Chapter 43
**In the mansion**
It was a busy hot afternoon, all workers in the mansion were busy with something due to the upcoming visit of Mr Paul.
'Where is Stephen and why is he not here with you people?" Desse asked some set of guards who were taking in some newly bought items for the mansion.
'I don't know where he is right now Ma, but he was working with us here a few minutes ago." One of the guards replied to her in a shaking voice.
'Yes Ma, he was here a few moments ago but I don't know where he must have possibly gone now." Another guard replied.
'So what you all are trying to tell me now is that you don't know where Stephen went. Did he disappear when he was going and none of you saw him when he was leaving?" Desse asked them angrily.
Stephen is not only the chief guard, he is also the most trusted and hard working guard in the mansion. Desse and Riel had known him even before they got married. His father was an adviser to the late emperor and when he died his son started working as a guard in the mansion at a very young age. Riel was already fun of him because they both grew up together. If there was anything difficult or secret errands they wanted to send to carry they would always call him. Even when he got married three years ago they all attended the wedding and Riel supported him like a brother.
'Stephen is supposed to be here because he needs to keep records of everything that was brought in and besides he is the chief guard. He is supposed to be here directing you people." Desse said to them, angrily.
'Here he comes Ma" one of the guards who saw Stephen from the saw said to her while pointing towards him.
Desse turned back and saw him, she saw him carrying some cartons with the help of two other guards.
'Good day ma'am" Stephen greeted her.
'Where have you been?" Desse, who was already angry with him, said in a very calm tone when she saw him carrying some cartons.
'Am sorry Ma, I didn't know you had been waiting for me. I checked the list of things that they supplied us and what we ordered. I noticed it did not tally what we ordered and it was not complete so I ran to meet them so they could give us our remaining items. I am really sorry Ma." Stephen said to Desse as he showed her the list that was in his hands.
'No no, you don't need to apologize, I came here and met your colleagues parking the items inside and I didn't see you. So I just thought you shyed away from your duty and left them to do it alone." Desse said to him in a very low tone.
'No Ma, you know I would never do such a thing. '
'Yes I know, that why I was very surprised because I had even asked you to check the items and make sure nothing is meeting."
'That's the least Ma," He said to her when he saw her going through it.
'Okay, so is this all of it?"
'Yes Ma, I already checked it and they are all complete."
'Alright, thank you. I think I would have to go with this now while I go inside and check on what the rest are doing."
'Okay Ma" Stephen replied to Desse as she left their midst.
Desse went inside to inspect them and make sure all of them that were assigned a particular duty to carry carried it out efficiently.
'Where is the new ladder we bought yesterday?" Desse asked one of the guards who was climbing up with a ladder that was already weak and almost broken.
'The people at the other side are using it Ma," the guards replied to her while pointing at the people that were using it.
Desse turned to see the people he was talking about and later turned back to them.
'You could have at least waited for them, when they are done using it they would give it to you to use ." Desse said to them in a low and calm tone.
'We only wanted to make it faster ma'am."
'And risk your life? Do you know that one wrong step from you and you are on the floor because this thing is not strong." Desse scolded him seriously.
'And you people are here passing him the rebons, don't you know if he falls all of you will be in trouble." Desse also scolded the guards with him.
'We are sorry Ma'am"
'You don't need to be sorry, I am only telling you because your life's on the line here."
'Thank you Ma I will get down now" the guard said as he came down from the broken ladder.
'You are welcome. Please do so and wait for them to finish using it so you can use it." Desse said to them and left them.
Desse kept on going from one place to the other checking on them and making sure they were doing the right thing. She was about to go outside to check on those outside when she ran into Christabel.
'Hi baby, what are you up to?" Desse asked Christabel, who was holding a bow in her hands.
'Good day ma'am Desse, I am trying to help with the little I can Ma," Christabel replied to her happily.
'Hmm鈥 my baby, what's to help us, so what exactly are you doing Ma." Desse asked her, teasingly.
'Well I am trying to cut this paper into pieces so that I can spray it later on."
'Do you mean the visitors? Like you would spray it on them just like we do watch on television? '
'Yes ma'am, exactly like that."
'Okay then, I think I would leave you to continue working so I don't disturb you but please be really careful with the scissor so it doesn't cut you." Desse said to her as she left her to carry on.
'Thanks Ma'am, I promise to be very careful when using it so it doesn't cut me." Christabel shouted so that Desse who was already far could hear her.
'Okay baby!" Desse replied, shouting so that Christabel could here her.
Desse kept walking round to make sure nobody was slacking behind.
