Chapter Forty Eight

Mar's Pov

Caspian and I rescheduled our meeting and we were supposed to meet up today. That had not changed yet.

Ever since I left the headquarters I had been in communication with Caspian, but it has always been done discreetly. If they found out I and Caspian were still friends they'd kill him. He was the only one close to family around now and I didn't want to lose him.

My phone buzzed, went over to pick it up. Just as I suspected it was Caspian.

"Hey man"

"We are still meeting today right?" I asked him

"Yeah.."
And that was all we said on phone. Each member of the headquarters had a tracker on their cell phone and so we didn't want any of our conversation to be recorded or for him to be traced and found with me. So Caspian got a special number with which he communicates with just me and tries to keep he tracked phone at bay when he wants to see me.

I got dressed and drove out of the house. Aliya was still asleep when I left the house, I didn't want to wake her up. But I had given special orders to the cook to prepare something good for her to eat when she woke up.

Caspian and I had a private spot where we met up to talk. I got there a little early and sat down to wait for him. I waited for almost an hour and 45 minutes and yet no trace of him. I became worried.

"Did they find out that he was coming to meet up with me?"

"What was the next step I was to take?" I kept asking myself questions then I saw him walk inside.

Caspian looked really pale worse than the last time I saw him. Was he trying to keep fit?

"What kept you waiting man? You got me worried"

And he laughed, I'm not a child or woman you should worry about. I'm fine.

"It's not funny. What kept you from telling me for this long? I was beginning to think you had gotten into trouble"


"No one can catch me, man. I'm flash remember"

And then we both laughed at that. Caspian always referred to himself as flash because of his mastery. He was never caught for anything and that's why he holds a high position at the headquarters.

"Will you now tell me what kept you waiting"

He flinched a bit and then finally spoke up.

"I had an early doctor's appointment"

I was shocked to hear that. I had never heard him speak of the hospital. And for him to do that now, then it was serious.

"Doctors appointment?" I asked curiously

"Yes... have some difficulties with the drugs given to me"

"What drugs man?"

"I have cancer"


And it felt like a heavy bomb was thrown my way.
I had noticed his constant weight loss but I never thought it was something so serious as this. I felt terrible knowing that I overlooked him. My sister would be so angry with me wherever she was.

"When did you find out?" I asked him

"Two years ago"

"Two years ago!! .. when did you plan to tell me? Or where are you planning on hiding it from me?"

"I was going to do so but there really wasn't any opportunity to do so"

"How far is it"

"End-stage"


"What? End-stage. Where are you planning to tell me when you were six feet beneath the ground?"

"I didn't want you to do this... what you are doing right now and that's why I didn't mention it."


"But don't be frightened. I'm still active. My doctor has recommended chemotherapy sessions for me and that's what I went to see him for"

"It's really this bad...."

"This is not the reason I called you here. You need to be extremely careful. Logan had got a mole on your group giving him feedback on everything you do"

"That's impossible man... all my people are loyal"

"The headquarters know of a rare breed siren you are keeping and you know the worth of such creature. Logan is ready to kill you to have it"

"A siren??"

"I have no siren at the warehouse. I haven't gotten any of late not to think of the rare species"

"If I didn't know you well enough, I would have said you are a liar."

"I am serious about not having a siren in my custody. I haven't hunted in a while. Jade does most of the hunting. I have abandoned my ring for a while now"


"Is it because of her?"

"Who are you talking about?" O asked looking confused

"Your woman. I'm not the only one keeping secrets. When did you plan to tell me about her?"

"How did you get to know about her?"

"That is why you need to be careful. Someone close to you is providing information to the headquarters and that's how I found out about your woman and how Logan was able to double-cross you the day we were supposed to meet up."

"I'm sure the individual doesn't know who you were going to see that day, if not I would have been gone by now."


"It's dangerous for us to keep seeing. I'll figure out another means of our meeting but for now, I need you to take good care of yourself man. I don't need you to do anything else. I'll fight Logan myself."

"Tell me about her. You finally fell in love"

"She's different and special. I just need to protect her"

"Then do that. Find the mole and you know what to do"

"And take your medications man. Summon me if you need me"

"I am alive. Stop acting like I'm about to die"

"I know you are not but you and I know what Lourdes would have done if she were to be living"

"I know and I yearn for her so much. I think about her most times still"


Caspian and my sister were a true match before those bloody sirens cut it short. And they were all going to pay.
