Chapter 17
The environment was so quiet for the moment as Desse focused her face and eye on Christabel's Mum who was clearing her throat before she continued talking.
'I never felt that what I did with him on that day was a bad idea because I know it was just a way of appreciating him. He gave me reason to keep pushing without quitting. Weeks later I didn't see or hear from him and his family until I heard some side talks from some girls who said he had relocated and no longer lived in that area with his family. That day I thought my life was crumbling because I was already pregnant and that would be a very big liability to me. My aunt already vowed that if she ever set her eye on me she would not hesitate killing me because I made her daughter lose her first ever suitor. Hmmm鈥� so from then till today my daughter Christabel and I have always been struggling to survive. Christabel has been a good child, never greedy, instead always content with whatever I provide for her" Christabel's mother explained in a very sad tone.
Both Riel and his wife Desse repositioned themselves on the chair where they were sitting.
'Earlier today what you saw鈥� hmmm鈥�. I was really tired and I needed to drink something so Christabel begged me to allow her to get me water down the road. I refused at first but I had no strength at that point and there was no one else to send so I had to let her go. Few minutes after she left she came back with the water and I drank it immediately so I could quench my thirst. After I had taken the water we decided to have a little chip chat before we heard noise coming from outside so we decided to run out before we could even ask any questions or say anything. They started breaking down the planks and zinc we use to form a nest for ourselves. We tried begging them but they refused to answer until they were done with the demolishing. One of the men who looked like their leader, came closer and pulled Christabel by her hair and said that Christabel should either return the water she stole or pay double for it. I felt so shattered because I had given Christabel money to buy the water before she left so there was no way she could have stolen it and the man had to destroy their house because of one bottle of water!" She said in a very angry tone.
'What? Because of just a bottle of water!!" Desse shouted.
'Oh no that's really bad, why would he even think of demolishing your house for a bottle of water? That really bad and he must be punished severely for that" Riel concluded.
She waited until they were done talking before she continued.
'He then dragged us out and told the boys he brought with him to go that he will continue from there. They all left him and began to beat me, he called me all sort of name and also threatened to kill me and sell by daughter off since I said he should not touch her. That was when you arrived and not only did you bail us but you also said me and Christabel. I am really grateful for that" as she knelt down in front of both Desse and Riel joining her hands together.
The both of them were felt uncomfortable to see her kneeling before them so they immediately ordered her to stand.
'No don't do that, stand up and make yourself comfortable. I will make sure he pays dearly for what he did to the both of you" Riel said angrily.
Desse also asked her to stand after that she ordered one of the guards to go call Christabel from her room. The guard went immediately and called Christabel. When Christabel arrived to the place where they where Desse called her so she went to meet her. Desse could not help but imagine what pain she must have pass through this past few years of her life. She hugged her so tightly and gave her a peck on her forehead. Riel cleared her throat and said
'I think it's high time I pass my judgment"
He used his hands and signaled one of the guards who was on standby. The guard immediately rushed down to where he was and now down.
'Go and bring that man that was brought in earlier today" He ordered
'Okay Sir. I will do that right away ' the guard responded and went to carry out the order immediately.
They all waited patiently for the arrival of both the guard and the man. Few minutes later the guard brought in the man. He looked like someone who was once in the army and used anybody who he felt was good to use as his new punching bag. He had a lot of bruises on his body, somewhere really bad. He looked like he has always been involved in different kinds of fights.
Desse glanced at him like she would kill him if she was being given the opportunity to do so while, Riel love at him so angrily. Christabel and her mum held themselves tightly still frightened by the man.
'What was you reason for demolishing their house or even beating and stripping her off her clothes? Why did you not ask questions before making judgment?" Desse asked with so much anger.
Riel noticed how angry Desse was with the man and he did want to handle the situation poorly instead he wanted to handle it professionally.
'I see you have something to say, go ahead and say it I am listening" Riel said as he held Desse hand given her signal to please calm down while he handle the situation.
Desse was not happy to hear what her husband asked but she stayed calm because Riel asked her to do so.
