Chapter 18
The air was thick with tension as the warriors dragged Bavanda through the pack’s borders, her monstrous form still towering over them. Chains bound her wrists and ankles, silver-infused shackles burning into her skin. She barely flinched. The pain was nothing compared to the turmoil within her.
Her own pack had turned against her.
She had fought to survive. And in doing so, she had wounded her own people. The ones she had grown up with, laughed with, trained with. The moment her beast took over, they no longer saw her as Bavanda. They saw a threat.
Her father had been the first to give the order. “That’s not my daughter.” How could he deny her so easily?
Those words repeated in her mind as they shoved her through the iron gates of the dungeon beneath the packhouse. The cold, damp walls felt suffocating, the scent of decay and old blood filling her nostrils. The heavy door slammed shut behind her, and the room fell into silence.
Darkness surrounded her, but it was nothing compared to the void in her heart.
Above the dungeon, Avynna sat in Baron’s arms, her body wracked with silent sobs. The mighty Luna, who had once stood fearless against the darkest forces, was now broken.
“She’s our little girl,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I don’t understand, Baron. I don’t understand how we let this happen.”
Baron tightened his grip around her. He had no words. What could he say? His heart ached just as much as hers, but as Alpha, he had to be strong. Even when his entire being wanted to crumble.
Nancy stood nearby, her face grim. “This is beyond anything I’ve seen before,” she admitted. “Whatever that girl—Theresa—did to her, it awakened something dark inside Bavanda. They probably planted it inside her.”
Avynna looked up, desperation in her eyes. “There has to be a way to fix this. To bring her back. There… there has to be a way, right?.”
Nancy hesitated. “I… I don’t know if we can.”
Silence. A deafening silence that crushed every ounce of hope Avynna had left.
Bavanda remained curled in the farthest corner of the dungeon, knees pulled to her chest. Her claws dug into the stone floor as she stared at the chains binding her wrists. Even in her monstrous form, she felt small and weak.
Her mind replayed everything. Every moment, and every choice that led her here.
Theresa. The one person who had understood her. Had she truly abandoned her? Or was there another plan at play?
She couldn't have possibly left like that. Right?
She still cared like she said she did. Right?
Bavanda squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself not to break. She had never been afraid of the dark before, but now? Now, the shadows whispered, taunted her with visions of what she had become.
At that moment, she heard footsteps. Slow, and deliberate. She tensed, raising her head as the scent of something familiar filled the air.
He appeared before her almost immediately. Loco.
She growled, her beast still lurking beneath the surface. He stepped into view, calm as ever, but there was something different about him. He wasn’t smirking. He wasn’t taunting her.
“You look awful,” he said, his voice almost… gentle.
Bavanda glared at him. “Get out.”
He ignored her. Instead, he whispered something—a string of words in a language she didn’t recognize.
A sharp jolt shot through her body. The shadows around her swirled, dissipating like smoke. Pain burned through her veins, and then, like magic performed in broad daylight, she shifted back.
Bavanda gasped, looking down at her hands—her human hands. Her claws were gone. Her monstrous form had vanished. She was herself again.
She stumbled back. “What did you do?”
“I helped you,” Loco answered simply.
Bavanda’s breath came in short, ragged gasps. No one else had been able to control whatever was happening to her. Not her parents. Not the healers. But Loco had done it with nothing more than a few words.
Her suspicion flared. “Why? Why would you help me?”
Loco leaned against the stone wall, watching her carefully. “Because I know what they’re going to do to you,” he said. “You think they’ll keep you down here forever? No, Bavanda. They’re afraid of you. They’re going to decide you’re too dangerous to keep alive.”
She froze. “No… my parents wouldn’t—”
He cut her off with a chuckle, but there was no humor in it. “Your father already declared you weren’t his daughter. You think his warriors will hesitate when the time comes?”
A lump formed in her throat. She wanted to deny it. But deep down, a part of her knew he wasn’t entirely wrong.
Loco crouched in front of her, his piercing eyes locking onto hers. “Come with me,” he said. “I can help you. I can teach you to control this. To nurture the beast instead of letting it consume you.”
She stared at him, her heart pounding.
“Or,” he continued, “you can stay here. And wait for them to decide your fate.”
Silence stretched between them. Bavanda’s hands trembled.
Was this another trap? Another lie? Or was Loco really the only one who could help her now?
He extended his hand to her, waiting. She delayed, her mind racing with a thousand thoughts.
She couldn't trust him. Not after what he did. This was probably another mastermind plan she was walking into. She couldn't do this anymore, she was tired.
Where was Theresa? Why wasn't she here? She would have the answers Bavanda needed, she always did.
“And Theresa?" She asked. “I know you two have some sort of connection. I heard the subtle lines. Where is she, and why did she leave?"
Loco parted his lips to speak, but at that moment, loud footsteps thundered outside the dungeon doors. People were coming.
Loco turned to Bavanda, his arms stretched further. “The time is now, Bavanda. Decide. Are you coming with me or not?"
Bavanda felt her heart sink as her indecisiveness weighed heavily on her. Loco, however, was impatient. The footsteps were getting closer, they were closing in.
“Decide, Bavanda.”
