CHAPTER 39

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
Baron chivalrously scared all the men who flexed their sexy bodies at Avyanna away and he was only left with just her. She was so pissed because of the incident; her countenance was rumpled in a way that almost marred her beauty. Her beauty was almost lost in her very squeezed face but to Baron she was the fiercest looking, pretty girl in the hall. He almost seemingly pushed his lips into hers as a low growl escaped his parted lips.
Almost, until she asked angrily, "Can I ask you why you made all of them leave?" Avyanna pushed Baron away as she arranged her dress properly which was crumpled by Baron's firm grip on her.
"They shouldn't be talking to you." He breathed with a very growly voice.
"Why?" she crossed her arms and waited patiently for an answer. She couldn’t believe him. ‘First he was acting strange in the morning and now he wants to show protection. Pfft.’ She scoffed.
"Because you are my Guest here." He answered moving an inch away from her and straightening his posture.
"Is that how it is normally done? I am not allowed to speak to your people because I am your Guest." Avyanna spat.
"Avyanna, you do not understand me. I want you to calm down because I know you're pissed." He sounded like he was giving an order more than he was trying to calm her down.
"Why would I understand you? The last time we talked, we were addressing each other formally, Your Majesty." She said sarcastically. Avyanna didn't want to be the only getting annoyed about the situation as Baron was still calm, collected and composed regardless of her indignation.
"Avyanna it's a long story and you won't understand." He casted his gaze away from her.
"Alright then, at least allow me to enjoy my welcome party in peace without getting interrupted by you." She gestured to move away from him.
"Whatever that is happening between us doesn't change the fact that I really enjoyed myself with you last night." Baron said stiffly, yet there was a hint of honesty in his tone. He had been feeling guilty about the way he treated her that morning when she came to his office but he knew that he had to do what he did otherwise he wouldn't have been able to control himself from … taking over her lips the way he did the night before.
"I should have known, you're no different from my husband and other men who feel they can get what they want with their wealth and power." She wasn’t having it. Her emotions were almost laid bare on her face.
"Avyanna please don't talk like that." He grabbed her arm persuasively, but she pulled it away and shrugged away from him.
"Your Majesty, please tell me that what you said about your liking for me was all a lie?" At that point she was very skilled in holding back her emotions but for some reason, she was having difficulty hiding it before Baron. Even though it was hard, she still did it and even Baron did not sense any hint of emotional distress in her voice., but he could tell; he knew her so well even though they had only spent a little time together.
"Avyanna how can you say that? I really meant everything I said and I wasn't lying to you." Baron was aware that Avyanna was hurting inside, and he was aware that his actions caused the pain.
"Well, I guess fortunately for you I fell into your trap Your Highness." She let out a shrill a fake laugh.
"Please just call me Baron. There is no need to speak formally." He fumed subtly.
"I thought we are just allies and I came here for work. When I'm done with work, I will return back to my territory and you won't have to see me again. By then you will decide to choose another lady to satisfy your sexual urges, besides you can get as many ladies as it pleases you to sleep with. I was just one of them who fell for your bait." She finally took her first step to walk away but he called out, "Avyanna!" causing her to pause and look back at him.
"Your Majesty, it seems you do not like hearing the truth but I'm sorry to disappoint you, I am a Luna who speaks nothing but the truth." Avyanna placed her hands on her chest, bowing mockingly at Baron.
"Can we go to a safe place to have this conversation?" he asked, again like he was giving an order.
"You want me to leave my party? Well I am not that ungrateful and I just want to have peace during my stay here and I don't want any trouble." She crossed her arms and stood, waiting for an act or word from Baron that would make her finally leave.
Baron couldn’t help but admire her sassiness and the way she looked. The dress that clasped her body perfectly and revealed her beauty. How could he ever get angry staring at such a marvel. Her long gown covered her body but he could somehow make out the smooth legs that complemented her figure and made her look ravishing. He wished so much to hold her so despite his anger he could only raise his voice a decibel higher than a whisper. He not only admired her dress but also her body beneath it; her curves that seemed to turn necks, her plump oval breasts that the gown made to look more appealing and round. Her skin was smooth and he could perceive her. She smelled of peach, oranges, and absurdly lemon. To Baron, Avyanna was perfect.
Avyanna was the key to his heart. He wanted tell her the truth and explain everything to her but he was waiting for the right moment. Baron didn't just want Avyanna to know that he was her mate, he wanted her to feel it and long for him the same way he longed for her. He wanted to make sweet memories forever with her and he felt there was no need to rush things if it was going to be for a life time. He didn't like the idea of sharing his mate with someone else. Since Avyanna was married, he needed to wait patiently for the divorce to be done because when it is done, Avyanna will only remain his forever.
"Avyanna, you are unique and special and I know that you are going through a lot at the moment ranging from how your husband is treating you and trying to get your pack back, but please I want you to believe that I cannot lie to you and whatever I told you concerning how I feel about you is entirely true." Baron said, expressing a sorry attitude with an alpha-like toughness.
"So why did you give me such attitude this morning?" Avyanna asked.
"I didn't give you any attitude." Baron responded.
"That's how you treat all the ladies you go to bed with, they only matter to you during the night." She was more invested in the conversation because she really needed an answer from him.
"Avyanna please stop saying such things."
"I wonder why we are having this conversation because you still haven't said anything tangible." She wanted to walk away again.
He inhaled deeply, then he said, "I didn't want to speak to you earlier this morning because that was the only way I could control myself." Baron sighed. He knew that even though he wasn't ready to tell her the truth, he had to at least say something because Avyanna wasn't the type to give up easily.
"Why are controlling yourself?" she asked, finally sensing the genuineness and care in his voice, because he didn’t conceal it anymore.
"I don't want to hurt you more than Ericson did." He breathed.
"If you felt you weren't capable enough to take care of me, then you should not have confessed how you felt about me either. I would have been fine with us just becoming allies." She said calmly, and honestly.
"It's not that Avyanna." He bowed his head and shut his eyes as heaved a subtle sigh.
"Then what is it? Do you even care about the way I felt after everything we shared last night?" she asked, again needing a genuine answer.
"I totally understand and I am truly sorry. I … I meant every word that I said last night."
Steve understood through experience that it wasn't the appropriate time to tell the Lycan Alpha about the news but he had to inform Baron about it. He tried to mind link with Baron but Baron shut him out. The Lycan Alpha wasn't in the mood to entertain work as he was speaking with the Luna.
Steve had no other choice but to walk up to the position Avyanna and Baron stood. "Baron there is something important I need to inform you about."
"It can wait! I am in a middle of a conversation right now." Baron growled.
"It is really urgent." Steve argued.
"Why don't you just listen to what he has to say?" Avyanna tried to convince Baron. She was eager to know what it was all about, because Steve was so agitated than he normally was.
"Fine, speak up and make it quick." Baron ordered.
"Can we go somewhere private?" Steve suggested.
"Speak up! Isn't it just three of us here?" Baron asked. He wanted Avyanna to trust him for a while before he could tell her the truth and this was the kind of moment he felt he could earn her trust.
Steve must have done it on purpose or not, but there was an unsettling silence that engulfed the duo as they waited for Steve to speak up. Baron could sense there was something that was very wrong but he thought it best that Avyanna knew. She, on the other hand, expressed subtle eagerness to hear the news.
"Amanda is dead." Steve said silently with his head bowed.
Baron looked at his Beta with disbelief in his eyes, his eyes widening and intermittently switching colors from a deep molten yellow to his normal eyes. He could feel a swelling anger within him fluctuate and take place in his heart.
"Who is Amanda?" Avyanna asked Steve in bewilderment. She felt left out in the conversation, especially as she observed the look on Baron’s face.
"I don't think I am in the position to discuss that with you." Steve responded with a humble bow.
"Baron who is she?" Avyanna enquired again ignoring Steve's response. She stared at his discombobulated as he slowly raised it up. She could feel the anger within it emitted a powerful aura that made her instantly regret her question.
She didn’t need an answer anymore for the look on Baron's face spoke volumes.
