Lies He Told To Protect Her


Mary's POV


I laughed at what George had just spill out of his mouth, it was so unreasonable for him to starve himself just because I wasn't in the mood to cook

"I want to make some sausage and scrambled egg"

"Alright, I would be waiting" George said and stretched his hand towards his phone to get it "I need to make some calls"

"OK" Mary replied, walking to the kitchen

Life have never been easy for her, at first she could get anything she wanted but then things changed quickly for her dad

Her cooking was always fast and properly prepared, she was an exquisite cook

She brought the meal to the table, her husband was already out making a call

She neatly arranged the dishes, she then turned back to the kitchen, because she forgot the pen knife, on reaching the kitchen, she stumbled on a thick red rope lying helplessly on the floor

She lowered her back, thus brought back her childhood memory, one she wished it didn't

"How did you get here?" she spoke to the red rope as if it were human, she picked it up and looked at it deeper and very closely "Looks so much like it"

It happened a long time… A very long time, she was barely 15 years old


"Hurry"

"I can't walk faster than this mum, why are you in so much hurry?" Mary snared

"I left your sister alone with your dad and I need you to walk faster than that young lady" her mum said pointing to her

"Well next time don't leave her alone because I can walk home alone, I don't need you coming to pick me up" Mary said behind

Her mum gave her a long look, not saying a word then she turned and continued walking

Mary felt bad for what she said, but just like other regular days "It's not entirely my fault" she said at the top of her voice

Her excuses for her mistake, she never accepted that she was faulty, this made students in school feared her, she always stood out especially in showing strength

Mary increased her pace to meet up with her mum who had not said anything after that long pause, she was already far behind


When she succeeded in getting close, she asked "Why is dad like that?"

"He is just battling with his alcohol, he can be a mess when he is drunk and your younger sister is at home with him alone, I'm just a little worried about that"

"I hate him" Mary said with deep anger from her voice

"Don't baby girl, don't, he is putting some efforts to be a better father, to control his intake of alcohol, I don't want you to grow having hates for him" Mary's mum advised

"The door is open" Mary points to the door

They just reached their home, and to their shock, the door was open

"Why is the door open?" mum asked in total confusion, then she ran quickly into the house

"Ami" she screamed, she saw dad wiping away his life in a drunken state with his wine which was all over the floor. She looked around for Ami but she did not find her. She then turned to dad who was already partially conscious. "Where is she?"

"Who?" he laughed

"Let's go check mum" Mary held her mum hands to go away from him

"I told her not to leave her room" Mum kept saying

"Ami!!!" Mary called out

Mum was already getting worried, she couldn't find her anywhere and dad wasn't helping matters at all

After a long search in the house and still wasn't able to find her, they both came back to him

"Where is she?" mum screamed this time with tears rolling down her cheeks

"Who?" he asked that annoying question again

Mum got so upset, she picked one of his bottles he kept on the floor and scattered it on his head "Where is my baby you bastard?" she was willing to kill him right that moment

"Where's Ami please" Mary joined, she had cried tirelessly in her room before coming out

"Who? Ami?" he sat up straight "She… she wanted to swim at the pool backyard

Mum ran outside, straight to the pool, she was

" Ami" she kept shouting as she went close to the pool

She stopped at some point, saw traced of blood on the floor

"It's was probably dad's wine mum," Mary said

"You are a biology student, so you should hit it bad" Mary smiled

" Yes… who is?" Mary strained her eyes to see who was floating this late, she walked faster and this directed her to her attention wot her mum and when there

Mum ran really quick to see the person lying without fame, hope, practically, there was no sign of what is going to be what she thought initially

"Ami" mum said as she went closer to find to find out what had been happening

"Dad is not even bother, he would have some concern or sympathy and watch us before but he now owns his world, he doesn't care any more," mum was finally able to see if Ami was there

She was already floating, she was lying unconsciously with a red thick rope ties around her neck, drawn in the waters and this did not make sense at home


"Ami" mum screamed immediately she saw that Ami was the one already lying dead on the river "Ami" Mum placed her hands on her chest to perform some CPR, which she had never done before "Please Ami, don't do this to me" mum screamed for help "Call 911" she screamed to Mary


"What happened to her?How did you find her?" Mary just distracted for a moment when her mum had found her in the pool, "She killed herself" mum screamed

And still dad did not show concern by coming out at least to know why everyone was shouting and tubilating at the same time
