Chapter Thirty
Mar's Pov
I was finding it difficult to sleep. I tossed and turned. I was restless and I felt it was because of the way I had acted towards Arya earlier. She was hurt but tried to hide it.
The outburst I had was not necessary but that question she asked brought back memories of my beloved sister. My sister was taken away from me by the sirens.
The memory is still engraved in my mind. The sight of her butchered body and my mother's screams. A day of gloom in my household. No matter how hard I tried, I could never forget that fateful day.
Lourdes had been acting crazy for a while now. She was so different. I had tried my possible best to help her but it wasn't working. Gone was the focused fun and creative girl who loved to read books and go to school. Her head was filled with nothing but that strange man we hated. A few of the people who knew us whispered that he was a witch and he had taken over her mind like that of the other girls and he was the reason she was the way she was now. I refused to believe it. There was no such thing as witches. I never believed they existed. It was just a cock and bull story to me.
And if only I had paid attention maybe I could have saved her.
My friend, Caspian who was her boyfriend complained about her withdrawal to him before this began, but I had brushed it off because I felt it was just a mere lovers quarrel and they'd get back in no time. But it lingered.
Lourdes loved Caspian which I could attest to. I most times envied their relationship. But when it began she detested seeing him, but that didn't stop him from trying to help her.
He told me about the strange specie who could use their voice to make a person mad. The Sirens. He suspected that was what had affected her. The police were not helping. Nobody was helping except the organization Caspian worked for. They had promised to help me.
And on one faithful day, I got hope only for my mother to inform me about Lourdes's absence. We searched town looking for her but couldn't find her, we even informed the police of her disappearance and they promised to search for her and get back to us.
My mother took ill after my father had passed on me and my sister had been her life and she'd always say.
"You both are my life and I'll never survive it if anything happened to any of you"
I had to take care of her and at the same time look for my sister.
I was at home one evening when I got a call from the police to come over and identify a body only to get there and met a butchered body. It was beyond recognition but what made me know it was Lourdes was the bracelet I gave her on her birthday. She never took it off. It was still on her wrist. Lourdes was gone. And on hearing this news my mother passed.
I was alone because of those creatures. Now I'd be forced to take them down one after the other. It was my time to revenge on my sister's death. And I would not rest till I did that.
I stood up and left the room. If I took some more alcohol maybe sleep might just come. I went down to the bar and then I heard a noise coming from the kitchen.
"Who is there?" I asked but there was no response.
I went closer this time and asked again
"Who is there? Jade?" I called but there was no response and so I went to there to see if there was someone there.
I saw Arya there drinking a glass of water. I didn't say anything, I just watched her. She must have noticed she was not alone and turned to see who it was. She looked startled.
"Didn't mean to startle you" I said
"I shouldn't be here by this time. I just needed water"
"That is fine." And then there was an awkward silence. I had to say something because the silence was really getting awkward.
"I want to apologize for my outburst earlier. Didn't know what came over me"
"It's alright. I got you upset and so I deserved it"
"Don't act that way. I could tell you were hurt by the way you reacted"
"Because I was confused as to why you had reacted that way when I had just asked a mere question. But it's fine honestly"
"Thank you... let's have drinks then"
"I don't drink."
"Now I see you've not forgiven me. It's just one drink and I promise I won't bite you"
And then she laughed. She was so beautiful when she laughed.
"This is the first time I've seen you laugh and that's a nice one"
"You know you were rude to me the first time we spoke"
"I was? I'll make it up to you I promise"
Arya followed me to the living room and I got us glasses with a bottle of Ciroc. I poured in a little for her since she'd indirectly told me she was lightheaded.
We chatted for a while but then I had questions I wanted to ask her. Like how she'd gotten into that kind of mess with vale. I felt the need to protect her and if I had to do so then I needed to know what happened.
"What happened between you and Vale?"
"Vale saved me from an abusive boss who later fired me, he later helped me get a new job. I needed to make extra money so I could go back to school and he convinced me to take up singing at the pub so I could save up some money but I later realized he wanted to come to sing while he took almost all the money"
"You need to be careful because he is obsessed with you"
"Why do you say so?" She asked
"I noticed"
I didn't want to scare her with the details. I had run a check on him and I'd realized he had been following her for a long time without her knowing. He wanted to be the only one that could access her and now he couldn't he became violent. I'd try my best to protect her from him and I had no idea why they need to do so was strong.
We said good night to each other and she left.
