer and me to see any flaws.
Nathan wanted to say more, but the words couldn't come out. Both of them were busy in the kitchen with heavy hearts, waiting until Jennifer and I returned. After closing the computer video, I looked back, and Katniss was still busy tidying up the kitchen. Even when watching the video, I didn't lock the door, or guard against Katniss. There was nothing left to hide at this point. From the video, it was clear that Nathan was afraid, and Katniss was worried. Katniss had perhaps already prepared herself to face the consequences. In fact, many times during this period, whenever I saw Katniss taking care of me, my heart would unconsciously soften, wanting to give up the idea of leaving and forgive Katniss. But every time I remembered the night Katniss and I spent on the island, her helping Nathan put on the wedding dress, and the tender moments between the two of them by my sickbed, my heart would turn cold again, casting aside all concerns.
Katniss finally finished tidying up the room. She turned back in the bedroom, saw me sitting on the computer chair, wiped the sweat from my forehead with the back of her hand, and gave me a faint smile, but there was a hint of bitterness in that smile.
