Chapter Fifty Eight

Yara's Pov

The past few days had been difficult for me. I felt like I was choking and no one could see me choke. I stayed indoors, and barely ate anything and my parent's worry was not hidden.

Isla had come severally to see me but had been dismissed. She too was worried. I felt guilty for making them worry about me this much. But my parents are to be blamed.

They didn't care about my feelings. And everyone says I do not have a choice since I was betrothed to that monster at birth.

"Why could he not just take another bride?"

I was very sure they were other sirens who wanted him. Some didn't hide their distaste for me.        hated me because she felt she was a better match for the king.

Isla had continuously told me how envious other families were to mine. And from all this, it was really hard for me to do otherwise.

My dreams of living in the sea were never coming to pass and so I had to come to terms with it and face my reality.

My reality had Maithusa in it and no matter how much I wished I could never change it.

And knowing who Maithusa was, he'd do anything for me to give in to his request. I didn't want my parents to suffer because of my choices and so I had to do what they wanted.

"Yara, your father and I are worried sick about you." My mama said

"I am fine. I just need some time alone"

"You have been starving yourself and that bothers me even more"

"I am fine mama"

"You don't look like you are Yara. Your father and I mean the best for you. We do not want you to suffer but have the best of lives"

"I appreciate your efforts and I promise you that I'm fine"

The look on her face showed she didn't believe me but she left. I laid back and kept on thinking about what my life would be if I stayed with maithusa.

As my thoughts ran so did the day become night. It was late at night when I heard a very loud sound just like it had sounded in my dream.

"Did a ship crash?" I asked myself

And then I came out. The sound shook the water and I was sure that every home felt that. I came out to see other sirens outside. They were all around in pairs, discussing what had actually happened.

"Isla!!!" She came to my mind. I hope she was safe. I left the tent to find Isla.

"Isla... Isla" I called but there was no response.

"Where could she have gone to?"

"Isla..." I was becoming sacred. I hoped she was not in any sort of harm.
And then she came out from her tenth.

"You have been in there, you got me so worried"

"How do you expect me to just respond to you after you've ignored me for a long time now"

"I am sorry for keeping away for that long... I just wanted to clear my head"

I pulled her for a hug and she hugged me back then we hit our tails together and laughed.

"Did you hear that?"

"What are you talking about?" Isla asked looking confused.

"The sound that shook Aidon..."

"Yes I did... it could be an eruption and I'm glad it didn't affect us"

"Yeah I'm glad too but what if it is not an eruption"

"I don't know what else it could be Yara. I do not know what is going through your mind."

"Let us go over and see what it is," I said

And Isla shook her head in disagreement.

"I'm not going Yara. It is dangerous to try to do so"

"We don't even know what it is"

"That's the more reason we should not attempt going close"

"I promise we won't go so close to whatever it is. We would just take a peep at it and come home"

"Just a peep?" Isla asked

"Yeah, Isla just a peep" and she agreed.

"What direction is it?"

"Let's take this route"

We took the left route and I was sure that was where I think the sound came from.
I knew it was not an eruption, I knew there was something there for me to discover.

And when we got there, it was not an eruption. A ship had crashed right below the sea.

"I knew it... my dream showed me this"

"Your dream?.. let's go Yara being here is dangerous" Isla insisted

I wanted to go close to see if there were any full folks but Isla stopped me.

"You promised Yara"

"I promised what?"

"Not to go close"

"That was because I thought it was an eruption"

"It is not different. It is still very dangerous and remembers you always told me that a promise is a promise"

"Okay okay.. I've heard you I won't go close"

"Now let's leave this place"

"What if a fell folk needs our help"

"You can't help it.. so let's go" she insisted

"Why are you always so scared?" I asked her

I always saw Isla as a strong woman. She had come to survive after her parents died all by herself. She had fended for herself alone. I was the only family she had known. And so it felt weird when she acted this way.

"Okay let's look around to see if there's anything hog we can pick up from the ship"

"That's even worse Yara. It is stealing. I can't let you do that. I'm not going close to that ship for anything and that final. Let us go"

"Alright then let us go to the shore we haven't been there in days"

"I do not think going to the shore is a good idea now, especially after this crash. I'm sure the full folks will be all around and they might see us"

"If the full folks will be closer then that is a good idea to see them really close"

"Are you listening to me at all?.  It is dangerous let us go. It is safer to be home at this point. Isla said and then I followed her home.

I was so restless. I wanted to know if there were full folks on the ship. I wanted to see them up close. I had only seen them from a distance. Isla was preventing me from doing so and I was definitely going to return with it without her. She was too fearful for my liking.

"I heard some people speaking  about an engagement ceremony between the king and his supposed bride.. you"

"I haven't heard of any ceremonies"

"And that's because you shut the other out. How were you supposed to hear about it?"

"True.... maybe he got himself a new bride because I haven't heard and I'll be glad"

"I made it clear to him the last time that I'd never be his bride"

"And you think he will let that happen"

"I do not care... I hate him so much"

"I don't like him either but he treats you differently"

"I don't want that... I want a good husband and one who is kind and if possible a full folk"

"You know that is impossible"

"I'll make it possible and I'll show you"

"If you ask me I think your parents are organizing something without informing you"

My father had tried to convince me to marry the king but I had continuously told him I was not interested.

"He would seek my permission first before planning anything"

"Maybe the king has found a new bride. And I wish him and his bride well"

Isla was right, even though I had thought things through my heart and had never accepted maithusa, I felt I and my parents could reach a conclusion and I'll be happy as well as the both of them, but my father's insistence was really something I had to look at into.

"I'll see you later... I need to go home"

I went home to meet my parents in the company of Maithusa. He was leaving already. I didn't speak to him, just passed him and went to meet my mama and papa.

"What is he doing here?" I asked

"He came to inform us about your engagement ceremony... and you need to get prepared because it is by the corner"

"Papa, why are you doing this?"

"As far as I am concerned. I am doing the right thing. And that is what is best for you"

"And one more thing. I think it's best for you to spend some time with him and get to know him" and then he walked away.

My heart was broken into a million pieces.

"How could you both have done this to me?" I asked my mother who came to my side.

"Your father would not listen to what I told him but I think you should do as he said"

"I do not live maithusa mama."

"You will learn to love him"

I pulled away from my mother and went into my tenth. They had both hurt me deeply.
